1．「正しい行動でも、心が乗っていない」とどうなるか？
仕事や人間関係でも「一応うまくやっているけれど、本心からやっているわけではない」という問題を感じることはありませんか。歴代誌第二25章に登場する王アマツヤは、まさにそのような人物です。聖書には「主の目にかなうことを行ったが、全き心ではなかった」（25:2）と記されています。この章は、外側の行動と内側の心にずれがあると、どうなるのかを分かりやすく語っています。
2．背景――礼拝再建の時代に響く「心」のメッセージ
歴代誌は、バビロン捕囚から戻った人々へ向けて、神殿礼拝や心のあり方を中心に、歴史を語り直した書物です。王の価値は軍事力ではなく、主への誠実さと礼拝の純粋さで測られています。
3．本章の構成とポイント
1）アマツヤの正義（25:1–4）
アマツヤが王になると、父ヨアシュを殺した家臣たちを裁きました。しかし律法（申命記24:16）に従い、その子供たちは罰しませんでした。彼は正しい判断をしたのです。
2）依存的な信仰（25:5–10）
続いてアマツヤはセイル（エドム）を攻めるため、30万人の兵士を集めましたが、まだ足りないと感じ、さらに10万人の勇士を銀100タラントで雇いました。これに対し預言者が反対すると、アマツヤは迷いながらも費用や名誉を捨てて、傭兵を帰国させます。
3）勝利とその皮肉（25:11–13）
アマツヤはエドムとの戦いに勝利しますが、帰された兵たちはユダの町々で腹いせに略奪を行いました。神の言葉に従ったために、予想外の損害が発生したのです。
4）戦利品を「神」とする（25:14–16）
勝利のあと、彼は本来なら神に感謝すべきところを、戦利品で手に入れた異国の神々を拝むという、正反対の行動に出ます。預言者が再び警告しても、アマツヤはそれを無視し、王の権力で押し通しました。おそらく、預言者に従ったものの期待したほどの結果にならず、不満を感じていたのかもしれません。
5）知恵のたとえ話と慢心（25:17–20）
イスラエル王ヨアシュは「あざみとレバノン杉」のたとえ話で、アマツヤの無理な挑戦をやんわりととがめます。しかしアマツヤは聞かず、戦争へと突き進みます。
6）敗北と最期（25:21–28）
ユダは敗れ、城壁が壊され、神殿の財宝も奪われます。最終的には反乱が起き、アマツヤ王自身も暗殺されます。ここには、従順→満足→感謝→安定という流れではなく、従順→不満→反抗→破滅という悲しい図式が描かれています。
4．当時の人々へのメッセージ――礼拝の中心と「心の一致」
著者がバビロンから帰ってきた人々に伝えたかったことは、「主への愛による従順」こそが共同体を立て直す力になるということです。表面的だったり、迷信的に感じる従順は長続きしません。不満がたまれば、結局は自分の思う通りに行動し、権威を否定してしまうことになります。歴代誌の著者は、礼拝の純粋さと「内面の心の回復」の大切さを王の物語を通して語りました。これは、列王記には書かれていない、とても大事なポイントです。
5．現代の私たちへのアドバイス――本心から神に従う
毎日の終わりに「私は本当に、心から神に従っているだろうか」と祈りつつチェックしてみましょう。迷信や形式だけの信仰ではなく、心をこめて愛をもって応えたいものです。
神の言葉に従ったからといって、必ずしも得をするとは限りません。かえって損をしたように見えることもありますが、そうした場面こそ信仰が深まる機会と考えましょう。

[Season 6] Easy Guide to 2 Chronicles 25 — Amaziah
1. What happens when “the actions are right, but the heart is not”?
At work and in relationships, we sometimes feel, “I am doing things correctly, but not from my true heart.” King Amaziah in 2 Chronicles 25 is just like that. The Bible says, “He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not with a whole heart” (25:2). This chapter shows, in a simple way, what happens when our outer actions and inner heart are not in line.
2. Background — A message of “heart” for the time of rebuilding worship
Chronicles was written for people who returned from Babylon. It retells history with focus on temple worship and the inner heart. A king is valued not by military power, but by faithfulness to the LORD and the purity of worship.
3. Structure and key points of the chapter
(1) Limits of justice (25:1–4)
When Amaziah becomes king, he judges the servants who killed his father Joash. But he does not punish their children, following the Law (Deut. 24:16). This was a right decision.
(2) Testing the purity of dependence (25:5–10)
Next, Amaziah prepares to fight Seir (Edom). He gathers 300,000 soldiers, but feels it is not enough. He also hires 100,000 warriors from Israel for 100 talents of silver. A prophet warns him not to do this. Amaziah hesitates, but lets them go, giving up the money and his honor.
(3) Victory and its irony (25:11–13)
Amaziah wins the battle against Edom. But the soldiers he sent away attack towns in Judah out of anger. Because he obeyed God’s word, an unexpected loss happens.
(4) Making “gods” from war trophies (25:14–16)
After the victory, instead of giving thanks to God, Amaziah worships foreign gods taken as war trophies. A prophet warns him again, but Amaziah ignores him and uses royal power to continue. Maybe he felt unhappy because the result after obeying the prophet was not what he hoped.
(5) A wisdom parable and pride (25:17–20)
The king of Israel, Joash, tells a parable of “a thistle and a cedar of Lebanon,” gently stopping Amaziah’s risky challenge. But Amaziah does not listen and goes to war.
(6) Defeat and the end (25:21–28)
Judah loses the battle. Its wall is broken, and treasures of the temple are taken. In the end, a revolt happens, and King Amaziah is killed. Here we do not see the line “obedience → satisfaction → thanks → stability,” but the sad line “obedience → dissatisfaction → rebellion → ruin.”
4. Message to people of that time — Center of worship and “unity of heart”
The writer wanted the people who returned from Babylon to learn this: obedience from love for the LORD rebuilds the community. Obedience that is only on the surface or looks like superstition does not last. When dissatisfaction grows, people act by their own will and reject authority. Through the king’s story, the writer teaches the importance of pure worship and inner heart recovery. This point is not clearly told in Kings, but is very important in Chronicles.
5. Advice for us today — Obey God from the heart
At the end of each day, pray: “Do I truly obey God from my heart?” Let us answer God with love, not superstition or empty form.
Obedience to God’s word does not always bring gain. Sometimes it looks like loss. But such times are chances to deepen faith.
