たとえば、まじめに働き、約束を守り、誰にも迷惑をかけていないのに、なぜか評価されず、トラブルが続き、原因のわからない不運に見舞われることがあります。一方、要領よく立ち回る人が何ごともなかったかのようにうまく生きていると感じることもあるでしょう。私たちは、そんな理不尽な現実に何度も直面します。「世の中とは結局こういうものなのか」「正しさには意味があるのか」と疑問に思うこともあるはずです。ヨブ記27章が扱っているのは、まさにこのような問いなのです。
これは信仰を持つ人だけの問題ではありません。説明のつかない出来事を前に、人はどのように正直さを保てるのか。その問いこそが、この章の中心になっています。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
ヨブ記27章は、友人たちとの長い議論が事実上、行き詰まったところに置かれています。三巡目の議論に入った際、ツォファルは沈黙し、対話が途切れました。その静けさの中で、ヨブが語り始めるのです。
ここから先はもはや「議論」ではありません。ヨブによる長い独白（27〜31章）の始まりとなっています。ヨブ自身が神との関係をどう理解しているかを語る場面が続きます。
3．本章の構造（当時の聞こえ方の再構成）
それでは、27章の内容を順に見ていきましょう。
27:1–6「誓いとしての潔白」ヨブは感情に流されて反論するのではなく、「生ける神にかけて」誓い、「神が自分の正しさを奪ったと感じていても、自分は嘘を語らない」と言い切ります。ある意味で、法廷に立って自己弁明するかのような語り方です。
27:7–12「悪者の話を始めるヨブ」ここで話の流れが変わります。ヨブは突然「悪しき者はどうなるか」という話をし始めます。それは、これまで友人たちが主張してきた神学とほとんど変わらないものです。
27:13–23「友人神学の反復」悪人の最期について述べますが、友人たちの語りに新しい説明が加わるわけではありません。しかしそこが重要なポイントです。つまり「それなら、なぜ自分が苦しむのか」という問いが、より強調されるからです。
4．読みの変遷：どう読まれてきたか
この章は長い間、「悪者は滅びる」という部分が主に取り上げられてきました。それは説教や教訓として分かりやすく、使いやすかったためです。しかしその結果、なぜヨブがあえてこうした友人のことばを整理して語り直しをするのか、その意味付けと文脈全体にある緊張感には、注目されない傾向にありました。
5．本来の文脈に戻ると
しかし、27章が語っていることの中心は、「悪人批判」ではありません。むしろ、友人たちの神学をわざと用いた上で、なお説明できない現実が残ることです。26章で友人たちの神論を受けとめ、さらに広げて語ったあと、途中でむなしさを感じたかのように言葉を詰まらせた場面と似ています。
ヨブは神を否定しているわけではありませんが、神の正しさを単純に説明することもできないのです。そのように「宙ぶらりん」の心を描いているのが、この章の本質と言えるでしょう。
6．現代の読み：今、何が語られているのか
別の言い方をすれば、この状況にあっても自身の問いに誠実であろうとする、ヨブの在り方が示されているのです。信仰がなくても、「納得できない状況でも自分自身に嘘をつかない」その姿には、多くの人が共感できるのではないでしょうか。
7．まとめ：問いを抱えたまま進む
ヨブ記27章は、ヨブの語りが始まったばかりです。そしてヨブは、自分の問いから目を背けません。「正しく生きる意味はあるのか」という疑問に、誠実であり続けようとしています。その姿勢自体に意味があるのでしょう。「意味がない」と嘆かず、自分の問いを大切に持ち続けてもよいと、この章は励ましてくれていると言えるでしょう。では、また続きをお楽しみにしてください。
[Season 6] A Clear and Simple Explanation of Job Chapter 27
1. It Begins with “Reality That Cannot Be Explained”
For example, there are times when someone works seriously, keeps promises, and causes trouble to no one, yet is not valued, faces ongoing problems, and is struck by bad luck without a clear reason. At the same time, it may seem that people who act cleverly move through life without difficulty. We face such unfair realities again and again. We may begin to ask, “Is this just how the world works?” or “Does doing what is right really matter?” Job chapter 27 deals with exactly these kinds of questions.
This is not a problem only for people of faith. When facing events that cannot be explained, how can a person remain honest? That question is at the heart of this chapter.
2. The Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter
Job chapter 27 is placed at a point where the long debate with Job’s friends has, in effect, reached a dead end. As the third round of speeches begins, Zophar falls silent, and the dialogue stops. In that quiet moment, Job begins to speak.
From here on, it is no longer a “debate.” This chapter marks the beginning of Job’s long monologue (chapters 27–31). In these speeches, Job speaks about how he understands his relationship with God.
3. The Structure of the Chapter (Reconstructing How It Was Heard Then)
Let us now look at the content of chapter 27 in order.
27:1–6 “Innocence Spoken as an Oath”
Job does not respond with uncontrolled emotion. Instead, he swears “by the living God” and clearly states that even though he feels God has taken away his justice, he will not speak what is false. His words sound like a defense spoken in a courtroom.
27:7–12 “Job Begins to Speak about the Wicked”
At this point, the flow of the speech changes. Job suddenly begins to talk about what happens to wicked people. What he says is almost the same as the theology his friends have argued until now.
27:13–23 “A Repetition of the Friends’ Theology”
Job describes the final fate of the wicked, but he does not add any new explanation beyond what his friends have already said. That is precisely what matters here. It makes the question, “Then why am I suffering?” stand out even more strongly.
4. How This Chapter Has Been Read Over Time
For a long time, readers have mainly focused on the part that says, “The wicked will be destroyed.” This was easy to use for sermons and moral lessons. As a result, less attention was given to why Job carefully restates his friends’ words and to the tension that exists in the larger context of the book.
5. Returning to the Original Context
When we return to the original context, the main message of chapter 27 is not criticism of the wicked. Rather, Job deliberately uses his friends’ theology, yet an unexplained reality still remains. This situation is similar to the end of chapter 26, where Job accepts and even expands on his friends’ ideas about God, but then seems to fall silent, as if feeling the emptiness of those words.
Job is not denying God, but he also cannot give a simple explanation for God’s justice. This “suspended” state of mind is the true heart of this chapter.
6. A Contemporary Reading: What Is Being Said Today
In other words, this chapter shows Job’s way of life as he tries to remain faithful to his own questions, even in a situation he cannot accept. Even without faith, many people can relate to this姿勢 of “not lying to oneself, even when things do not make sense.”
7. Conclusion: Moving Forward While Holding the Question
Job chapter 27 is only the beginning of Job’s long speech. Job refuses to turn away from his own questions. He continues to face the doubt, “Is there meaning in living rightly?” Remaining honest to that question may itself have meaning.
