1．将来が見えない時                                    

将来がはっきりしないとき、私たちは新しい情報を集め、これからの見通しを立てようとします。これはとても大切なことです。しかし、情報を増やせば必ず安心できるとは限りません。かえって状況が複雑になって、何を頼りにすれば良いのか分からなくなることもあるのです。

詩篇111篇は、「未来のことを考える前に、まず過去に目を向けなさい」と語りかけています。ただし、それは昔を懐かしむためではありません。歴史の中で神が何を行い、どんな方として現れたのかを改めて確かめるためです。この詩篇の核心メッセージは明確です。神の御業を覚えておくことが、今を生き、未来へ進むための知恵になるのです。

2．本篇の歴史的・文学的文脈

詩篇111篇は「ハレルヤ」という賛美の言葉で始まります。原文では、冒頭を除く二十二の行がヘブル語のアルファベット順に並ぶ、いわゆる「いろは歌」のような形で作られています。これは単に技巧を見せるためだけでなく、神の御業を記憶し、共同体で語り継ぐ仕組みとして用いられていたと考えられます。

詩篇が成立した正確な時期は分かっていませんが、一般に111篇は112篇とセットで読まれます。111篇は神の御業とご性質を歌い、112篇はその神を畏れる人の歩みを書いています。まず神がどんな方かを知り、そのうえで人がどう生きるのかが続きます。この順序がとても大切です。

3．本篇の流れ

1節「会衆の中で始まる賛美」

詩人は、自分ひとりで感じたことを語るのではなく、「正しい者が集う会衆の中で」心を込めて主に感謝する、と宣言します。信仰の記憶は一人の中だけに留めるのではなく、みんなで分かち合い、確かめ合うところから始まるのです。

2～4節「調べ、語り継ぐべき御業」

詩人は、主の御業は偉大であり、それを愛する人々は熱心に調べると言います。ここでいう賛美は、ただ繰り返す掛け声ではありません。神が何をされたのかをていねいに調べ、その御業に現れる栄光、正しさ、恵み、あわれみを見出すことです。そして、神ご自身がその素晴らしい御業が人に覚えられるようにされました、と語られています。

5～6節「契約を忘れない神」

次に、神がご自分を敬う者に食べ物を与え、契約をずっと守り続けておられることが強調されます。これは、荒野での養いや約束の地への導きなど、イスラエルの歴史を思わせる内容です。大事なのは、人は神を忘れがちですが、神は自分の約束を決して忘れない、ということです。

7～9節「御業も御言葉も確かである」

神の手による業は真実で公正です。その命令も揺らぎません。神は約束を言葉で終わらせず、歴史の中で実際に成し遂げます。この実現こそが、民を救い出す御業として現れました。だから詩人は、神の契約はずっと続き、その御名は聖なるもの、畏れるべきものだと語ります。

10節「知恵への結論」

最後に、「主を恐れることは知恵の始まり」と結ばれます。これは箴言の中心と同じ考え方です。突然知恵について語りだしたようでいて、実は1～9節で確かめた神の御業と誠実さの上に立ち、その神を人生の中心に敬い、御言葉に従うことが本当に賢い生き方だとまとめているのです。詩篇111篇が知恵の土台を説明し、箴言はその知恵を日々の生活に広げていく、という読み方ができます。

4．本篇の読み方

「主の御業」とは何でしょうか。まず思い浮かぶのは、神がイスラエルの民をエジプトから救い出し、荒野で食べ物を与え、約束の地へ導いた出来事です。しかし、詩人の視点はそれだけに留まりません。神が世界を造り、日々人を支え、約束を守り、民を救われる働き全体を見つめています。つまり、この詩篇は出エジプトという大きな救いを思い起こしながら、そこに示された神の確かさが今も変わらないことを歌っています。

また、「主を恐れる」とは、神を怖がってただ怯えることではありません。神の大きさと聖さを認めて自分の判断に固執せず、神の御言葉を自分の考えや行動の基準とすることを意味します。知恵とは情報が多いことではなく、誰を土台に現実を理解し、どのように選び取っていくか、ということです。

5．現代の私たちへの適用

私たちは、昨日の情報がすぐに古くなってしまう時代を生きています。そのせいか、「新しいことを知る」ことには熱心でも、「絶対に忘れてはいけないことを心にとめ続ける」ことは、ついおろそかにしがちです。しかし詩篇111篇は、未来の確かさが最新情報だけで得られるわけではない、と教えています。将来が見えないときこそ、神が今まで何をしてくださったかを思い出すことが、これからの一歩を選ぶ土台になるのです。

神がこれまでどのように支え、導き、約束を守ってきたかを思い起こすと、過去は単なる記録ではなく、今を判断する基準になります。不安なときこそ、これまで助けられたことや守られた約束、導かれた出来事を一つひとつ思い出してみましょう。神の御業を振り返ることは、ただ懐かしむためではなく、今の選択を神の確かさに照らして新たに考えることです。そこから、状況に左右されない知恵と、今日踏み出すべき一歩が見えてきます。また明日、お会いしましょう。©Dr. Makoto

Psalm 111 Explained Simply: Remembering God’s Works Gives Wisdom for the Future

1. When the Future Is Unclear

When the future is unclear, we collect new information and try to see what may happen next. This is important. Yet more information does not always bring peace. It can make life feel more complex, and we may not know what to trust.

Psalm 111 tells us to look back before we look ahead. This is not about living in the past. It is about seeing what God has done in history and what His actions show about Him. The message is clear. Remembering God’s works gives us wisdom to live today and move into the future.

2. The Historical and Literary Context

Psalm 111 begins with “Praise the Lord.” In Hebrew, the twenty-two lines after this opening follow the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in order. It is something like an alphabet poem. This form was not only a display of skill. It helped people remember God’s works and speak about them together.

We do not know the exact time when this psalm was written. However, Psalm 111 is often read together with Psalm 112. Psalm 111 sings about God’s works and character. Psalm 112 describes the life of a person who fears God. First we learn who God is. Then we see how a person should live. This order is important.

3. The Flow of the Psalm

Verse 1: Praise Begins in the Assembly

The psalmist does not speak only about a private feeling. He says that he will thank the Lord with his whole heart among the upright and in the assembly. The memory of faith is not kept inside one person. It begins as people share it and confirm it together.

Verses 2–4: Works to Study and Pass On

The psalmist says that the Lord’s works are great and that those who love them study them. Praise here is not an empty cry. It means looking carefully at what God has done and seeing His glory, justice, grace, and mercy in His works. God has also caused His wonderful works to be remembered.

Verses 5–6: The God Who Remembers His Covenant

God gives food to those who fear Him, and He remembers His covenant forever. These words bring to mind Israel’s history, including food in the wilderness and the gift of the promised land. People may forget God, but God never forgets His promise.

Verses 7–9: His Works and His Word Are Sure

The works of God’s hands are true and just. His commands do not change. God does not leave His promise as words alone. He brings it to pass in history. This became clear when He redeemed His people. For this reason, the psalmist says that God’s covenant lasts forever and that His name is holy and worthy of fear.

Verse 10: The Conclusion About Wisdom

The psalm ends by saying, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This is also a key idea in Proverbs. The psalm has not suddenly changed its subject. Verses 1–9 have shown God’s works and faithfulness. The conclusion is that true wisdom means honoring this God as the center of life and obeying His word. Psalm 111 shows the foundation of wisdom, and Proverbs carries that wisdom into daily life.

4. How to Read This Psalm

What are “the works of the Lord”? We may first think of God bringing Israel out of Egypt, giving food in the wilderness, and leading the people into the promised land. Yet the psalmist looks beyond those events. He sees all of God’s work: creating the world, supporting people each day, keeping His promise, and redeeming His people. The psalm remembers the great rescue from Egypt and says that the God revealed there is still faithful today.

To “fear the Lord” does not mean hiding from God in terror. It means seeing His greatness and holiness, refusing to treat our own judgment as final, and making His word the standard for our thoughts and actions. Wisdom is not having the most information. It is knowing whom to trust as we understand life and choose our next step.

5. Message for Us Today

We live in a time when yesterday’s information quickly becomes old. We are eager to learn what is new, but we often give too little attention to what must not be forgotten. Psalm 111 teaches that the latest information alone cannot make the future secure. When we cannot see what lies ahead, remembering what God has already done gives us a foundation for the next step.

When we remember how God has supported, guided, and kept His promises, the past becomes more than a record. It becomes a standard for judging the present. When you are uncertain, remember the help you received, the promises God kept, and the ways He guided you. Looking back at God’s works is not simple nostalgia. It means testing today’s choices by His faithfulness. From this comes wisdom that is not controlled by circumstances, and we begin to see the step we should take today.
