【シーズン6】詩篇84篇をわかりやすく解説 礼拝へ向かう道の幸い
1．「旅行」と「巡礼」
みなさん、「旅行」と「巡礼」は何が違うのでしょうか。旅行は目的地に着くことが大切です。しかし巡礼は、目的地へ向かう道そのものに意味があります。
古代イスラエルの人々は、年に数回、エルサレム神殿へ巡礼しました。北のガリラヤから来る人もいれば、南の町から来る人もいます。何日も歩き続け、ようやく神殿にたどり着くのです。
ところが詩篇84篇を読むと、詩人は神殿に着いた喜びだけを語っているのではありません。実は、「神へ向かう道そのもの」が祝福だと語っているのです。
私たちは毎日、いろいろなものを目指して生きています。仕事の成果、学業の目標、人間関係の課題、老後への備え。ですが、その忙しさの中で、ふと立ち止まって考える必要があります。私は今、どこへ向かって歩いているのだろうか。詩篇84篇は、その大切な問いを私たちに投げかけています。
2．本篇の歴史的・文学的文脈
この詩篇の表題には「コラ人による」とあります。コラ人による詩篇として有名なのが42篇と43篇です。そこでは、詩人は神殿から遠く離れた場所におり、「鹿が谷川を慕いあえぐように、私のたましいはあなたを慕います」と神を求めていました。
つまり42篇が、「礼拝できない苦しみ」を歌う詩篇だとすれば、84篇は、「礼拝へ向かう喜び」を歌う詩篇だと言えるでしょう。
また本文には神殿礼拝が自然に描かれているため、多くの研究者はエルサレム神殿がまだ存在していた時代に成立したと考えています。そしてこの詩篇は、神殿という建物の立派さを賛美する歌ではありません。中心にあるのは、神殿におられる神ご自身への憧れです。
3．本篇の流れ
では、本篇の内容を順に見ていきましょう。
84:1-4「神の臨在への憧れ」
詩人は神殿を見つめながら、そこにおられる神を心から慕っています。祭壇の近くに巣を作る雀や燕を見て、自分もそのように神の近くにいたいと願っています。そして神の家に住み、いつも神を賛美できる人は幸いだと語るのです。
84:5-7「神へ向かう巡礼の道」
その幸いは神殿にいる人だけのものではありません。神を慕う人の心には神へ向かう道があります。巡礼者たちは涙の谷を通りますが、その谷は泉の湧く所へと変えられていきます。困難がなくなるのではなく、神へ向かう歩みの中で祝福が見いだされるのです。
84:8-9「神への祈り」
こうして神のもとへ来た礼拝者たちは祈ります。そして共同体を代表する「油注がれた者」、すなわちイスラエルの王のためにも神の恵みを願います。
84:10-12「神と共にある幸い」
そして詩人は、神の庭にいる一日は千日にまさると告白します。悪の中で栄えるより、神の家の門番でいる方が良いと言うのです。なぜなら神は太陽であり盾であり、恵みと栄光を与えてくださるお方だからです。
4．本篇の読み方
この詩篇を読むうえで最も大切なのは、「神殿を愛する詩」ではなく、「神を愛する詩」であるということです。たとえば5節には、「心の中に大路のある人」という不思議な表現が出てきます。
ある翻訳では「シオンへの大路」と補足されています。一方で、原文には実際には「シオン」という言葉はありません。そのため、人生の理想や信仰の志を表していると解釈する人もいます。
しかし前後の流れを見れば、ここで語られているのは神殿へ向かう巡礼路と理解するのが最も自然でしょう。つまり、この詩篇が語っている幸いとは、神殿に着いた人だけの幸いではなく、神へ向かっている人の幸いなのです。
また3節の雀や燕も同じです。ここでの中心は鳥ではありません。「鳥でさえ神の近くに住めるのに、私はもっと神の近くにいたい」という詩人の強い憧れが表現されているのです。
さらにこの詩篇では、「万軍の主」という呼びかけが何度も繰り返されます。万軍の主とは、全世界を支配する王なる神のことです。ところがその偉大な神が、人間に近づくことを許し、ご自分のもとへ招いておられる。この驚きこそが、詩篇84篇全体を支えている土台なのです。
5．現代の私たちへの適用
現代人は忙しく生きています。気づけば毎日、仕事に追われ、予定に追われ、不安に追われています。そしていつの間にか、「私はどこへ向かっているのだろう」
という問いを忘れてしまいます。しかし詩篇84篇は語ります。人生の祝福とは、問題がなくなることではありません。涙の谷を通らないことでもありません。そうではなく、
神へ向かう道を持っていること。それこそが本当の幸いだというのです。
人生の豊かさは、どこに住んでいるかでも、どれだけ成功しているかでもありません。心が神へ向かっていること。それが詩篇84篇の語る幸いです。

Psalm 84 Explained Simply — The Blessing of the Road Toward Worship
1. Travel and Pilgrimage
Everyone, what is the difference between travel and pilgrimage? In travel, arriving at the place is important. But in pilgrimage, the road toward the place also has meaning.
The people of ancient Israel made pilgrimages to the temple in Jerusalem several times a year. Some came from Galilee in the north. Others came from towns in the south. They walked for many days and finally arrived at the temple.
But when we read Psalm 84, the poet is not only speaking about the joy of arriving at the temple. He is also saying that the road toward God itself is a blessing.
Every day, we live while aiming at many things. Work results, school goals, relationship problems, and preparation for old age. But in that busy life, we need to stop and ask ourselves, Where am I walking now? Psalm 84 gives us that important question.
2. The Historical and Literary Context
The title of this psalm says that it is by the sons of Korah. Psalms 42 and 43 are also well-known psalms of the sons of Korah. In those psalms, the poet is far away from the temple and seeks God, saying, “As a deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for You.”
So if Psalm 42 is a psalm about the pain of not being able to worship, Psalm 84 can be called a psalm about the joy of going toward worship.
The text naturally describes temple worship. For that reason, many scholars think this psalm was formed while the temple in Jerusalem still existed. But this psalm is not a song that praises the beauty of the temple building. At the center is a longing for God Himself, who is present in the temple.
3. The Flow of the Psalm
Now let us look at the content of this psalm step by step.
Psalm 84:1–4 speaks of longing for God’s presence. The poet looks at the temple and deeply longs for the God who is there. He sees sparrows and swallows making nests near the altar, and he wishes to be close to God like them. Then he says that those who live in God’s house and always praise Him are blessed.
Psalm 84:5–7 speaks of the pilgrimage road toward God. This blessing is not only for those who are already in the temple. In the heart of the person who longs for God, there is a road toward Him. The pilgrims pass through the valley of tears, but that valley becomes a place of springs. The difficulty does not disappear, but blessing is found while walking toward God.
Psalm 84:8–9 speaks of prayer to God. The worshipers who have come to God pray. They also ask for God’s grace for the anointed one, the king of Israel, who represents the community.
Psalm 84:10–12 speaks of the blessing of being with God. The poet says that one day in God’s courts is better than a thousand days elsewhere. He says it is better to be a doorkeeper in the house of God than to prosper in evil. This is because God is a sun and shield, and He gives grace and glory.
4. How to Read This Psalm
The most important point in reading this psalm is that it is not a poem that loves the temple. It is a poem that loves God. For example, verse 5 has an unusual phrase, “the roads in their hearts.”
Some translations add “the roads to Zion.” But in the original text, the word “Zion” is not actually there. Because of this, some people understand it as a picture of life goals or a heart of faith.
Still, when we look at the flow before and after it, the most natural reading is that it speaks about the pilgrimage road toward the temple. In other words, the blessing in this psalm is not only for the person who has arrived at the temple. It is also for the person who is walking toward God.
The sparrows and swallows in verse 3 are similar. The main point is not the birds themselves. The poet is showing his strong longing by saying, “Even birds can live near God, and I want to be even closer to Him.”
This psalm also repeats the name “LORD of Armies” many times. The LORD of Armies is God the King, who rules the whole world. Yet this great God allows people to come near and invites them to Himself. This wonder is the foundation that supports the whole of Psalm 84.
5. Message for Us Today
People today live busy lives. Before we notice it, we are chased by work, schedules, and worry. Then, without realizing it, we forget the question, “Where am I going?” But Psalm 84 speaks to us. The blessing of life is not that all problems disappear. It is not that we never pass through the valley of tears.
Rather, true blessing is to have a road that leads toward God.
The richness of life is not decided by where we live or how successful we are. It is found in a heart that is turned toward God. That is the blessing Psalm 84 teaches.
