1．その選択の「先」を見ているか

私たちは何かを選ぶとき、目の前の魅力には敏感です。心地よい言葉、理解してくれる人、自分を満たしてくれるもの。しかし、その選択の先がどのような結果をもたらすかまでは、十分に考えないこともあります。

箴言5章は、「今どう感じるか」ではなく、「その道の先に何があるのか」を見るよう促します。

2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈

箴言5章は、父から子への訓戒として語られる一連の教えの一部です。

本章では「よその女」という具体的な人物像が登場しますが、その描写を通して、神との約束や誠実さから人を引き離す誘惑が扱われています。また、「道」「戸口」「泉」などの比喩が繰り返され、人生の進路や人間関係が視覚的に描かれているのも特徴です。

3．本章の流れ

では、本章の内容を見てまいりましょう。

1～6節「甘い言葉と苦い終わり」

よその女の唇は蜜のようで、その言葉は滑らかです。しかし、その終わりは苦く、破滅へ向かう道として描かれます。

7～14節「近づいてはならない」

父は、その家の戸口に近づかないよう命じます。名誉や財産を失い、深い後悔に至る結末が語られます。

15～20節「与えられた関係の喜び」

自分の泉、自分の井戸の水を飲むように勧められます。結婚の関係の中にある喜びと誠実さが肯定的に描かれます。

21～23節「主が見ておられる道」

人の道は主の御目の前にあります。悪しき者は自らの咎に捕らえられるという警告で章は結ばれます。

4．本章の読み方

箴言5章は、単に性的な誘惑への注意だけを語る章ではありません。重心は「どの道を歩むか」にあります。

特に注目したいのは、誘惑が魅力的な姿で現れることです。本章は入口の魅力と出口の結果を対比しています。問題はその瞬間の感情ではなく、その選択が人をどこへ導くかです。

また、「近づくな」という教えは、自分の意志の強さを誇るのでなく、自らの弱さを自覚する知恵として読む必要があります。

5．私たちへのメッセージ

私たちは、「これくらいなら大丈夫」「今が満たされればそれでいい」と考えることがあります。しかし箴言5章は、知恵とは目先の魅力だけでなく、その先にある結末まで見る力だと教えます。

江戸時代の思想家・二宮尊徳は「遠きをはかる者は富み、近くをはかる者は貧す」と語りました。目先だけでなく先を見据える視点の大切さを示す言葉です。

箴言5章も同じように、今日の選択がどの道へ続いているのかを問いかけます。与えられている関係や責任を大切にしながら、主の前で歩む道を選び続けたいと思います。

[Season 6] Proverbs 5: What Lies Beyond an Attractive Path?

1. Introduction: Are You Looking at Where Your Choice Will Lead?

When we make a choice, we quickly notice what attracts us. Pleasant words, someone who understands us, and something that makes us feel satisfied can draw us in. Yet we do not always think carefully about what that choice may bring in the end.

Proverbs 5 urges us to look not only at how something feels now, but also at where that path will lead.

2. The Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter

Proverbs 5 is part of a series of teachings spoken by a father to his son.

This chapter introduces a specific figure called “the forbidden woman.” Through this picture, it deals with temptation that pulls a person away from faithfulness and from promises made before God. The chapter also repeats pictures such as a path, a doorway, and a spring. These images help us see the direction of life and the nature of human relationships.

3. The Flow of This Chapter

Now, let us look at the content of this chapter.

Verses 1–6: “Sweet Words and a Bitter End”

The lips of the forbidden woman are like honey, and her words are smooth. Yet her end is bitter, and her path leads to ruin.

Verses 7–14: “Do Not Go Near”

The father tells his son not to go near the door of her house. He describes an end marked by lost honor, lost wealth, and deep regret.

Verses 15–20: “Joy in the Relationship You Have Been Given”

The son is told to drink water from his own spring and from his own well. The chapter speaks positively about joy and faithfulness within marriage.

Verses 21–23: “The Lord Sees Every Path”

A person’s ways are before the eyes of the Lord. The chapter ends with a warning that the wicked are trapped by their own sin.

4. How to Read This Chapter

Proverbs 5 is not only a warning about sexual temptation. Its main concern is the path we choose to walk.

We should especially notice that temptation appears attractive. The chapter sets the appeal of the entrance against the result at the end. The main issue is not how we feel at one moment, but where the choice will finally lead us.

The command “Do not go near” should also be read as wise awareness of our weakness, not as confidence in the strength of our will.

5. A Message for Us

We sometimes think, “This should be fine,” or, “As long as I feel satisfied now, that is enough.” Yet Proverbs 5 teaches that wisdom looks not only at what seems attractive now, but also at the end that lies ahead.

Ninomiya Sontoku, a Japanese thinker from the Edo period, said, “Those who plan for the distant future become rich, but those who plan only for what is near become poor.” His words show the value of looking beyond what is close at hand.

In the same way, Proverbs 5 asks where today’s choices are leading us. We want to value the relationships and duties given to us and keep choosing a path that is right before the Lord.
