2．本篇の歴史的・文学的文脈
この詩は「ダビデの賛歌」と題されていますが、具体的な出来事や背景は特定されていません。しかし、内容からは、陰で策略がめぐらされている状況、たとえば宮廷内での密告や中傷などが背景にあったと考えられます。詩篇12篇や140篇のように「舌」や「言葉の欺き」をテーマにした詩とも共通し、詩篇全体で繰り返し表れる主題です。
また、構成としては個人的な嘆きから始まり、敵の様子の描写、神による逆転、最後に全体を包む賛美へと流れる、典型的な嘆きの詩となっています。
3．本篇の流れ
さて、ここからは詩篇64篇の流れに沿って内容を確認していきます。
1–2節「守りを求める祈り」
最初に、詩人は恐れの中から率直に神に助けを求めます。特に、見えない陰謀から守ってほしいと、目に見えない脅威への不安を訴えています。
3–6節「敵の激しい言葉」
敵は舌を剣のように鋭くし、言葉を矢のように放ちます。しかしそれは正面からではなく、陰で、こっそりと行われます。人の心の奥で計画された悪意は外からは見えません。そのため、余計に恐ろしく感じられます。
7–8節「神による不意打ちと逆転」
ところが、流れはここで大きく変わります。神ご自身が状況に介入し、敵に向かって突然矢を放たれます。さらに、今度は敵の「舌」自体が彼らを倒す原因となります。つまり、神が介入されるとき、その言葉の攻撃が逆に自分たちを滅ぼすことになるのです。
9–10節「義人の喜び」
この神の働きが広く知れわたると、人々は神を恐れ、その御業を語り継げるようになります。そして、正しい者は神をよりどころとし、神の素晴らしさを誇りに思い、心から喜ぶのです。
4．本篇の読み方
この詩全体で大切なのは、「隠れた悪意、特に陰口や中傷」に対して「神が突然介入し逆転する」ことです。ポイントは7節で、人間の行いが神の力によってひっくり返される構造になっています。
多くの場合、この詩は「人を傷つけるような陰口や中傷はやめましょう」という道徳的な教訓としてだけ語られがちですが、それだけでは本質を捉えきれません。この詩の本質は、人間の倫理ではなく、「神がどのように行動してくださるか」です。神は、人にはどうにもできない陰の行動や隠れた悪を明るみに出し、公正な裁きをされることを強く伝えています。
5．現代の私たちへの適用
私たちもまた、見えない場所でどんな噂話をされ、何が語られているのか、不安を感じることがあります。言い分を伝えることもできず、尾ひれがついてどんどん話が歪められ、心が深く悩むことも珍しくありません。
しかしこの詩は、そんなときこそ視点を変えるよう教えてくれます。大切なのは「何が言われているか」ではなく、「神がどのようになさるか」です。神は隠れた悪をしっかり見ておられ、時には思いもよらない形で逆転をもたらしてくださいます。その働きはやがて皆に知られていきます。
だからこそ、自分を守ろうと気を張りすぎず、すべてを神に委ねて信頼し、前に進むことを考えてみましょう。誰かが何かを言えば、その言葉はやがて言った本人に返ってきます。神は正しく、また良い方です。その神に信頼すること――それがこの詩篇64篇が私たちに示す、現実的な一歩なのです。それでは、また明日。

1. Introduction
Have you ever felt uneasy, thinking that someone may be talking about you behind your back?
Even if you do not face them directly, words whispered in secret and rumors that spread without warning can weigh on your heart more than you expect.
How should we face this kind of attack that we cannot see?
Psalm 64 quietly offers an answer to this question.
2. Historical and Literary Context
This psalm is titled “A Psalm of David,” but we cannot identify a specific event or situation.
However, the content suggests a setting where hidden plans are being made, such as false reports or slander inside a court.
It shares a theme with other psalms, like Psalm 12 and Psalm 140, where “the tongue” and deceitful words are important ideas.
The structure begins with a personal cry, then describes the enemy, shows God’s sudden action, and ends with praise for all people.
This is a typical pattern of a lament psalm.
3. The Flow of the Psalm
Let us follow the flow of Psalm 64.
Verses 1–2: “A prayer for protection”
The psalmist begins by asking God for help from a place of fear.
He asks especially for protection from hidden attacks that cannot be seen.
Verses 3–6: “The enemy’s sharp words”
The enemies make their tongues sharp like swords.
They send out words like arrows.
But they do this in secret, not face to face.
The evil plans formed in a person’s heart cannot be seen from the outside, which makes them feel more frightening.
Verses 7–8: “God’s sudden action and reversal”
Then the flow suddenly changes.
God steps into the situation and sends His arrow against them.
Their own “tongue” becomes what brings them down.
When God acts, their attack turns back on them.
Verses 9–10: “The joy of the righteous”
When this work of God becomes known, people stand in awe and speak of what He has done.
Those who are right place their trust in the LORD and rejoice in Him.
4. How to Read This Psalm
The key idea in this psalm is this: hidden evil, especially gossip and slander, is overturned by God’s sudden action.
The turning point comes in verse 7, where human actions are reversed by God’s power.
This psalm is often read only as a moral message that says, “Do not speak harmful words about others.”
However, that is not the main point.
The focus is not human behavior, but how God works.
God sees hidden evil and brings it to light.
He judges it in a way that people cannot do on their own.
5. Message for Us Today
We also feel anxious about what may be said in places we cannot see.
We may not have a chance to explain ourselves, and words can change and grow in ways that hurt us deeply.
This psalm teaches us to shift our focus at such times.
What matters is not what is being said, but what God will do.
God clearly sees hidden things and can bring a change in ways we cannot expect.
In time, His work becomes known to others.
So instead of trying to protect ourselves too much, we can entrust everything to God and move forward.
Words spoken against us will not simply stay as they are.
They may return to the one who spoke them.
God is just and good.
To trust Him is the practical step this psalm gives us.
