Dr. Makoto

[Season 6] Song of Songs 6 Explained Simply: Can Love Be Lost When We Are Apart?

  1. A Time When He Cannot Be Found

When feelings drift apart from someone dear to us, anxiety grows. It is because we feel as if the relationship itself has been lost. The woman in the Song of Songs also searched for the one she loved in the city at night. After spending time apart, how will the two speak about each other once again?

  1. Before Reading This Chapter

In Chapter 5, the woman loses the one she loves. She searches all over the city, and the watchmen hurt her. The daughters who hear her story offer at the beginning of Chapter 6, “Let us search with you.”

Chapter 6 has three scenes: the search, words of praise, and a move to the garden. But Chapter 6 is not about where the two meet again. Rather, what is placed at the center of the chapter is the relationship between the two. It is important to read with attention to how the two speak about each other.

  1. The Flow of This Chapter

Verses 1–3: Answering the Search Question with Their Relationship

To the daughters’ question, the woman answers, “My beloved has gone down to his garden” (verse 2). The garden has become a scene that stands for their close fellowship. Then she goes on: “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine” (verse 3).

What the woman said when she was asked where he was is their relationship. Even while he could not be found and they were apart, the bond between them had not changed.

Verses 4–10: Praise That Does Not Change

Next, the man praises the woman. “You are beautiful as Tirzah, lovely as Jerusalem” (verse 4). Both are names of cities, and they express her beauty as images. The man also sings of her as an “army with banners,” someone who draws people’s eyes and overwhelms those who look at her (verses 4–5).

The comparisons for her hair, teeth, and cheeks are almost the same as the words of Chapter 4 (verses 5–7). It means that the man’s way of seeing her and his feelings have not changed, even after the misunderstanding between them. Furthermore, even if there are many queens and concubines, he says, “The pure one is the only one” (verses 8–9). By contrast with the many, she stands out as someone who cannot be replaced. The praise of her in verse 10 grows brighter, to the dawn, the moon, and the sun (verse 10).

Verses 11–13: From the Garden to the Next Scene

In verse 11 it says, “I went down to the grove of nut trees.” It was to see the new green in the valley, to see whether the vines had budded and the pomegranates were in bloom. Hebrew first-person verbs do not distinguish between male and female. So it cannot be decided by grammar alone whether this “I” is the woman or the man. This is a point that makes an important difference in interpretation (see the YouTube deep-dive study). But in either case, what the eyes are turned to is the budding of the garden. It is a place where the coming of spring can be read as overlapping with the budding of love.

Verse 12 is especially hard to understand, even within the Song of Songs. After the words “I did not know,” a chariot appears, but translations differ. As one reading, it can be understood as describing how her heart was thrilled without her knowing it.

Then in verse 13, the woman who until now has been called “my dove” and “the pure one” is called “the Shulammite” for the first time. The voice that calls out wants to look at her and says, “Return,” four times. “The dance of two camps” brings to mind a dance by two groups of dancers (it is also read as the place name Mahanaim). The beauty of the woman, which had been quietly gazed at, changes from here into a beauty with movement. It leads to the praise in Chapter 7.

  1. Our Message

When we are apart from someone we love and distance grows between us, we may feel that even the relationship has been lost. But Chapter 6 shows the two saying of each other, without hesitation, “mine” and “the only one,” even about someone they cannot meet.

The certainty of love is not decided only by whether the other person is near. It shows in whether you can speak of that person as the one and only, precious person for you, even when you cannot meet and even when you drift apart. The depth of love cannot be measured only by how often you meet or how long you spend together. Song of Songs 6 quietly teaches us this. Let’s read the Bible together again tomorrow.
