1．繰り返される独特のリズム
詩篇136篇は、読むだけでも独特なリズムを感じる詩です。26節すべてに「その恵みはとこしえまで」という言葉が繰り返されます。この反復のために、単調な詩のようにも見えます。しかし実際には、この繰り返しこそが詩篇136篇の中心です。詩人は、神のなさった一つ一つの出来事を思い出しながら、そのすべてに共通する意味を示そうとしています。それが「主の恵みはとこしえまで」という告白なのです。
2．本篇の歴史的・文学的文脈
この詩篇は礼拝の中で用いられた感謝の賛美歌と考えられています。司会者が神の御業を語り、会衆が「その恵みはとこしえまで」と応答したのかもしれません。ユダヤ人の伝統では「大ハレル」と呼ばれ、特別な礼拝で重んじられてきました。
内容を見ると、イスラエルの歴史全体が簡潔にまとめられています。神は天地を創造され、エジプトから民を救い出し、荒野を導き、約束の地を与え、さらに現在も人々を養っておられる。その歴史の要約が、この一篇の中に収められているのです。
3．本篇の流れ
1〜3節「感謝への招き」 まず「主」「神々の神」「主たちの主」という三重の称号によって、神への感謝が呼びかけられます。
4〜9節「創造の御業」続いて、天と地、太陽、月、星々の創造が語られます。歴史が始まる前から働いておられる世界の創造主が示されます。
10〜15節「出エジプト」エジプトからの救いと葦の海のできごと、さらに荒野での導きが振り返られます。
17～22節「約束の成就」シホンとオグへの勝利、そしてイスラエルの土地相続の出来事が語られます。神の約束が具体的な歴史の中で実現したことが強調されます。
23～26節「現在の養いと結び」ここから視点が現在に移り、神が民を顧み、救い出し、すべての生き物を養っていることが語られます。そして再び感謝の呼びかけで締めくくられます。
本篇の読み方
この詩篇を理解する鍵は、「恵み」という言葉です。ここでの恵みは、単なる優しい気持ちや感情的な愛ではありません。神が契約に忠実であり続けること、どんな時代にも御自分の民を見捨てないことを意味しています。
そのため詩篇136篇は、奇跡の一覧表ではありません。創造も、出エジプトも、荒野の導きも、土地の相続も、現在の養いも、それぞれ別々の出来事として並べられているのではなく、「神の変わらない恵み」の証拠として並べられています。
詩人は歴史の出来事そのものではなく、その背後で一貫して働いている神の忠実さを見ているのです。
現代の私たちへのメッセージ
私たちは神に感謝するとき、目の前の祝福だけを数えがちです。しかし詩篇136篇は、もっと大きな視点へと私たちを招きます。
神の恵みは、良い出来事があった時だけ存在するのではありません。人生全体を振り返ったとき、導き、支え、養い続けてくださった神の忠実さとして見えてくるものです。
この詩篇は、神の民が過去を忘れないように歴史を歌いました。同じように私たちも、自分の人生と信仰の歩みを振り返りながら、「その恵みはとこしえまで」と告白するよう招かれています。
創造の時から歴史を導き、今も人々を養っておられる神は変わりません。詩篇136篇は、目の前の状況を超えて、神の変わらない契約的な愛と忠実さを見つめ続けるよう、私たちを励ましているのです。

The Flow
Verses 1–3: An Invitation to Give Thanks
First, the people are called to thank God through three titles: “the Lord,” “the God of gods,” and “the Lord of lords.”
Verses 4–9: The Work of Creation
Next, the creation of heaven and earth, the sun, the moon, and the stars is described. God is shown as the Creator of the world, at work before human history began.
Verses 10–15: The Exodus
The psalm looks back on the rescue from Egypt, the event at the Red Sea, and the guidance through the wilderness.
Verses 17–22: The Fulfillment of the Promise
The victories over Sihon and Og are described, along with Israel’s inheritance of the land. The psalm stresses that God’s promise became real in history.
Verses 23–26: Present Care and the Closing
From here, the view moves to the present. God remembers His people, rescues them, and gives food to every living thing. The psalm then closes with another call to give thanks.
How to Read This Psalm
The key to understanding this psalm is the word “steadfast love.” Here, steadfast love is not only a gentle feeling or emotional love. It means that God remains faithful to His covenant and never leaves His people in any age.
For this reason, Psalm 136 is not a list of miracles. Creation, the Exodus, guidance through the wilderness, the gift of the land, and present care are not placed side by side as separate events. They are all given as evidence of God’s unchanging steadfast love.
The psalmist looks beyond the events of history and sees the faithfulness of God working through them all.
Message for Us Today
When we thank God, we often count only the blessings before us. Yet Psalm 136 invites us to take a wider view.
God’s steadfast love does not exist only when good things happen. When we look back over our whole life, we can see it in the faithfulness of God, who has continued to guide, support, and care for us.
This psalm sang history so that God’s people would not forget the past. In the same way, we are invited to look back on our own lives and our walk of faith and confess, “His steadfast love lasts forever.”
The God who created the world, guided history, and still provides for living things has not changed. Psalm 136 encourages us to look beyond the situation before us and keep our eyes on God’s unchanging covenant love and faithfulness. See you again tomorrow.
