1．神は本当に私を知っておられるのか
私たちは時々、「誰にも自分のことを分かってもらえない」と感じることがあります。表面的な行動は説明できても、本当の思いや不安までは伝わらないからです。
では、神はどうなのでしょうか。本当に私たちのことを知っておられるのでしょうか。詩篇139篇は、その問いに正面から向き合う詩です。
2．本篇の歴史的・文学的文脈
詩篇139篇はダビデの名を持つ詩で、祈りと賛美が一つになった作品です。実際にダビデ自身が作ったのか、後代にダビデの名のもとで伝えられたのかは分かりません。しかし、この詩は長くイスラエルの礼拝の中で用いられ、多くの人々に祈られてきました。
この詩の特徴は、神が人間の行動だけでなく、その内面までも知っておられることです。さらに、神が人を母の胎内で形造られた創造者として描かれている点にも、この詩独自の特徴があります。
また、「知る」という言葉は本篇の鍵語です。ここでいう「知る」とは、単なる情報として知ることではなく、人格的な関わりの中で深く知ることを意味しています。
3．本篇の流れ
1～6節「神は私を知っておられる」
詩人はまず、神が自分のすべてを知っておられると告白します。座ることも立つことも、思いも言葉も神には隠されていません。
7～12節「神から逃れられる場所はない」
続いて詩人は、神の臨在について語ります。天に上っても、よみに下っても、海の果てに住んでも、神はそこにおられます。人は神の目から逃れることができません。
13～18節「神は私を造られた方」
神がここまで人を知っておられるのは、神ご自身が人を造られた創造者だからです。詩人は、母の胎内で自分が神によって形造られたことを思い起こします。神の知恵と計画の深さに驚嘆します。自分の骨組みさえ、神には隠れていませんでした。
19～22節「神の側に立つ決意」
ここで、突然雰囲気が変わります。詩人は神に敵対する者たちについて語り、悪を拒絶する姿勢を示します。神を深く知るほど、神に逆らうものをそのまま受け入れることはできない、と詩人は神への忠誠を強く表明するのです。
23～24節「神よ、私を探ってください」
詩は最後に祈りで閉じられます。冒頭で「あなたは私を知っておられます」と語った詩人は、最後に「私を探り、私の心を知ってください」と願います。
4．本篇の読み方
詩篇139篇は、「神はあなたを特別に造られた」という励ましの箇所として読まれることがよくあります。それは確かに大切なテーマです。
しかし、本篇の重心はそこだけではありません。神の全知、遍在、創造者としての御業が語られ、その告白は悪への拒絶と自己吟味へと続いていきます。
また16節についても、人生のすべてがあらかじめ決定されていることを語っているというよりも、神が人の人生を完全に知っておられることを強調していると読む方が、詩全体の流れによく合います。
5．私たちへのメッセージ
人は、自分を理解してくれる人を求めます。しかし、どれほど親しい人でも、私たちの心を完全に知ることはできません。
詩篇139篇は、そのような人間の限界の中で、「神は私を知っておられる」と告白します。神は私たちの行動だけでなく、思いも、言葉も、人生の歩みも知っておられます。
そのように書かれているのは、単に私たちに慰めを与えようとするためではありません。詩人は最後に、「私を探り、私の心を知ってください」と祈ります。神に知られていることは安心であると同時に、自分自身を神の光の中で見つめ直すことでもあるからです。ではまた明日©Dr. Makoto
Psalm 139 Explained Simply: God Knows Me
1. Does God Really Know Me?
Sometimes we feel that no one understands us. We can explain our actions on the outside, but it is hard to share our true thoughts and worries.
What about God? Does He really know us? Psalm 139 faces this question directly.
2. Historical and Literary Context
Psalm 139 is connected with the name of David. It brings prayer and praise together in one work. We do not know whether David himself wrote it or whether it was later passed down under his name. However, this psalm was used for many years in the worship of Israel, and many people prayed its words.
A special feature of this psalm is that God knows not only human actions but also what is inside a person. Another unique feature is that God is described as the Creator who formed a person in the mother’s womb.
The word “know” is a key word in this psalm. Here, “know” does not simply mean having information about someone. It means knowing someone deeply through a personal relationship.
3. The Flow of the Psalm
Verses 1–6: God Knows Me
The psalmist first says that God knows everything about him. His sitting and standing, his thoughts and words, are not hidden from God.
Verses 7–12: There Is No Place to Escape from God
The psalmist then speaks about God’s presence. If he goes up to heaven, goes down to the depths, or lives on the far side of the sea, God is there. No one can escape God’s sight.
Verses 13–18: God Is the One Who Made Me
God knows people so completely because He is the Creator who made them. The psalmist remembers that God formed him in his mother’s womb. He is amazed by the depth of God’s wisdom and purpose. Even his bones were not hidden from God.
Verses 19–22: A Decision to Stand on God’s Side
The mood suddenly changes here. The psalmist speaks about those who oppose God and shows that he rejects evil. He believes that the more deeply he knows God, the less he can accept what stands against Him. In this way, the psalmist strongly expresses his loyalty to God.
Verses 23–24: Search Me, O God
The psalm ends with a prayer. At the beginning, the psalmist says, “You know me.” At the end, he asks, “Search me and know my heart.”
4. How to Read This Psalm
Psalm 139 is often read as an encouraging passage that says, “God made you in a special way.” This is certainly an important theme.
However, this is not the only focus of the psalm. It speaks about God’s complete knowledge, His presence everywhere, and His work as Creator. This confession then leads to the rejection of evil and to self-examination.
Verse 16 also does not necessarily say that every part of life was decided beforehand. It may be better to understand it as an emphasis on God’s complete knowledge of a person’s life. This reading fits the flow of the whole psalm.
5. A Message for Us
People want someone to understand them. However, even those closest to us cannot fully know our hearts.
Psalm 139 speaks within this human limit and declares, “God knows me.” God knows not only our actions but also our thoughts, our words, and the path of our lives.
These words were not written only to comfort us. At the end, the psalmist prays, “Search me and know my heart.” Being known by God brings assurance. At the same time, it means looking at ourselves in God’s light.
