今日は聖書の歴史の中でも、劇的な転換点を取り上げます。新しいリーダーが最初に発する「ひと言」が、組織の未来を決める――そんな場面、職場やニュースで見たことはありませんか？歴代誌第二10章は、まさにその瞬間を描いています。
イスラエルの王レハブアムは、民から「重い負担を軽くしてほしい」という願いを受けました。ところが彼は、強硬な言葉で応じてしまいます。その結果、イスラエルは北と南に分裂しました。しかし聖書は、これを単なる政治的失敗として終わらせません。「神がそうしむけられたからである」（歴代誌第二10:15）と記し、神の計画の中にこの出来事があることを示しているのです。
2．構造の全体像：シェケムの集会から「神から出たこと」へ
まず、歴代誌全体の構成について確認しましょう。歴代誌は大きく①系譜（1歴代誌1:1～9:44）、②ダビデ・ソロモンの時代（1歴代誌10:1～2歴代誌9章）、③ユダ南王国の歴史（2歴代誌10～36章）の三部に分かれています。10章は、この第三部の入口となり、イスラエル分裂の始まりを記しています。
舞台はシェケム。新王即位に合わせ、民はヤロブアムを通して課税や労役の軽減を求めます。ヤロブアムは、かつてソロモンに重用された人物ですが、預言者アヒヤから「あなたがイスラエルの新しいリーダーになる」と告げられ、ソロモンに反逆した後、長くエジプトに逃れていました（列王記第一11:28）。その彼が戻り、全イスラエルの代表として交渉に臨みます（10:1-4）。
レハブアムは長老と若者に助言を求めますが、ここで問題が起きます。彼は神に伺うことなく、人の意見に頼りました。そして最終的に、若者の「もっと厳しく」という進言を採用します。「王の心が自分の同胞の上に高ぶる」（申命記17:20）――まさにこの瞬間です（10:11-16）。交渉は決裂し、労役や税の徴収を担当する役人ハドラムが殺害され、王は急いで逃げることになります（10:17-19）。そして結論、「神がそうしむけられたからである」。歴代誌は、この分裂を神の主権のもとに位置づけています。
3．重荷（軛）を軽くせよ—民の声に耳を傾ける
ここで注目したいのは、民の願いが単なる不満ではなく、ソロモン時代の大規模事業で増えた社会的負担の見直しだったことです。歴代誌は「軛（重荷）」という言葉を使い、これは権力による抑圧があることを語ります。王の正統性は、民の重荷を軽くする選択から生まれる――この視点は現代にも通じます。
4．助言の違い—柔らかさか、さそりのむちか
長老たちは「柔らかく応じなさい」と勧めました。対して若者たちは「さそりのむち」という苛烈な表現で、王に強硬策を勧めます。聖書はこう語ります。「柔らかな答えは憤りを鎮めるが、激しいことばは怒りをあおる」（箴言15:1）。レハブアムは長老の助言を退け、若者の言葉を聞き入れました。この逆転が、分裂の直接的な引き金となったのです。
5．神の主権—失敗の中での「転換点」
歴代誌の著者は、分裂が主の主権のもとに起こったと結論づけます。「神がそうしむけられたからである」（15節）。人間の愚かさだけがすべてを決めたのではなく、神はその愚かさすらもご自身の計画に用いられるのです。背景には、王が律法に親しみ、一生読み続けるという規定（申命記17:18–20）があり、レハブアムの失敗はその逸脱でした。歴代誌は、帰還共同体に「今こそ御言葉に立ち返ろう」と呼びかけています。
6．恐れではなく従順へ—日々の御言葉
私たちの日常にも、恐れから強い言葉を使ったり、負担を増やす決断をすると、争いや分裂を招きます。だからこそ、御言葉を聴き、柔らかな応答で人の重荷を軽くする姿勢が求められます。たとえ失敗の最中でも、神は「転換点」を与えてくださいます。日頃から聖書を読み、心の内を整えることを、歴代誌第二10章をきっかけに始めてみてはいかがでしょうか。主は私たちの小さな従順を用い、共同体を癒やし、新しい一歩へと導いてくださいます。それでは、また明日。
【Season 6】2 Chronicles 10 – Rehoboam’s Reign and the Division of Israel
1. A Single Word That Caused Division
Today we look at one of the most dramatic turning points in Bible history. A new leader’s first words can decide the future of a nation. Have you seen similar moments in your workplace or in the news? 2 Chronicles 10 shows us such a moment.
King Rehoboam received a request from the people: “Please make our heavy burden lighter.” But he answered with harsh words. As a result, Israel was divided into north and south. Yet the Bible does not end this as a simple political failure. It says, “This turn of events was from God” (2 Chronicles 10:15), showing that God’s plan was behind it.
2. The Structure: From the Meeting at Shechem to “From God”
First, let’s look at the structure of Chronicles. It has three parts:
① Genealogies (1:1–9:44),
② The time of David and Solomon (10:1–2 Chronicles 9),
③ The history of Judah (10–36).
Chapter 10 begins the third part and tells how Israel was divided.
The scene is Shechem. At the new king’s coronation, the people asked for lighter taxes and labor through Jeroboam. Jeroboam had once served Solomon, but after a prophecy that he would lead Israel, he rebelled and fled to Egypt (1 Kings 11:28). Now he returns to speak for all Israel (10:1–4).
Rehoboam asked advice from elders and young men. But here is the problem: he did not ask God first. Finally, he chose the young men’s advice: “Be even harsher.” This was the moment when “the king’s heart became proud over his people” (Deuteronomy 17:20) (10:11–16). The talks broke down, the official in charge of forced labor and taxes, Hadoram, was killed, and the king fled (10:17–19). The chapter ends: “This turn of events was from God.” Chronicles shows that this division was under God’s control.
3. Lighten the Yoke—Listen to the People
The people’s request was not just complaint. It was about heavy burdens from Solomon’s big building projects. Chronicles uses the word “yoke,” meaning not only a farming tool but a picture of oppression by power. A king’s true strength comes from making the people’s burden lighter. This is still true today.
4. Two Types of Advice—Gentle or Scorpions?
The elders said, “Answer gently.” The young men said, “Use scorpions,” a cruel image. The Bible teaches: “A gentle answer turns away anger, but a harsh word stirs up wrath” (Proverbs 15:1). Rehoboam rejected the elders and listened to the young men. That choice caused the split.
5. God’s Sovereignty—A Turning Point in Failure
The writer says the division happened under God’s rule: “This turn of events was from God” (verse 15). Human failure did not decide everything. God used even that failure for His plan. Behind this is God’s command that a king should read His law every day (Deuteronomy 17:18–20). Rehoboam failed to do this. Chronicles calls the people who returned from exile: “Come back to God’s Word now.”
6. From Fear to Obedience—Daily in God’s Word
In our lives, fear can make us speak harsh words or add heavy burdens. That brings conflict and division. So we need to listen to God’s Word and answer gently, making others’ burdens lighter.
