1．何かズレてしまう答え
誰かが深く落ち込んでいるとき、「世の中そんなに甘くないよ」や「人生ってそういうものだよね」といった正論だけを返された経験はありませんか。確かに言っていることは間違っていませんが、なぜか的外れに感じられ、会話がうまくかみ合わないことがあります。こうした答えは、かえって話す前よりも孤独に感じさせてしまうことがあります。ヨブ記25章は、まさにそのような場面を描いています。
言っている内容は正しいものの、それが苦しむ人の問いに真っ直ぐ向き合っていません。この章は、人の心に触れる対話について考えさせてくれる章です。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
ヨブ記25章は、三人の友人たちとの第三ラウンドの討論に位置づけられます。これまでエリファズ、ビルダデ、ツォファルが順番に発言してきましたが、この第三ラウンドではツォファルが沈黙し、ビルダデの発言もわずか6節で終わります。議論は収束したわけではなく、行き詰まりを迎えました。これが、この章の文学的な特徴です。
続く26章では、ヨブ自身が神の偉大さについて語ります。つまり25章において大切なのは、ビルダデの言葉に沿って「神の偉大さ」を考えることではなく、ヨブとビルダデの関わりを考えることです。
3．本章の構造
では、この章の流れを見ていきましょう。
25:1–3「天を支配する圧倒的な神」ビルダデは最初に、神の側から話を始めます。神には絶対的な支配と威光があり、天の軍勢は数えきれません。その光はすべてに行き渡っています。聞き手は、神の圧倒的な存在感を前に圧倒される感覚を受けます。
25:4–5「神の前に立てない人間」次に、ビルダデは問いを投げかけます。「どうして人が神の前で正しくいられるのか」。月でさえ輝かず、星でさえ清くありません。ここでは、基準が完全に神の側に置かれています。
25:6「到達点――人間は虫にすぎない」そして最後に、人間は「うじ」や「虫」と例えられます。 議論はここに至り、神と人間の間には埋められない隔たりがあるというのがビルダデの結論です。
4．読みの変遷
歴史的には、この章はしばしば「人間の謙遜を教える言葉」として読まれてきました。特に25章4節や6節は文脈から切り離されて、人の罪深さを強調する説教などで使われることが多かったのです。これは、神の偉大さを守ろうとする解釈でした。つまり「これは苦しむヨブに向けられた言葉である」という本章の文脈に基づいた読み方が、あまり十分ではなかったのです。
5．本来の文脈での重心
内容をきちんと読むと、この章の中心は「人間は小さい」という主張自体ではありません。ポイントは、たとえ正しい神学を語っていても、それが必ずしも答えにならない、という点です。ビルダデの言葉自体に誤りはありませんが、ヨブの問い――「なぜ正しい人が苦しむのか」には全く触れられていません。この章は、正しい神学と、心が通い合わない対話の断絶を、はっきりと対比して描いているのです。
6．本来の読み
このような文脈に注目して読むと、ヨブ記25章は、信仰の有無に関係なく誰もが直面する普遍的な問いを提示しています。つまり、私たちもまた、正しい説明をしようとして、結果的に相手を黙らせてしまうことがあります。相手の問いを無視した的外れな応答をし、気づかずにいるということがあるのです。
この章は、「正しいことを言っているのに伝わらない」背景には、相手の心に寄り添わない話し方があると教えています。その戸惑いやもどかしさは、多くの人が経験している感覚です。
7．補足
ここまで読んで、「これは心理学でも指摘されていることではないか」と感じる人もいるでしょう。確かにヨブ記25章は、会話がかみ合わないという普遍的な出来事を、神の超越性をめぐる神学的対話という形ではっきりと描き出しています。
この章は、正しい神学を語れるかどうかよりも、それが相手の問いに本当に応答しているかを問いかけています。そのように読むことで、私たちは自分の語り方や聞き方を振り返り、新たに考えるきっかけになるかもしれません。ではまた明日。
[Season 6] Job Chapter 25 Explained Simply — When Correct Words Are Not an Answer
1. Answers That Feel Slightly Off
When someone is deeply sad, have you ever heard replies like, “Life is not that easy,” or “That’s just how life is”?
These words are not wrong. However, they often feel off, and the conversation does not connect well. Sometimes such answers make the person feel even more lonely than before they spoke. Job chapter 25 shows a scene like this.
What is said is correct, but it does not face the question of the suffering person directly. This chapter makes us think about dialogue that truly touches the human heart.
2. Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter
Job chapter 25 belongs to the third round of discussions between Job and his three friends. So far, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar have spoken in turn. In this third round, however, Zophar remains silent, and Bildad’s speech ends in only six verses. The discussion does not reach a conclusion but comes to a dead end. This is an important literary feature of this chapter.
In the next chapter, chapter 26, Job himself speaks about the greatness of God. This means that the key point of chapter 25 is not simply to think about “God’s greatness” through Bildad’s words, but to reflect on the relationship between Job and Bildad.
3. Structure of This Chapter
Let us look at the flow of the chapter.
25:1–3 “The Overwhelming God Who Rules Heaven”
Bildad begins by speaking from God’s side. God has absolute rule and fearful majesty. The heavenly hosts are beyond counting, and God’s light reaches everything. The listener feels overwhelmed by God’s powerful presence.
25:4–5 “Human Beings Who Cannot Stand Before God”
Next, Bildad asks a question: “How can a human be righteous before God?” Even the moon is not bright, and the stars are not pure. The standard is placed completely on God’s side.
25:6 “The Final Point — Humans Are Only Worms”
Finally, humans are compared to maggots and worms. The argument reaches its end here. Bildad’s conclusion is that there is an unbridgeable gap between God and human beings.
4. History of Interpretation
Historically, this chapter has often been read as a teaching about human humility. Verses like 25:4 and 25:6 were often taken out of context and used in sermons to stress human sinfulness. This reading tried to protect the greatness of God. As a result, the fact that these words are spoken to a suffering Job was not always taken seriously enough.
5. The True Center in Its Original Context
When we read carefully, the center of this chapter is not simply the claim that “humans are small.” The key point is that even correct theology does not always become an answer. Bildad’s words are not wrong, but they do not touch Job’s question at all: “Why do righteous people suffer?” This chapter clearly shows the contrast between correct theology and a dialogue where hearts do not truly connect.
6. Reading This Chapter Today
When we read with attention to this context, Job chapter 25 presents a universal question that anyone can face, with or without faith. We also try to give correct explanations, but in doing so, we may silence the other person. We may give responses that miss the real question without noticing it.
This chapter teaches that behind the experience of “saying the right thing but not being understood,” there is often a way of speaking that does not truly stay close to the other person’s heart. This feeling of confusion and frustration is something many people have experienced.
7. Additional Note
Some readers may think, “Isn’t this the same thing that psychology talks about?” Indeed, Job chapter 25 clearly shows a common human experience of conversations that do not connect, using a theological dialogue about the greatness of God.
This chapter asks not whether we can speak correct theology, but whether our words truly respond to the other person’s question. Reading it this way may give us a chance to look again at how we speak and how we listen. See you tomorrow.
