「インフラ」や「安全対策」といった働き――たとえば道路や堤防、街灯の設置など――は人目につきにくいものですが、実は町を守るうえで欠かせない大切な仕事です。聖書の中にも、このように目立たない部分を地道に整えていった王がいます。それがヨタムです。今回は歴代誌第二27章から、「見えないところを整える強さ」について一緒に考えていきます。
2．本章の背景：父の過ちのあとに登場した節度ある王
ヨタムは父ウジヤのあとを継ぎ、ユダ南王国の王となりました。聖書には「彼の神、主の前に、自分の道を確かなものとした」（6節）と記されており、ヨタムが神とのかかわりを何よりも大切にしたことが強調されています。
3．本章の流れ：五つの意味段落で読み解く
本書の構造は、次のとおりです。
27:1–2「即位と評価」：ヨタムは父を手本に正しい歩みをしましたが、「主の宮には入らなかった」とあります。彼はあくまで王の役割に徹したのです。一方で、「民は依然として滅びに向かっていた」（2節）とあるように、ユダ南王国には偶像崇拝や正義の軽視が広がり続けていました。
27:3–4「礼拝環境の整備」：ヨタムは神殿の上の門やオフェルの城壁、山地にある町や森の塔など、礼拝共同体が安心して集える外枠を整備・強化しました。
27:5「外交の安定」：ヨタムはアンモンに勝利し、三年間貢納を受けます。内政だけでなく、外国との関係もうまく安定させたのです。
27:6「ヨタム王のまとめ」：ヨタムは「主の前に自分の道を確かなものとした」ため、国も強くされたとまとめられています。ここには明確な論理があります。
27:7–9「結び」：ヨタムは亡くなり、葬られ、次の王アハズの時代へと引き継がれます。これは歴代誌でよく見られる締めくくり方です。
4．最初の読者へのメッセージ：三つのポイント
この物語を最初に読んだのは、バビロン捕囚から帰還した人々でした。彼らがこの話から学んだことは三つありました。第一に、ヨタム王が示した「主の前に自分の道を確かなものとする」という姿勢です。
第二に、国を立て直すには王一人の力だけでなく、預言者や祭司、さらには「民」一人一人の役割が重要だということです。イザヤ書1章6節では「足の裏から頭まで健全なところはない」と描写されていますが、リーダーだけでなく、共同体の皆が心から悔い改め、正しい信仰に生きる必要がありました。王も民も力をあわせて再建しなくてはなりません。
5．現代への霊的メッセージ：今日できる三つのステップ
こうした教訓は、現代を生きる私たちにも通じます。
「王が正しければそれでいい」という発想ではなく、民一人一人が神の前で誠実に歩むことの大切さは、今の教会や地域にもあてはまる教えです。指導者だけでなく、信徒一人一人も、自分の責任として神の前に向き合い、誠実に生きることが求められています。
現代社会は、クリスチャンや信仰者にとって必ずしも優しい環境ではありませんが、それでも私たちは「地の塩」「世の光」として歩むことを選べます。ヨタムの短い治世は、「善生は長生にまさる」というクリスチャン指導者・山室軍平の言葉をまさに体現しています。人生の長さよりも、その生き方の中身こそが大切だ、という視点です。27章6節にある「彼の神、主の前に、自分の道を確かなものとした」。そのような生き方が祝福されると信じて、今日もできる一歩から始めてみましょう。ではまた明日お会いしましょう。
Season 6: 2 Chronicles 27 – Jotham: The Strength to Build What Is Unseen
1. The Work of Protecting a City Is Not Flashy
Jobs like “infrastructure” or “safety measures”—for example, roads, levees, and streetlights—are not very visible. But they are essential for protecting a city. In the Bible, there was a king who worked hard on these unseen things. His name was Jotham. Today, from 2 Chronicles 27, let’s think about “the strength to build what is unseen.”
2. Background: A Moderate King After His Father’s Mistake
Jotham became king of Judah after his father Uzziah. The Bible says, “He ordered his ways before the Lord his God” (verse 6). This shows that Jotham valued his relationship with God above all.
3. The Flow of This Chapter: Five Sections
The structure is:
- 27:1–2 “Accession and Evaluation”: Jotham walked rightly like his father, but “he did not enter the temple of the Lord.” He focused on his role as king. Yet, “the people still acted corruptly” (verse 2). Idolatry and injustice continued in Judah.
- 27:3–4 “Building Worship Spaces”: Jotham strengthened the temple gate, the wall of Ophel, towns in the hills, and towers in the forests—so the worship community could gather safely.
- 27:5 “Diplomatic Stability”: Jotham defeated Ammon and received tribute for three years. He managed both domestic and foreign affairs well.
- 27:6 “Summary of Jotham’s Reign”: Because Jotham “ordered his ways before the Lord,” the nation became strong. There is clear logic here.
- 27:7–9 “Conclusion”: Jotham died, was buried, and the next king Ahaz took over. This is a common ending in Chronicles.
4. Message for the First Readers: Three Points
The first readers were people who returned from Babylonian exile. They learned three things:
- Jotham’s attitude of “ordering his ways before the Lord.”
- Rebuilding a nation needs not only the king but also prophets, priests, and every person. Isaiah 1:6 says, “From the sole of the foot to the head there is no soundness.” Everyone needed true repentance and faith.
- Both leaders and people must work together for restoration.
5. Spiritual Message for Today: Three Steps We Can Take
This lesson applies today. It is not enough to think, “If the leader is right, everything is fine.” Each believer must walk honestly before God. In today’s world, it is not always easy for Christians. But we can still choose to live as “salt of the earth” and “light of the world.” Jotham’s short reign shows what Christian leader Gunpei Yamamuro said: “A good life is better than a long life.” What matters is not length but quality. Verse 6 says, “He ordered his ways before the Lord his God.” Such a life is blessed. Let’s start with one step today. See you tomorrow!
