1．天と地の神を信じたラハブ（2:1–11）
イスラエルの人々は、神さまから「この土地をあなたがたに与える」と約束されて、カナンの地に入ろうとしていました。最初に通らなければならない町は「エリコ」でした。
リーダーのヨシュアは、町の様子を調べるために2人の偵察を送り出します。しかし、すぐに敵に見つかってしまい、2人は追われることになります。
そのとき、エリコに住むラハブという女性が、2人のイスラエル人をかくまい、助けてくれました。なぜラハブは彼らを助けたのでしょうか。
ラハブはこう言いました。「あなたがたの神は、天の神、地の神です」（ヨシュア記2:11）。彼女は、紅海が分かれた出来事や、イスラエルの神が敵を打ち破った話を聞いていました。そして、「この神こそ本当の神にちがいない」と思ったのです。
ラハブはイスラエルの民ではありませんでしたが、まことの神さまを知り、信じるようになりました。ラハブの信仰は、かつてのアブラハムの信仰と同じです（創世記24:3）。聖書には「誰も聖霊によらなければ『イエスは主』と言うことはできない」（1コリント12:3）と書かれています。ラハブも神さまの働きによって信仰を持ち、2人を助けたのです。
2．赤い紐（ひも）は、神さまの守りのしるし（2:12–21）
ラハブは、かくまったお礼として「私と家族を助けてください」と頼みました。イスラエルの偵察たちは、「あなたの家の窓に赤い紐を結びなさい。それがあなたたちの安全のしるしになります」と答えます。
この「赤い紐」には特別な意味があります。みなさんは出エジプトの話を知っていますか？そのときも、イスラエルの人々は神さまの命令で家の入口に羊の血を塗り、そのしるしによって災いから守られました（出エジプト記12章）。
赤いしるしは、神さまの守りのサインなのです。そして、これは私たちにとって「イエス・キリストの十字架の血」を表しています。新約聖書には「血を流すことなしには、赦（ゆる）しはありません」（ヘブル9:22）と書かれています。つまり、「イエスさまの十字架によるゆるし」が、私たちにとっての赤い紐なのです。
3．信じた者に与えられる救い（2:21）
ラハブは「おことばどおりにいたしましょう」（2:21）と言いました。これは、「私は神さまのことばを信じて従います」という意味です。たとえ自分が遊女（ゆうじょ）であり、イスラエル人でなくても、神さまの愛と救いは誰にでも開かれていると、ラハブは信じました。
聖書には「神はユダヤ人だけでなく、異邦人（すべての人）の神でもあります」（ローマ3:29）と書かれています。あなたがどこで生まれたとしても、過去にどんなことがあったとしても、神さまはあなたを愛し、守り、導こうとしておられます。
4．今日のわたしたちへのメッセージ
この話は、昔のラハブの物語だけではありません。今を生きる私たちにも大切なことを教えてくれます。神さまは天と地のすべてを支配している方です（2:1–11）。また、守りのしるし＝救いのしるしを与えてくださいます（2:12–21）。神さまのことばを信じるとき、救いと祝福が与えられるのです（2:21）。
私たちも心の「窓」に、イエスさまの十字架の愛をしっかりと結びつけましょう。それが、神さまの守りの中で生きる秘けつです。あなたの人生にも、神さまの守りと導きがありますように。また次回、お会いしましょう。
Joshua Chapter 2
The Red Cord: God’s Promise of Protection
1. Rahab Believed in the God of Heaven and Earth (2:1–11)
The people of Israel were near the land that God had promised to them. To enter the land, they first had to go through a city called Jericho.
Their leader, Joshua, sent two men to look at the city quietly. But the king of Jericho soon found out and tried to catch them.
At that time, a woman named Rahab, who lived in Jericho, hid the two men in her home. She helped them escape.
Why did Rahab help them?
Because she believed in the God of Israel. She said:
“The Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” (Joshua 2:11)
Rahab had heard stories about God. She knew about the Red Sea, how it opened for the people to cross, and how God had defeated powerful enemies.
Even though Rahab was not part of Israel, she began to believe in the one true God. This kind of faith is like the faith of Abraham (see Genesis 24:3). The Bible says:
“No one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ without the Holy Spirit.” (1 Corinthians 12:3)
God was already working in Rahab’s heart, helping her believe and act with faith.
2. The Red Cord Is a Sign of God’s Protection (2:12–21)
Rahab asked the men, “Please promise to save me and my family.”
They answered, “Tie a red cord to your window. This will be the sign that your house is protected.”
This red cord has a special meaning.
In the story of the Exodus, God told the people of Israel to put lamb’s blood on their doors. This was a sign for God to pass over their homes and protect them from harm (see Exodus 12).
In the same way, the red cord was a sign of protection from God.
For us today, this red cord points to the blood of Jesus Christ. The New Testament says:
“Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.” (Hebrews 9:22)
That means Jesus gave His life for us. His death on the cross is our “red cord”—a sign of forgiveness and salvation.
3. Salvation Is Given to Those Who Believe (2:21)
Rahab said, “I will do as you have said.” (Joshua 2:21)
She believed in God’s promise. Even though she was not from Israel, and even though she was known as a sinner, she trusted that God’s love and salvation are for all people.
The Bible says:
“God is not only the God of the Jews, but also the God of everyone.” (Romans 3:29)
No matter where you are from or what you have done in the past—God loves you, wants to protect you, and wants to lead your life.
4. A Message for Today
This is not just an old story. It teaches us something for our lives today:
God is the Lord of heaven and earth (2:1–11).
God gives signs of salvation and protection (2:12–21).
When we believe in God’s Word, we receive blessing and salvation (2:21).
Just like Rahab tied the red cord in her window, let’s tie the love of Jesus to the window of our hearts. That is how we live in God’s protection and care.
