Chapter 9: The Plowman Catches Up with the Reaper

1. the cursing of God

The first half of chapter 9 is the most terrifying of the visions so far, announcing the pronouncement of judgment (chapters 7-8). First, Amos sees “the Lord standing by the altar. He says that the Lord the Judge has appeared to him. The Lord says, “Knock on the capitals of the pillars so that the thresholds will tremble. In other words, he is talking about a situation in which the temple collapses due to an earthquake and the idolaters are destroyed.

Jehu, who once staged a coup d’etat, deployed 80 guards to kill the prophets and worshipers of the pagan god Baal in the temple (2 Kings 10:25). At that time, not a single person escaped or fled outside. Likewise, the Lord Himself pronounces that He will do so to the worshippers of Israel who have become worshippers of Baal. And since nothing can stop God’s judgment (vv. 2-4), and since God is omnipresent, as David wrote (Psalm 139), there is no one who can escape His hand. What a frightening pronouncement!

How could this happen in the first place? God points out Israel’s sin: verse 7, “Are you not like the Cushites to me?” Israel is supposed to be a covenant people, a people loved by God and living with Him, but it is no longer so. They are no longer a covenant people, no different from the Cushites, the descendants of Ham, who told of the abominations of their father Noah and were cursed (Gen. 9:22; 10:6).

2. God’s Restoration

But God has not abandoned mercy. While His eyes are fixed on the “sinful kingdom,” He is looking for those who will repent there. He will not uproot the house of Jacob” (v. 8) “but will sift the house of Israel.” I will sift the house of Israel, and no pebble shall fall to the ground” (v. 9). In other words, on the Day of Judgment, God will distinguish between dust and pebbles. It is a prophecy that brings to mind Jesus’ words about sorting out the good wheat from the poisonous wheat (Matthew 13:24-30) and the sheep from the goats (25:31-46). God is not saying that everyone is bad, but that those who are to be saved will be saved.

In other words, God’s promises from verse 11 onward are to be understood eschatologically. Here God speaks of the restoration of the Davidic kingdom (vv. 11-12) and the prosperity of that kingdom (vv. 13-15). Isaiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Joel, all of them, the Old Testament prophets repeatedly speak of judgment and at the same time of its restoration. This is because that is what God wants.

Moreover, they do not stop at prophesying the historic return of the captivity and the restoration of the past glory of the Kingdom of Israel, but speak of the eschatological consummation of the new and eternal Kingdom. So in the New Testament, James quotes these words, pointing to our future (Acts 15:16-17). It is not perdition, but endless abundance and blessing in which “the plowman catches up with the reaper (v. 13). This kind of abundance is what everyone dreams of. It can be said that corporations and non-profit organizations are also engaged in various activities with this vision in mind. However, given the current state of our world, where the environment is being destroyed, ethnic conflicts are intensifying, and the rich are becoming the exploiters, many people may take this as an impossibility or a pipe dream.

However, the Bible speaks of the prosperity of the Kingdom of God. Not in Japan, not in America, not in one particular country. It is the prosperity and blessing of those who imitate the humility of Christ and walk in life with God. It is a walk that leads to the new heaven and new earth that will eventually come. It is subtly related to this world. While looking at the current state of our society, it is not futile to tackle environmental issues and ethnic conflicts any longer. This is because it is important that the values and the attitude and efforts for such initiatives be uncomfortable in the eternal Kingdom of God as it is. If human beings are to live and prosper forever, values, attitudes, and efforts, that is where God will appreciate them. I pray that today will be another good day.
