部屋の片付けをしていて、懐かしい本を見つけた経験はありませんか。その本を手に取って読み返すと、以前感じた感動がよみがえることがあるでしょう。歴代誌第二34章は、まさにこのような「再発見」の物語です。ヨシヤ王は神殿の修復作業中に「主の律法の書」を見つけます（34:14）。王はその言葉を聞き、読んだことで、そこに書かれている内容に深く心を動かされ、衣を裂くほど驚きました（34:19）。今回は、この出来事から何が起こったのかに注目しながら、心の糧を得ていきましょう。
2．本章の位置づけと構造の概説
まずいつものように本章の位置づけと概要を見てまいりましょう。
歴代誌は、捕囚後の民に礼拝を立て直すように、勧める書です。34章もその重要な視点を教えます。流れは明快です。
34:1–2ヨシヤ王の 即位と評価――ヨシヤ王は父ダビデの道を歩みました。
34:3–7ヨシヤ王の宗教改革、 偶像の徹底撤去――ヨシヤは、治世の8年目、まだ若い王でしたが、イスラエルから徹底して、高き所やアシェラ像、そして異教の祭壇を砕き、取り除きました。
34:8–13 神殿の修繕―ヨシヤ王は、伝統的な神礼拝を再開させるため、神殿を工事する者に費用を渡し、現場の監督も含めてレビ人に責任を持たせました。
34:14–18 律法の書の発見――その時、ヒルキヤが律法の書を見つけ、シャファンが王の前でそれを朗読しました。王はこの熱心な改革によっても、イスラエルに定められた神の裁きが取り去られないことを知ります。
34:19–28 悔い改めとフルダの預言―しかし、神は預言者フルダを遣わし、神の裁きは取り去られないものの、わざわいから王が守られることを約束します。
34:29–33 契約の更新――イスラエルの運命は変えられない。けれども、王は宗教改革をさらに徹底させます。民の前で聖書を読み、主に契約を誓い、従わせるのです。
ここには一つ一つの順序があります。「求める→きよめる→修繕する→読む→契約する」。神との関係を正し、決意を整え、神に従う歩みを推し進めるために、ヨシヤ王は徹底的に取り組みました。
3．最初の読者へのメッセージ
次に、当時の読者がこの出来事をどう受け止めたのか考えてみましょう。最初の読者は、神殿を建て直した後の人々でした。それは全く新しい出発ではありません。過去の大きな負の遺産を抱え、イスラエルの過去の積み重ねによる未来の結果も変えられませんでした。それでも、彼らは前を向き、神の前に正しく歩もうと努力し続けました。彼らは、先行きが見えないイスラエル再建の事業に取り組み、過去の不従順を思い起こし、神の祝福にも不安を抱きながら、それでも神を信頼して進み続けた。そのエピソードが、捕囚から戻った人々の大きな支えとなったのです。
4．現代の私たちへの霊的なススメ
私たちの身の回りで起こることや、歴史の流れは変えられないことが多いでしょう。しかし、自分の心の在り方は変えることができるはずです。そして神は、その小さな変化にも目を留め、あなたの志をしっかり守ってくださると語られています。たとえ国の情勢が不安定でも、社会や教会、家族に問題が起こったとしても、あなたが神の御言葉に真剣に向き合い、心から受け止めるなら、神はしっかりあなたの人生を守ってくださることでしょう。
信仰を持つとは、このような生き方のことを指しているのだと思います。それは、「私の家はキリスト教です」と言うことや、「聖書は持っています」「教会に通っています」と語るだけではありません。本当に神の言葉に心を向けて、自分自身の人生を磨くように歩んでいくことです。たとえ時代や社会の流れが思わしくなくても、動じることなく神との関係を大切にして、自分自身が輝くように生きていく。神は、砕けた心からもう一度、壊れた教会や地域社会の歩みを回復されるのです。では、また明日お会いしましょう。
【Season 6】2 Chronicles 34 — Josiah’s Religious Reforms
Have you ever found an old book while cleaning your room? When you take it in your hands and read it again, the feelings you once had may come back to you.
Second Chronicles 34 is a story of this kind of “rediscovery.”
King Josiah found “the Book of the Law of the Lord” during the repair of the temple (34:14).
When Josiah heard the words and read them, he was deeply moved. He tore his clothes because he was shocked by what was written (34:19).
Today, let us look at what happened after this, and receive food for our hearts.
2. The Place of This Chapter and Its Structure
As always, let us first see the place and outline of this chapter.
Chronicles encourages the people who returned from exile to rebuild true worship.
Chapter 34 also teaches this important viewpoint.
The flow is clear.
34:1–2 – Josiah becomes king and is evaluated.
Josiah walked in the ways of his father David.
34:3–7 – Josiah’s reform and removal of idols.
In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, Josiah removed the high places, the Asherah poles, and all foreign altars from Israel.
34:8–13 – Repairing the temple.
Josiah gave money to the workers to repair the temple. He also gave the Levites responsibility as supervisors.
34:14–18 – Finding the Book of the Law.
At that time Hilkiah found the Book of the Law, and Shaphan read it before the king.
Josiah learned that even with his reforms, God’s judgment on Israel would not be taken away.
34:19–28 – Repentance and the prophecy of Huldah.
God sent the prophet Huldah. She said that God’s judgment would not be removed, but that the king would be protected from disaster.
34:29–33 – Renewing the covenant.
Israel’s destiny would not change. Yet the king continued the reform.
He read the Scriptures before the people, made a covenant before the Lord, and led the people to obey Him.
There is a clear order here: “Seek → Purify → Repair → Read → Make a covenant.”
Josiah worked with all his strength to restore his relationship with God, to set his decision, and to walk in obedience.
3. The Message for the First Readers
Let us think how the first readers understood this story.
They were people who rebuilt the temple after the exile.
It was not a completely new start. They carried the heavy failures of the past.
The results of Israel’s long disobedience could not be changed.
Even so, they looked forward and tried to walk rightly before God.
They worked in rebuilding Israel even when the future was unclear.
They remembered Israel’s disobedience and sometimes felt unsure about God’s blessing.
Still, they trusted God and continued.
This story became a deep encouragement for the people who had returned from exile.
4. Spiritual Encouragement for Us Today
We cannot change many things around us—our society, our country, and the flow of history.
But we can change the attitude of our hearts.
And the Bible tells us that God sees even that small change and protects your desire to follow Him.
Even if the world feels unstable, or if problems arise in society, in the church, or in your family—
if you turn to God’s Word with honesty and accept it in your heart,
God will surely keep your life.
This is what it means to have faith.
It is more than saying, “My family is Christian,”
or “I own a Bible,”
or “I attend church.”
It means truly facing God’s Word and shaping your life by it.
Even if the times or society move in a difficult direction,
we do not lose heart.
We value our relationship with God and live in a way that shines.
God brings renewal to broken churches and communities through people whose hearts are humble before Him.
