1．導入 自分の判断で進むのか、主を信頼するのか
仕事でも家庭でも、私たちは毎日判断を重ねています。経験を積めば判断は洗練されます。しかし、「自分なりによく考えたのにうまくいかなかった」という経験もあるのではないでしょうか。
箴言3章が問いかけるのは、「どんな判断をするか」よりも先に、「何を基準にして判断するのか」ということです。自分の理解だけで物事を進めるのか。それとも、自分の外、主を信頼して歩むのか。本章はその違いを見つめます。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
箴言3章は、父が子に語りかける教えの形で書かれています。知恵は抽象的な思想ではなく、日々の生き方として示されます。
本章では「心」が繰り返し登場します。知恵は覚える知識ではなく、人の内側に根づくものとして描かれています。
また、「主に拠り頼め」と「自分の悟りに頼るな」という対比が中心に置かれています。この対比が章全体の鍵になります。
3．本章の流れ
では、本章の内容を見てまいりましょう。
1～12節「主を信頼して歩む」
教えを心に保つことの祝福が語られます。そして「心を尽くして主に拠り頼め。自分の悟りに頼るな」と勧められます。財産の用い方や苦難への向き合い方も、主への信頼と結び付けられています。
13～20節「知恵の価値」
知恵は金や銀よりも価値あるものとして描かれます。また主が知恵によって世界を造られたことが語られ、知恵が創造の秩序と結び付けられます。
21～35節「知恵ある人の歩み」
知恵は安心と平安をもたらします。そして隣人への誠実さ、争いを避ける姿勢、暴力をうらやまない生き方へと具体化されます。
4．本章の読み方
箴言3章は、「考えることをやめて神に任せよ」と教えているのではありません。問題にされているのは、自分の理解を最終的な基準にしてしまう姿勢です。
また、「財産で主をあがめよ」や苦難についての教えを、成功や繁栄の約束としてだけ読むのも注意が必要です。本章の重心は利益ではなく信頼にあります。豊かなときも苦しいときも、人生の土台をどこに置くのかが問われているのです。
5．私たちへのメッセージ
私たちは「自分で考え、自分で決めること」を大切にします。それ自体は悪いことではありません。しかし箴言3章は、自分の視野には限界があることを忘れないよう促します。
江戸時代の儒学者・佐藤一斎は、学問は知識を増やすだけでなく、生き方に表れなければ意味がないと語りました。箴言3章も同じように、知恵を実際の歩みと結び付けています。
大切なのは、自分の判断を捨てることではなく、その判断の土台を主への信頼の上に置くことです。その信頼は、お金との向き合い方にも、困難な時期の受け止め方にも、人との接し方にも表れていきます。
今日の判断の中で、私は何を最終的な拠り所にしているだろうか。その問いを心に留めながら、共に御言葉に聞いていきましょう。

[Season 6] Proverbs 3: Will We Go Through Life by Our Own Judgment Alone?
1. Introduction: Trusting Our Own Judgment or Trusting the Lord
At work and at home, we make decisions every day. As we gain experience, our judgment becomes better. Still, many of us have had this experience: “I thought about it carefully, but it did not work out.”
Proverbs 3 asks a deeper question before asking what decision we should make. It asks what standard guides our decisions. Will we move forward only by our own understanding? Or will we trust the Lord, who is beyond us, and walk with him? This chapter looks at the difference between these two ways.
2. The Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter
Proverbs 3 is written as a father speaking to his son. Wisdom is not shown as an idea only. It is shown as a way to live each day.
The word “heart” appears many times in this chapter. Wisdom is not only knowledge to remember. It is something that takes root within a person.
The main contrast is between “Trust in the Lord” and “Do not depend on your own understanding.” This contrast is the key to the whole chapter.
3. The Flow of This Chapter
Now, let us look at the flow of the passage.
Verses 1–12: “Walking in Trust in the Lord”
These verses speak about the blessing of keeping the teaching in the heart. They also say, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding.” The use of wealth and the way we face hardship are also connected to trust in the Lord.
Verses 13–20: “The Value of Wisdom”
Wisdom is described as more valuable than gold or silver. The chapter also says that the Lord made the world through wisdom. In this way, wisdom is connected to the order of creation.
Verses 21–35: “The Way of a Wise Person”
Wisdom brings safety and peace. It also becomes visible in honest treatment of neighbors, a desire to avoid needless conflict, and a life that does not envy violent people.
4. How to Read This Chapter
Proverbs 3 does not teach us to stop thinking and leave everything to God. The problem is making our own understanding the final standard.
We must also be careful not to read the teaching about honoring the Lord with our wealth, or the teaching about hardship, only as promises of success and wealth. The main focus of this chapter is not profit but trust. Whether life is full or difficult, the question is where we place its foundation.
5. A Message for Us
We value thinking for ourselves and making our own decisions. This is not wrong. However, Proverbs 3 reminds us not to forget that our view is limited.
Issai Sato, a Confucian scholar from the Edo period, said that learning has no meaning if it only increases knowledge and does not appear in the way we live. Proverbs 3 also connects wisdom with the way we actually walk.
What matters is not throwing away our judgment. It is placing the foundation of our judgment on trust in the Lord. That trust will appear in the way we handle money, receive difficult seasons, and treat other people.
In the decisions I make today, what am I finally depending on? Let us keep that question in our hearts as we listen to God’s Word together.
