1．怪しい噂が広まる
職場や社会でも、根拠のない噂が広がると、事実が明らかになる前にさまざまな活動が止まってしまうことがあります。ネヘミヤ記6章の敵も、まさにこの状況を狙っていました（6:9）。彼らは暴力で工事を止めることができないとわかると、新たな方法に切り替えました。しかし、やり方が変わっても、目指すことは同じです。それは工事を中断させることでした。
このような出来事を読むと、時代が変わっても、人がすることはあまり変わらないことがよくわかります。では、ネヘミヤたちがこの問題をどのように乗り越えたのか、一緒に見ていきましょう。
2．本章の位置づけと構造の概説
ネヘミヤ記6章は、城壁再建がいよいよ完成に近づいた場面です。敵は「今しかない」と考え、邪魔を次第に強めていきます。
6:1–4「現場から引き離す呼び出し」――城壁の修復がほぼ完成したため、サンバラテやトビヤ、ゲシェムなどの敵は、会うことを口実にネヘミヤを現場から引き離し、工事を止めさせようとしました。
6:5–9「公開の中傷と恐怖の拡散」――ネヘミヤたちが応じなかったため、敵は今度は「開封の手紙」で反逆の噂を広めようとしました。噂を流して工事を妨害しようとしたのです。ネヘミヤは「どうかわたしを力づけてください」と祈りました。
6:10–14「信仰っぽい助言による罠」――それも失敗すると、今度は買収した預言者にネヘミヤ暗殺計画を伝えさせ、神殿への避難を勧めます。ネヘミヤはそれが神からの言葉ではないと見抜き、「どうか彼らの仕業を覚えていてください」と祈ります。
6:15–16「完成と神の働きの認知」――こうして、ネヘミヤの祈りと神の守りによって、城壁は五十二日で完成します。これを見て周囲も「この働きが神によってなされた」と認めることになりました。
6:17–19「内部に入り込む関係の網」――しかし、敵は遠くにいるだけではありません。近い親族関係を利用した複雑なつながりも描かれます。身近な人間関係が絡むことで、困難がさらにやっかいになることを示しています。
3．最初の読者へのメッセージ
この章を最初に読んだ帰還共同体は、「城壁の再建事業が外からも内からも妨害されつつ完成した」ことを理解したでしょう。つまり城壁再建は、簡単に進んだわけではなく、完成直前までさまざまな巧妙な妨害にさらされたのです。しかし神は、そのたびごとに祈る人の手を強め、正しい判断を与え、共同体を前へ進ませてくださいました。
完成した城壁を前にして、最初の読者が感じたのは「自分たちがすごいことを成し遂げた」という自慢ではなく、神の真実さでした。神は愛をもって民を守り、正しい方法を守るように導かれる、という確信です。神に対する信頼が、さらに深まる出来事だったといえます
4．現代の私たちへの霊的なススメ
これは私たちにとっても、とても大切な普遍的メッセージです。私たちはそれぞれ、神から託された責任を持っています。家庭での役割、教会での奉仕、仕事や学び、誰かを支える祈りなど、さまざまな場面で責任を中断させようとする力が働くことがあるでしょう。また、自分の力では乗り越えられないと思う時や、自分の弱さばかりが目について恐れそうになる時もあると思います。そんな時こそ「今、私を力づけてください」「彼らの仕業を覚えていてください」と何度も祈ることが大切です。神の真実さを信じ、神が本来の目的を進めてくださると心から信じましょう。
また、責任を妨げる力は、はっきりした攻撃や反対だけではありません。シェマヤのように、もっともらしい言葉で納得させようとする場合もあります。しかし、ネヘミヤがシェマヤの提案が偽りであることを見抜き、持ち場を離れなかったように、私たちも常に識別力を働かせることが大切です。パウロも同じことを勧めています（ピリピ1:9）。私たちも健全な判断力を持つ信仰者を目指しましょう。
私たちは困難や誘惑からは退くことも必要ですが、神の導きや使命からは逃げてはいけません。箴言28章1節にも「悪者は追われもしないのに逃げ回るが、神を畏れる人に怖いものはない」とあります。また、ヘブル10章38節には「恐れ退いて滅びる者ではなく、信じていのちを保つ者」と書かれています。確かな信仰と強い心で進むことが、神の祝福と勝利を受ける道となるのです。では、また明日お会いしましょう。
[Season 6] Nehemiah Chapter 6 Explained in an Easy Way: A Heart That Is Not Fooled
1. Strange Rumors Spread
In workplaces and society, when rumors without evidence spread, many activities can stop before the truth becomes clear. The enemies in Nehemiah chapter 6 aimed at exactly this situation (6:9). When they realized they could not stop the work by force, they changed their method. But even when the method changed, the goal was the same: to interrupt the construction.
When we read this, we can see that even if times change, what people do does not change very much. So, let’s look together at how Nehemiah and his people overcame this problem.
2. The Place and Structure of This Chapter
Nehemiah chapter 6 happens when the rebuilding of the wall is very close to completion. The enemies think, “Now is the time,” and they increase their attacks step by step.
6:1–4 “A Call to Pull Him Away from the Site” — Because the repair of the wall was almost finished, enemies such as Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem tried to pull Nehemiah away from the work site, using a meeting as an excuse, and to stop the work.
6:5–9 “Public Slander and the Spread of Fear” — When Nehemiah and his people did not accept the meeting, the enemies used an “open letter” and tried to spread a rumor of rebellion. They tried to disturb the work by spreading rumors. Nehemiah prayed, “Now, please strengthen me.”
6:10–14 “A Trap Using ‘Religious-Sounding’ Advice” — When that also failed, they had a prophet they had bribed tell Nehemiah about an assassination plan and recommend that he take shelter in the temple. Nehemiah saw that it was not a word from God, and he prayed, “Please remember what they have done.”
6:15–16 “Completion and the Recognition of God’s Work” — In this way, through Nehemiah’s prayers and God’s protection, the wall was completed in fifty-two days. Seeing this, the people around them admitted, “This work was done by God.”
6:17–19 “A Web of Relationships Inside the Community” — But the enemies were not only far away. The chapter also shows complicated ties that used close family relationships. It teaches that trouble becomes even more difficult when close relationships are involved.
3. The Message for the First Readers
The returning community who first read this chapter likely understood that “the rebuilding of the wall was completed while it was attacked from outside and from inside.” In other words, the rebuilding did not go forward easily. Even right before completion, they faced many clever attacks. But God strengthened the hands of those who prayed each time, gave them the right judgment, and moved the community forward.
When they saw the completed wall, the first readers did not feel proud as if they had done something great. Instead, they saw God’s faithfulness. They gained confidence that God protects His people with love and also leads them to keep the right way. Their trust in God became deeper through this event.
4. A Spiritual Encouragement for Us Today
This is also a very important and universal message for us. Each of us has responsibilities that God has entrusted to us. They can be roles in the family, service in the church, work or study, or prayers to support someone. In many situations, there can be forces that try to interrupt these responsibilities. There are times when we feel we cannot overcome something by our own strength, or when we notice only our weakness and start to fear. At such times, it is important to pray again and again: “Now, please strengthen me,” and “Please remember what they have done.” Let us trust God’s faithfulness and believe from the heart that God will move His true purpose forward.
Also, the forces that interrupt our responsibilities are not only clear attacks or open opposition. Like Shemaiah, they can come with words that sound reasonable and try to convince us. But just as Nehemiah saw that Shemaiah’s suggestion was false and did not leave his place, we also need to keep using discernment. Paul encourages the same thing (Philippians 1:9). Let us aim to become believers with sound judgment.
Sometimes we need to step back from trouble and temptation. But we must not run away from God’s guidance and calling. Proverbs 28:1 says, “The wicked flee when no one is pursuing, but the righteous are bold as a lion.” Hebrews 10:38 also says that we are not those who shrink back, but those who believe and keep life. Going forward with firm faith and a strong heart is the way to receive God’s blessing and victory. See you again tomorrow.
