Dr. Makoto
[Season 6] Song of Songs 5 Explained Simply: Why Do We Search for Someone We Cannot Meet?
- Would You Go That Far to Search?
When your heart drifts apart from someone dear, you may try to repair the relationship but find that you cannot meet them. At such a time, if someone asked, “Why do you go that far? What is so special about that person?”, how would you answer? In Song of Songs 5, a woman who has lost the one she loves is asked exactly this question.
- Before Reading This Chapter
Verse 5:1 continues the scene from 4:16. In answer to the woman’s invitation, her beloved comes to the garden. But in verse 2, the scene changes completely. This time, her beloved is calling to her from outside the door. And when the woman finally opens the door, no one is there anymore. Because of this sudden change, Chapter 5 turns from “a song of two people drawing near” into “a song of searching for a beloved who has disappeared.”
- The Flow of This Chapter
Now let’s look at the content of this chapter.
Verses 2–6: Gone by the Time She Opens the Door
From Chapter 4 to 5:1, the love of the two reaches a peak for a time. The woman is called “bride,” and the man responds to her invitation to the garden. If we read this as the fulfillment of their marriage, then what is described from 5:2 is a time when the two, now husband and wife, miss each other. But the Song of Songs does not explain the cause in detail. What is certain is this: when the husband came to the door, the wife did not answer right away, and when she opened the door, the husband was no longer there. From this missed meeting, a new scene of Chapter 5 begins. The woman starts to search for her husband.
- The Searching Woman Is Hurt 5:7–8
But the search does not lead to a reunion. The watchmen who patrol the city strike the woman, hurt her, and take away her cloak (verse 7). The woman who went out to look for the one she loves suffers further harm along the way.
Even so, the woman does not give up her love for him. She asks the daughters of Jerusalem to tell him, “I am sick with love” (verse 8). This is not the name of an illness. It is an expression showing that her feelings of love are so strong that they reach even her body.
- What Is So Special About That Person? 5:9–16
The daughters hear the woman’s plea and ask, “How is your beloved better than other men?” (verse 9).
This question draws out the song of praise that follows. The woman does not answer in an abstract way, such as “He is wonderful.” She looks in order at his head, hair, eyes, cheeks, lips, arms, body, and legs, and she speaks of his beauty by comparing it to colors, fragrances, jewels, and trees (verses 10–15).
In Chapter 4, the man spoke of the woman’s beauty. Here, the woman looks at the man. The two in the Song of Songs are not fixed as the one who looks and the one who is looked at.
And the song of praise does not end as a judgment of his appearance. “This is my beloved, this is my friend” (verse 16). The beloved who has disappeared is a person with an attractive body, and at the same time he is a friend to whom the woman is closely bound.
- Our Message
At the beginning of the chapter, the one who stood outside the door was gone by the time she opened it. The reason for his absence and the time of their reunion are not explained. Even so, just because he is not there, his worth is not lost.
When hearts drift apart and it is hard to repair a relationship, we may not be able to cut off our feelings easily by saying, “I should just forget.” That is because that person was not just anyone.
In Song of Songs 5, when the woman is asked why she searches, she speaks of the person’s specific appearance. And at the end she says that he is her “beloved” and her “friend.” To love is not only to praise an ideal image. It is to be able to say, in your own words, “What kind of person is this to me?”
Let’s read the Bible together again tomorrow.
