「契約の箱」という言葉を聞いたことがあるでしょうか。もしかしたら、映画『レイダース』に登場する箱を思い浮かべる人もいるかもしれません。しかし、聖書に登場する契約の箱は、単なる伝説や映画の小道具ではありません。古代イスラエルの信仰の中心にあり、神の臨在を象徴する大切な聖なる箱だったのです。この箱には、モーセに与えられた十戒の石板が納められていました。つまり、「契約の箱」は神とイスラエルの契約の証そのものでした。
1．本章の全体構成と特徴
まず最初に、本章（1歴代誌13章）の構成を確認しましょう。この章は、ダビデ王が契約の箱をエルサレムに運ぼうとする場面を描いています。主な内容は、次の3つに分かれます。
ダビデの提案と民の同意（1～4節）。ここでは「全イスラエル」が強調され、みんなで礼拝を再建しようという思いが語られています。
続いて神の箱の移動の開始（5～8節）。盛大な行進と賛美が行われますが、その熱心さの裏で見落とされていた重要なことがありました。
最後にウザの死とオベデ・エドムの祝福（9～14節）。予想もしなかった悲劇と、意外な祝福。この対比が、深い霊的な意味を語っています。
2．なぜ歴代誌はこの箱を取り上げるのか？
では、この章の重要なポイントを見てまいりましょう。まず、この契約の箱がなぜ歴代誌で取り上げられるのかを考えてみましょう。著者は、ダビデ王が箱をエルサレムに運ぶ場面を、13章で取り上げていますが、サムエル記の記事の順序を変えています。2サムエル記（5～6章）では、まず戦争に勝った後に箱を運びます。一方、歴代誌では箱の移動を先に描いています。時系列としてはサムエル記の方が順序通りですが、なぜ歴代誌は順番を変えたのでしょうか。
その理由は、「神を求めることこそが勝利の鍵である」という、霊的な大切な原則を伝えるためです。歴代誌は、単なる歴史の記録ではありません。バビロン捕囚から帰ってきた人々に、「礼拝の再建と神との契約の確認が何よりも大事だ」と教えているのです。
3．熱心さだけでは足りない――ウザの死が語るもの
次は、契約の箱がエルサレムの西、約13キロ離れたキルヤテ・エアリムに放置されていたところから運ばれる場面に注目します。箱を運ぶ行列は、音楽と賛美で大いに盛り上がっていました。しかし、途中で悲劇が起こります。牛が足を滑らせ、箱が揺れた時、ウザという人物が思わず手を伸ばして箱を支えます。人間から見ると「当然の行動」に思えますが、神は彼を打たれました。なぜこのようなことが起きたのでしょうか。
それは、彼らが神の定めた方法に従わなかったからです。ダビデ自身も、後になって「私たちは主を求めなかった」（15:13）と反省しています。つまり、熱心さや形式ではなく、神が定めたとおりにことを行うことが求められていたのです。神の道は人の道とは違うものです。神の臨在を求める礼拝は、人間の判断や善意だけで進めてよいものではありません（みんなの聖書学舎学院長ブログも参照してください）。
4．祝福はイスラエルだけのものではない
ウザの死を恐れたダビデは、契約の箱をオベデ・エドムの家に一時置きます。オベデ・エドムはガテ人であり、イスラエル人ではない、つまり異邦人です。ところが、その家に神の祝福が訪れました。これはとても驚くべきことです。神は、イスラエルだけでなく、異邦人にも恵みを与えられる方なのです。神の臨在、とくに礼拝がもたらす祝福は、国や民族を超えてすべての人に開かれている――歴代誌はそのことを静かに教えています。
5．現代への問いかけ――あなたの礼拝はどうですか？
この物語は、今の私たちにも問いかけています。「あなたの礼拝は、神の定めた方法に従っていますか？ それとも、自分の思い込みや都合に頼ってはいませんか？」
礼拝は、ただの熱心さや感情の高揚によるものではなく、神の言葉を大事にして従う態度に根ざすものです。今一度、自分の礼拝を振り返ってみませんか。「神の御心に従う礼拝」こそが、本当の祝福への道なのです。あなたが神の定めを大事にし、一歩踏み出したとき、その場に神の臨在と祝福が訪れることでしょう。それでは、また明日。
Season 6: Easy Explanation of 1 Chronicles 13 – The Ark of the Covenant
Have you ever heard the phrase “Ark of the Covenant”? Maybe you think of the box in the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark. But the Ark in the Bible is not a legend or a movie prop. It was at the center of Israel’s faith and showed God’s presence. Inside were the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments given to Moses. So, the Ark was the sign of God’s covenant with Israel.
1. The Structure and Features of This Chapter
First, let’s look at the structure of 1 Chronicles 13. This chapter tells how King David tried to bring the Ark to Jerusalem. It has three parts:
- David’s plan and the people’s agreement (verses 1–4): Here, “all Israel” is mentioned, showing that worship was a community act.
- The start of moving the Ark (verses 5–8): There was a big parade with music and praise. But something important was missed.
- The death of Uzzah and the blessing of Obed-Edom (verses 9–14): A sad event and an unexpected blessing. This contrast teaches a deep spiritual truth.
2. Why Does Chronicles Talk About the Ark?
Why does the writer of Chronicles focus on the Ark? At that time, the Ark was already lost. But the writer wanted to show its importance. He even changed the order of events compared to Samuel. In 2 Samuel (chapters 5–6), first there is victory in war, then the Ark is moved. In Chronicles, the Ark comes first. Why?
Because the writer wants to teach this: “Seeking God is the key to victory.” Chronicles is not just history. It speaks to people who returned from exile: “Rebuild worship and confirm your covenant with God first.”
3. Zeal Is Not Enough – What Uzzah’s Death Teaches Us
Next, look at the sad event. The Ark was left in Kiriath-Jearim, about 13 km west of Jerusalem. David and the people made a joyful parade with music. But then tragedy happened. The oxen slipped, and the Ark shook. Uzzah reached out to steady it. From a human view, this seems natural. But God struck him down. Why?
This happened because they did not follow the way God had set. Even David later reflected, “We did not seek the Lord” (15:13). In other words, what was required was not just enthusiasm or outward form, but doing things exactly as God had commanded. God’s ways are different from human ways. 4. Blessing Is Not Only for Israel
David was afraid after Uzzah died. He left the Ark at the house of Obed-Edom. Obed-Edom was a Gittite, not an Israelite – an outsider. But God blessed his house! This shows that God’s blessing is not only for Israel. Worship and God’s presence bring blessing to all nations. Chronicles quietly teaches this truth.
