「既読がつかない」スマホを手に、相手からの返事を待ちながら戸惑ったことはありませんか。必ず返事が来るはずなのに、「せめてスタンプだけでも」と思った経験はないでしょうか。ヨブ記23章は、まさにこのもどかしさを神に向けて語っています。「神は正しい方だと信じているのに、どうして沈黙されるのか？」という問いをヨブが投げかけているのです。
2．歴史的・文学的文脈：
前の章では、エリファズがヨブに対して厳しい非難を浴びせました。ヨブが弱い者を苦しめ、財産を奪い、陰で悪事を働いたと断定したのです。しかしそれらには、何も根拠がありませんでした。23章に入ると、ヨブはその訴えに正面から反論することをやめます。形式上は友人たちに語りかけているように見えても、その言葉はすでに神ご自身に向いているのです。この章のヨブの語りは、議論ではなく神の前での静かな独白として始まります。そして、その語り口は印象的なほど落ち着いています。
3．本章の構造
それでは、ヨブの語りに耳を傾けていきましょう。
23:1–7「神の法廷に立ちたい」ヨブは、自分の訴えを神の前できちんと話し、正しく裁いてもらいたいと願っています。力で押さえつけられるのではなく、公平に話を聞いてもらえると確信しているからです。だからこそ、神と直接向き合える場を切望するのです。
23:8–12「探しても神はいない」しかし、場面は急に変わります。ヨブは東や西、南や北へと神を探しますが、どこにも見当たりません。神の言葉を大事にして生きてきたのに、肝心の神は黙り、姿を隠したままです。たしかな信頼があるのに、何の手ごたえも得られません。
23:13–17「決めたことは変わらない。それが怖い」さらに語りの調子が変わります。神はご自身の決意に従い、それを遂げられるお方です。ヨブが恐れるのは、神の気まぐれではありません。正しい神が理由を告げないまま決められたことを実行する、そのわからなさが恐ろしいのです。このように、23章は希望と恐れが入り混じった状態にたどり着きます。
4．読みの変遷
歴史的には、23:10「神は私の道をご存じだ」という言葉だけが「励ましの名句」として抜き出され、「試練の中でも大丈夫だ」と解釈されてきました。短く覚えやすく、慰めのことばとして広がったためです。しかし、その一方で「その神が今は見えない」という章全体の痛みや、後半にある恐れの感情が見落とされがちでした。
5．本来の文脈
この章の中心は、10節ではありません。その前の8、9節、「正しい神が沈黙し、隠れておられるのはなぜか」という問いかけにあります。神を信頼し、法廷に出れば話し合えると考えていたヨブが、現実には神の不在にぶつかり、最後は「理由のわからない神の力」の前で言葉を失いかける——ここにこの章の緊張感の核心があります。
6．現代の読み
背景をふまえて読むと、23章も決して「答え」を用意しているわけではありません。「答えが得られない時間を、どう過ごすか」を表現している章だといえます。信仰を持っている人は、祈っても神から何の返答も感じられない夜を経験することがあるでしょう。これは、信仰がなくても、正しいと思ったはずの仕組みがうまく働かない理不尽な状況に閉じ込められる気持ちと似ています。そうしたなかでもヨブは、神のお人柄を信じ、「神を探し続けること」をやめません。沈黙のなかでも語り続け、神との深い絆を感じられなくなっても、神を慕い探し続けるヨブの姿には強い印象を受けます。

【Season6】 Job Chapter 23 Explained in Simple Words
Have you ever held your phone and felt confused while waiting for a reply, when the message stays “seen” but there is no answer? You feel sure a reply should come, and you even think, “At least send a sticker.” Job 23 speaks to this same frustration, but Job directs it to God. Job asks, “If I believe God is righteous, why does God stay silent?”
In the previous chapter, Eliphaz attacked Job with harsh blame. He claimed that Job hurt weak people, took their property, and did evil things in secret. But he had no real proof. When chapter 23 begins, Job stops trying to answer the accusation directly. Even if his words sound like he is speaking to his friends, his true audience is already God. Job’s speech here is not a debate. It begins as a quiet monologue before God, and his tone is surprisingly calm.
Now, let us listen to Job’s words.
23:1–7 “I want to stand in God’s court.” Job wants to present his case to God and ask for a fair judgment. He believes God will not crush him by force. He believes God will listen in a just way. That is why he longs to face God directly.
23:8–12 “I look for God, but God is not there.” Then the scene suddenly changes. Job searches east and west, south and north, but he cannot find God anywhere. Job has lived by God’s words, but the God he depends on is silent and hidden. Job has real trust, but he feels no response at all.
23:13–17 “God’s decision will not change, and that frightens me.” The tone shifts again. God acts according to God’s own decision and carries it out. Job is not afraid of God’s mood. He is afraid because the righteous God does not explain the reason, yet still does what has been decided. This is why chapter 23 ends in a place where hope and fear are mixed together.
Over time, many readers have taken only Job 23:10, “God knows my way,” as a famous line of encouragement, and they read it as, “Even in suffering, things will be fine.” It is short, easy to remember, and it spreads well as a comforting phrase. But when people read it this way, they may overlook the pain of the whole chapter: “That God cannot be seen right now,” and also the fear that appears in the later verses.
The center of this chapter is not verse 10. It is in verses 8 and 9, where Job asks, “Why is the righteous God silent and hidden?” Job trusted God and thought that, if he could enter God’s court, he could speak and be understood. But in reality, Job hits the wall of God’s absence. In the end, he almost loses words before “God’s power that he cannot understand.” That is the core tension of this chapter.
When we read chapter 23 with this background, we see that it does not offer an easy “answer.” It describes how to live through a time when no answer comes. People of faith may have nights when they pray but feel no reply from God. Even without faith, this can feel like being trapped in a situation where a system that should be fair does not work. Even then, Job does not stop searching. He trusts God’s character and keeps looking for God. Even when he can no longer feel a close bond, he still longs for God and continues to seek God. Job’s姿 leaves a strong impression.
What Job feels is not a charge that “God is cruel.” It is closer to awe and trembling: “I cannot understand why the righteous One is silent.” It is like the shaking heart of someone holding a phone with no reply and waiting.
