1．心を折られない
私たちが何か新しいことを始めると、「そんなの無理だよ」と周囲から笑われたり、冷たくあしらわれたりすることがあります。とくに厄介なのは、実際の妨害よりも先に心が折れてしまうことです。教会の働きや家庭、職場でも、始めた途端に冷笑や逆風が起き、「これは神の御業のはずなのに、なぜうまく進まないのだろう」と立ち尽くす瞬間が訪れます。ネヘミヤ記4章は、そうした理想論では済まされない現実を、そのままの重さで描いています。
2．本章の位置づけと構造概説
この章は、城壁の再建が本格的にスタートした直後の出来事を描いています。つまり、うまくいきそうだと思った矢先、一気に攻撃が強まる場面です。まず4:1–5は「嘲りと祈り」。ネヘミヤたちは着実に城壁工事を進めますが、敵はそれを見て嘲り、さらに脅しや陰謀で妨害を仕掛けます。ネヘミヤはその状況を神に訴えます。続く4:6は「工事の前進」。困難の中でも工事が進んだことが簡潔に記されています。4:7–9は「敵の連携と、祈り・見張りの対抗」。敵の攻撃が激化する一方で、ネヘミヤたちも団結し、祈りと警戒で応戦します。4:10–12では「内側の疲労と不安」が描かれ、妨害や非難が続くなかで心が疲れてしまい、ついに弱音も出てしまいます。そして4:13–14は「再配置と励まし」です。ネヘミヤは体制を見直して人々を励まし、恐れの中で再び前を向かせます。最後の4:15–23は「働きながら守りを固める体制」。彼らは片手に武器、片手に作業をしながら、持久戦を戦い抜いたことが語られます。
3．最初の読者へのメッセージ
この物語が編集され、記録としてまとめられた時点で、出来事を実際に体験した人も、次世代の子どもたちも一緒に読んでいたと考えられます。編纂時には、共同体が「これは私たちの歴史であり、神のなされた御業である」と理解できるよう意図されていました。
周囲の力は強く、自分たちは弱い。資源や人手も足りず、反対者もいます。そのため、彼らは「荷を担ぐ者の力は弱り…私たちにはできない」と言い出したくなったはずです（4:10）。ここで聖書が伝えているのは、「信仰があれば弱音を吐かない」という理想ではありません。むしろ、神の民であっても弱る現実を隠さず、そのうえで進むべき道を示しています。ネヘミヤは人々に「彼らを恐れてはならない。大いなる恐るべき主を覚えよ」（4:14）と伝えました。恐れを感じること自体が悪いのではなく、その恐れによって主を見失うことが問題なのです。だからネヘミヤは祈りながら神に頼り、見張りを置き、体制も柔軟に変え、合図まで整えて備えました。信仰とは、神にすべてを任せて何もしないことではなく、神に委ねるからこそ今できる備えを具体的に行うことだと、当時の読者は学びを共有したのです。
4．現代の私たちへの霊的なススメ
この章が今の私たちに語りかけるメッセージはとてもはっきりしています。ネヘミヤたちが困難をどのように乗り越えたのかを学びましょう。「信仰を持てばすべてうまくいく」という考え方は間違いです。信仰者であり、神に愛されていても、困難にぶつかり、どうにもできない状況や心が折れそうになることがあります。
たとえば、日本の教会開拓を見ていると、大きな成長を遂げる教会はほんの一部で、ほとんどの教会が「がれきの山」を片付けるような報われない努力をくり返しています。神から与えられた働きであっても、思い通りにいかず苦しみや無力感に直面することが多いものです。そのとき、「自分の力不足のせいだ」と自己否定に陥ることもあるかもしれませんが、そうではありません。
天でネヘミヤと共に微笑み合える人は、困難な中でも神を信頼して歩んだ人だと私は思います。苦しみの中にある教会を、能力ややり方で責めたり見捨てたりせず、その教会のそばに立ち、ともに歩んだ人々です。
ネヘミヤ記4章は、信仰を持つ人でも困難に直面し、心が弱る現実を隠しません。「荷を担ぐ者の力は弱り…私たちにはできない」（4:10）という言葉が、それをはっきりと示しています。
しかし、ネヘミヤは弱さを責めたのではなく、人々の視線を変えさせました。「彼らを恐れてはならない。大いなる恐るべき主を覚えよ」（4:14）。大切なのは、恐れそのものではなく、恐れにとらわれて神を見失うことだと教えているのです。
そして、彼らの信仰は、祈りだけでも、備えだけでもありませんでした。祈りながら見張りを置き（4:9）、働きながら守る体制を整えました（4:16–23）。信仰とは、神に委ねて何もしないことではなく、神に委ねるからこそ、共同体として具体的に備えることなのです。
だから私たちも、妨害や辱めの中で自分を責めて落ち込むのではなく、「私たちの神が私たちのために戦ってくださる」（4:20）という約束に立ち、たとえ小さなものであっても礼拝や祈りの場を整え、与えられた役割を一歩ずつ進め続けていきましょう。では、また明日お会いしましょう。©Dr. Makoto
Season 6: Easy Explanation of Nehemiah Chapter 4 — Laughing with Nehemiah in Heaven
1. Do Not Let Your Heart Break
When we start something new, people may laugh and say, “That’s impossible.” Some people may treat us coldly. What is even harder is this: our heart breaks before real trouble begins. In church work, in the family, or at work, we may face mockery and strong headwinds right after we start. Then we may stop and think, “This should be God’s work, so why is it not going well?” Nehemiah chapter 4 shows this kind of reality. It does not make it light. It shows it with its full weight.
2. Where This Chapter Fits and Its Structure
This chapter tells what happened right after the wall rebuilding really started. In other words, just when people thought it might go well, the attacks became strong.
First, 4:1–5 is “Mockery and Prayer.” Nehemiah’s people keep building the wall step by step, but their enemies mock them and then try to stop them with threats and plots. Nehemiah brings that situation to God in prayer.
Next, 4:6 is “Progress of the Work.” It says in a short way that the work moved forward even in hard times.
Then 4:7–9 is “Enemies Join Together, and Prayer plus Watch.” The enemy pressure grows, but Nehemiah’s people unite, and they respond with prayer and careful guarding.
In 4:10–12, we see “Inner Tiredness and Anxiety.” Because the attacks and criticism continue, people become tired in their hearts, and they finally speak words of weakness.
After that, 4:13–14 is “New Arrangement and Encouragement.” Nehemiah reviews the plan and encourages the people, so they can look forward again in fear.
Finally, 4:15–23 is “A System to Work While Guarding.” They work with one hand and hold weapons with the other. They endure like this and fight a long battle.
3. The Message to the First Readers
At the time when this story was edited and written down, it is likely that people who experienced the events and the next generation of children read it together. The editors wanted the community to understand, “This is our history, and this is what God has done.”
The people around them were strong, and they were weak. They did not have enough resources or workers, and they also had people who opposed them. So they must have wanted to say, “The strength of the burden bearers is failing… we cannot rebuild” (4:10).
The Bible is not teaching an ideal like, “If you have faith, you never say weak words.” Instead, it does not hide the reality that even God’s people can become weak. And then it shows the way forward.
Nehemiah told the people, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord who is great and awesome” (4:14). Fear itself is not the main problem. The problem is when fear makes us lose sight of the Lord. That is why Nehemiah trusted God while praying, set guards, changed the plan in a flexible way, and even prepared signals. The first readers shared this lesson: faith is not doing nothing because we “leave it to God.” Faith is doing real preparation because we trust God.
4. A Spiritual Encouragement for Us Today
This chapter speaks to us today in a very clear way. We should learn how Nehemiah’s people got through their hard time. The idea “If you have faith, everything will go well” is wrong. Even believers, even people loved by God, can face trouble. We can face situations we cannot fix. Our hearts can also feel close to breaking.
For example, when we look at church planting in Japan, only a small number of churches grow in a big way. Most churches repeat hard work that feels unrewarding, like clearing a “mountain of rubble.” Even if the work is given by God, it often does not go the way we want. We can face pain and a sense of powerlessness. At that time, some people may fall into self-denial and think, “It is because I lack ability.” But it is not that simple.
I think that a person who can smile with Nehemiah in heaven is someone who kept trusting God and kept walking even in trouble. Such a person does not blame or abandon a church in pain by judging its ability or methods. Such a person stands beside that church and walks together.
Nehemiah chapter 4 does not hide the reality that believers can become weak in hard times. The words “The strength of the burden bearers is failing… we cannot” (4:10) show this clearly.
But Nehemiah did not blame their weakness. He helped them change their focus. He said, “Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord who is great and awesome” (4:14). The key is not fear itself. The key is losing sight of God because of fear.
Also, their faith was not only prayer, and it was not only preparation. They set guards while praying (4:9), and they built a system to work while guarding (4:16–23). Faith is not doing nothing because we “leave it to God.” Faith is preparing in a real and concrete way as a community because we entrust ourselves to God.
So we also should not fall into self-blame and sink down when we face mockery or shame. We should stand on the promise, “Our God will fight for us” (4:20). Even if it is small, let us prepare places for worship and prayer, and keep moving forward step by step in the role God has given us. See you again tomorrow.
