1．管理できないものに囲まれて生きる私たち
私たちの生活は「管理できること」や「役に立つこと」を基準に成り立っています。たとえば、効率よく働く家電や、時間通りに動く電車、数字で評価される仕事の成果などが挙げられます。一方で、思い通りにいかないものや、効率が悪いものは、しばしば邪魔者のように扱われてしまいます。
ところで、自然界に目を向けるとどうでしょうか。荒野で生きる野生動物たちは、人間の計画や都合とは無関係に、自由に生きています。ヨブ記39章で神が示しているのは、人の管理を超えた世界の存在です。そこには、「役に立つかどうか」では測れない独自の秩序があるのではないか。この問いが、章全体を貫いています。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
ヨブ記39章は、38章から始まる「主の語り（38:1–40:2）」の中心にあたります。38章では宇宙や気象など、無生物の世界がテーマでしたが、39章の主題は動物、特に家畜ではなく野生動物です。古代近東の社会においても、これらの野生動物は人の支配が及ばない存在でした。神は被造物の秩序を、人間中心ではない視点から示そうとしているのです。
3．本章の流れ
39:1–4「誕生の時を人は知らない」野やぎや雌鹿が人の手助けなく子を産み、子は自力で成長していく姿が描かれます。命の始まりや成長は人の管理外で進んでいきます。
39:5–8「自由に生きる存在」野ろばが荒野を住処とし、人の声や都合に縛られない姿が語られます。この自由も偶然ではなく、神が与えたものだとされています。
39:9–12「力はあるが従わない存在」野牛の力強さが強調されつつも、人がそれを意のままに使うことはできません。人間の労働や計画には組み込めない存在も、神の秩序の一部に含まれています。
39:13–18「不釣り合いに見える存在」例えば人間の賢さに比べ愚かに見える駝鳥は、驚異的な足の速さをもっています。神の創った世界は、人間が期待する「バランスのよい秩序」だけでできているわけではなく、人間の理解を超えた秩序を示しています。
39:19–30「本能は誰が与えたのか」馬の勇敢さや、鷲の鋭い視力、高く舞い上がる力が取り上げられます。これらはいずれも人が作り出したものではありません。この章は最終的に、「それぞれの動物が人に従わない仕方で秩序づけられている」という理解へと読者を導きます
4．本章の読み方
これまで、この章は神の全能と人間の無知を対比し、「だから人は神に逆らうべきではなく、従うべきだ」とする教訓の文脈で読まれてきました。
しかし文脈を意識すると、この章も本来は、ヨブの苦しみの意味を問いかける神の言葉の一部と考えるのが自然でしょう。苦しみの理由については説明されていませんが、神はヨブに世界の見方自体を広げてほしいと願っているように思われます。
5．現代の私たちに対する適用
以上の意味で、ここで私たちが受け取るべきメッセージは、「たとえ役に立たないように見えるものであっても、すべては神の定めと秩序の中に位置づけられており、神にとって大切なものなのだ」ということです。つまりこの世界は神の管理と知恵のもとにあるのです。
しかし現実の私たちは、人間が中心であるかのように考え、人間にとって役に立つかどうかという基準で、神の創られた世界の秩序を破壊してしまいがちです。
ヨブ記39章は、「人間の管理を超えて存在しているものにも、確かな意味がある」という新たな世界観を投げかけています。すぐに理解したり、説明したりできなくても、世界は神の知恵の中で保たれている。この章は、そんな見方を静かに私たちの前に差し出しています。では、また明日の続きをお楽しみにしてください。

Are “Useless Things” Really Meaningless?
- Living Surrounded by Things We Cannot Control
Our lives are built on what we can manage and what is useful. For example, we depend on home appliances that work efficiently, trains that run on time, and work results that are evaluated by numbers. On the other hand, things that do not go as planned or seem inefficient are often treated like obstacles.
But what happens when we turn our eyes to the natural world? Wild animals living in deserts and open fields live freely, without any concern for human plans or convenience. In Job chapter 39, God points to the existence of a world that goes beyond human control. There seems to be an order that cannot be measured by whether something is useful or not. This question runs through the whole chapter.
- Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter
Job chapter 39 stands at the center of “the speeches of the Lord” that begin in chapter 38 (38:1–40:2). While chapter 38 focuses on the non-living world such as the universe and weather, the main theme of chapter 39 is animals, especially wild animals rather than domestic ones. In the societies of the ancient Near East, these wild animals were also beings that humans could not control. God is trying to show the order of creation from a perspective that is not centered on humans.
- Flow of the Chapter
39:1–4 “Humans Do Not Know the Time of Birth”
Wild goats and deer give birth without human help, and their young grow up on their own. The beginning and growth of life move forward outside human control.
39:5–8 “Beings That Live in Freedom”
The wild donkey lives in the wilderness and is not bound by human voices or convenience. This freedom is not accidental but is given by God.
39:9–12 “Powerful but Unsubmitting Beings”
The strength of the wild ox is emphasized, but humans cannot use it as they wish. Even beings that cannot be included in human labor or plans are part of God’s order.
39:13–18 “Beings That Seem Out of Balance”
The ostrich, which may look foolish compared to human wisdom, has amazing speed in its legs. The world created by God is not made only of a “well-balanced order” expected by humans, but shows an order beyond human understanding.
39:19–30 “Who Gave These Instincts?”
The chapter speaks about the courage of the horse, the sharp vision of the eagle, and its power to soar high. None of these were made by humans. In the end, the reader is guided to understand that each animal is ordered in a way that does not obey humans.
- How to Read This Chapter
Traditionally, this chapter has often been read as a lesson that compares God’s almighty power with human ignorance and teaches that humans should not resist God but obey Him.
However, if we pay attention to the context, it is more natural to see this chapter as part of God’s words that question the meaning of Job’s suffering. The reasons for suffering are not explained, but God seems to want Job to widen his way of seeing the world itself.
- Application for Us Today
From this perspective, the message we should receive is that even things that seem useless are placed within God’s purpose and order and are precious to Him. In other words, this world exists under God’s care and wisdom.
Yet in reality, we often think as if humans are at the center and end up destroying the order of God’s creation by judging everything based on whether it is useful to us.
Job chapter 39 offers a new view of the world: things that exist beyond human control also have sure meaning. Even if we cannot quickly understand or explain it, the world is kept by God’s wisdom.
