1．答えが欲しい夜に
私たちは、つらい出来事に出会うと、まず理由を知りたくなります。病気、事故、仕事の失敗——「なぜ自分が？」。理由が分かれば、納得できる。納得できれば、前に進める。多くの人が、そう考えます。
ヨブ記38章でヨブも同じことを求めました。「私は理由を知りたい。神よ、説明してほしい」。ところが神は、理由を説明しません。代わりに、次々と「問い」を投げかけます。ここで考えたいのは、なぜ神は答えず、問い続けたのかという点です。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
ヨブ記は大きく分けて、前半が議論、後半が神の語りです。友人たちは、「正しく生きれば報われる」「苦しみは罰だ」という分かりやすい理屈を繰り返しました。しかし、それではヨブの苦しみは説明できません。38章は、その議論が終わり、神ご自身が初めて口を開く場面です。
つまりここは、話題が変わる「転換点」。人間同士の議論から、神の視点へと切り替わる章なのです。
３．本章の構造
38:1–3「嵐の中の呼びかけ」神は「嵐の中から」語ります。これは怒りよりも、圧倒的な存在感を示すための表現です。「腰に帯を締めよ」とは、「しっかり聞きなさい」という合図です。
38:4–11「創造の現場にいたのか」「わたしが地の基を据えたとき、あなたはどこにいたのか」。世界は、人間がいなくても成立していました。海でさえ、初めから制御され、秩序づけられていたと語られます。
38:12–21「光と闇を命じたことがあるか」朝、光、闇、死の領域へ話が及びます。毎日起きる出来事でも、人は仕組みの全体を知ってはいません。それをわきまえよ、と問いが重なります。ヨブの「わかったような顔」が崩されていきます。
38:22–30「人のいない荒れ地にも降る雨」雨や雪の話になります。注目点は、雨が「人のいない荒れ地」にも降るという指摘です。自然は人間中心にできてはいません。しかし、無秩序でもありません。
38:31–38「天体を結ぶのは誰か」星の運行や天の法則は、人が支配できるものではありません。世界を最終的に動かしているのは誰か、という問いに行き着きます。
4．読みの変遷
この章は長く、「人は無知だから黙るべきだ」という教訓として読まれてきました。特に問いの厳しさが強調され、ヨブを打ち負かす場面のように語られることが多かったのです。短い引用に向いていたため、全体の流れよりも部分が独立して用いられました。
5．本来の文脈
しかし文脈全体を見ると、中心は「叱責」ではありません。神がしているのは、ヨブを小さくすることではなく、視野を広げることです。「あなたの問いは間違っていない。ただ、その問いを置く場所が、世界全体の中ではここだ」と示しているのです。重心は、「世界は説明しきれるものではないが、秩序のもとにある」という点にあります。
6．私たちへのメッセージ
現代的に読むと、38章はこう語っています。「すべての苦しみには説明がある、と思いすぎていないか」。説明できないことがある。しかし、それで世界が意味を失うわけではない。信仰があるかどうかに関わらず、「分からないまま生きる」という感覚には、多くの人が共感できます。
神の問いは、答えの代用品ではなく、世界とヨブの距離感を取り戻すための装置でした。神は、私たちにも問いかけます。
7．まとめ
神は理由を説明しませんでした。しかし、沈黙も続けませんでした。嵐の中から語りかけ、「あなたは一人で世界を背負ってはいない」と示します。
最初の問いに戻りましょう。なぜ神は「答え」ではなく「問い」を語ったのか。それは、答えよりも先に、立ち位置を変える必要があったからです。あなたも窓を開けて、空を見上げてみてください。神の問いかけが、あなたの立ち位置を変えて、あなたの悩みを違う角度から見させてくれるでしょう。
ヨブ記38章は、苦しみを消す章ではありません。苦しみの中で、世界をもう一度広く見るための章なのです。次の39章では、その視線が、私たちの足元——生き物たちへと向かっていきます。ではまた明日の続きをお楽しみに。
[Season 6] Job Chapter 38 Explained Simply
1. A Night When We Want an Answer
When we face painful events, we want reasons.
Illness, accidents, failure at work—“Why me?”
If we know the reason, we think we can accept it.
If we can accept it, we believe we can move forward.
In Job chapter 38, Job wants the same thing.
“I want to know the reason. God, please explain.”
But God does not explain the reason.
Instead, God asks many questions.
So we need to think about this point.
Why does God speak with questions instead of answers?
2. Historical and Literary Context
The Book of Job is divided into two main parts.
The first half is discussion.
The second half is God’s speech.
Job’s friends repeat simple ideas:
“If you live right, you will be rewarded.”
“Suffering is punishment.”
But these ideas cannot explain Job’s pain.
Chapter 38 is the moment when God speaks for the first time.
This is a clear turning point.
The story moves from human discussion
to God’s point of view.
3. Structure of the Chapter
38:1–3 The Call from the Storm
God speaks “from the storm.”
This shows strong presence, not only anger.
“Prepare yourself” means, “Listen carefully.”
38:4–11 Were You There at Creation?
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?”
The world existed without humans.
Even the sea was controlled and ordered from the beginning.
38:12–21 Have You Commanded the Morning?
God speaks about morning, light, darkness, and death.
People see these things every day,
but they do not know the whole system.
Job’s confidence is slowly broken.
38:22–30 Rain for Empty Land
God talks about rain and snow.
Rain also falls on empty land where no people live.
Nature is not centered on humans,
but it is not without order.
38:31–38 Who Controls the Heavens?
Humans cannot control stars or sky laws.
The final question is clear:
Who truly governs the world?
4. How This Chapter Has Been Read
For a long time, this chapter was read as a lesson:
“Humans are ignorant, so they should be silent.”
The strong questions were emphasized.
Job was seen as being defeated.
Short verses were often quoted alone,
and the full flow of the chapter was lost.
5. The Original Context
When we read the whole chapter,
the center is not blame or punishment.
God is not making Job small.
God is expanding Job’s view.
God is saying,
“Your question is not wrong.
But its place in the whole world is here.”
The main point is this:
The world cannot be fully explained,
but it is held by order.
6. Message for Us Today
Chapter 38 challenges us today.
“Do you think every pain must have an explanation?”
Some things cannot be explained.
But that does not mean life loses meaning.
Believers and non-believers can share this feeling:
Living without full understanding.
God’s questions are not fake answers.
They help restore the right distance
between Job and the world.
God is also asking us.
7. Conclusion
God did not explain the reason.
But God did not stay silent.
From the storm, God spoke and showed this:
“You are not carrying the whole world alone.”
Let us return to the main question.
Why did God speak with questions instead of answers?
Because before answers,
our position needed to change.
Open a window and look at the sky.
God’s questions may change your position
and help you see your trouble differently.
Job chapter 38 does not erase suffering.
It helps us see the world more widely while suffering.
