29:12–17「弱者を支える正義」助けを求める人の声にこたえ、目の見えない人の目になり、不正と闘ってきたとヨブは述べています。彼は自分の行動を振り返っています。
29:18–20「揺るがない将来の確信」このまま穏やかに人生を終えられるはずだという、深く根を張った木のような安心感がありました。
29:21–25「人々を導く言葉」ヨブの言葉は、恵みの雨を待つように大切に受け止められていました。こうして章全体は、静かな高まりのなかで終わります。しかし、この豊かさは、次の30章で一気に崩れ去ることになります。
４．読みの変遷──これまでどう読まれてきたか
この章はよく、「ヨブの高い徳」や「正しい人の手本」として読まれてきました。特に、弱い立場の人を守る姿勢は、説教などでも独立したテーマとして扱われることも多かった箇所です。それは、この章に描かれるヨブの姿が理想的であり、分かりやすいからでしょう。一方で、この章が30章への導入として置かれているという点は、十分に意識されてこなかった面もあります。
５．本来の文脈──この章の重心
29章の中心は、「私は正しかった」という主張ではありません。むしろ重要なのは、神の臨在や自分の社会的役割が確かに存在していたという、ヨブ自身の記憶が、今の神の沈黙の中で語られている点です。
ヨブは過去を振り返り「あれは幻想だった」「勘違いだった」と否定していません。同時に、「今はすべてが間違っている」と、現在を切り捨ててもいません。過去と現在の間にできた大きな断絶、その理由が分からないまま、ヨブはそれを無理に説明しようとせず、その断絶を抱えたまま神の前に立ち続けています。ここに、この章の重心があります。
６．現代の読み──文脈から見えてくるもの人は
心理学の言葉を使うなら、ここには「アンビギュイティ・トレランス（曖昧さ耐性）」が見られます。簡単に言えば、答えの出ない状態を、わからないまま持ちこたえる力です。これは諦めではありません。むしろ、成熟した大人にしかできない耐久力です。人は苦しくなると、すぐに過去を否定したり、今を嘆いたりしてしまいがちです。ヨブは、神と共に生きていた確かな実感を失った状況を、まだ整理できないまま、それでも信仰の場から離れまいとしてそれらをそのまま受け止めようとしているのです。それが、この章で描かれている姿です。

There may have been a time when work, relationships, and even your body felt strong, and you did not worry so much about the future. When the present feels painful, memories of those days often come back clearly.
Job chapter 29 speaks about this kind of remembering. It is not only simple nostalgia. It is the memory of someone who once had a clear and deep sense of living together with God, but who has now lost that feeling.
This chapter overlaps with our own experiences and quietly asks us a question: how should we speak about what we have lost?
- Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter
Job chapter 29 stands at the beginning of Job’s final speech, which continues through chapters 29 to 31. The arguments with his friends have ended, and from here Job speaks in a monologue. The structure is clear: chapter 29 looks at the past, chapter 30 describes the present, and chapter 31 is Job’s self-defense. Chapter 29 is the first step, where Job speaks about his blessed past.
One important point is the scene at the “city gate.” This reflects a society before the monarchy, where elders guided the town. This means Job is not only thinking emotionally. He is remembering a real role he once had in his community.

The center of chapter 29 is not the claim, “I was right.” What matters more is that Job remembers a time when God’s presence and his own social role were real. He speaks of these memories while God is now silent.
Job does not say, “That past was an illusion,” nor does he say, “Everything now is wrong.” He does not try to explain the deep break between past and present. Without understanding the reason for this gap, Job continues to stand before God and hold that tension. This is the true focus of the chapter.
