1．ヤコブの葬儀（50:1-14）
ヤコブが神の下に召されました。ヨセフは、ヤコブをミイラにしています。この際に、ミイラ作りの専門家を呼ばずに医者を呼んだのは、ミイラ化にともなう宗教的・呪術的儀式を避けるためであったと考えられています。ヨセフの立場にあってはエジプトの慣例を無視することは難しかったと思われます。しかし死者崇拝に結びつくミイラ化の儀式を避けて、死体保存の実用的な部分のみを施すところに、ヨセフの信仰が物語られているのでしょう。
10節、ヨルダンの向こうの地、とあります。具体的に「ゴレン・ハ・アダデ」という場所がどこかはわかりません。エジプトからイスラエルに北上する通常のルートは、海沿いの道です。しかしその場所が「ヨルダンの川向うにある」（11節）とあると語られているように、彼らは、そのルートではない内陸側の道を通って北上したようです。そして、聖書はその点をはっきりと記載していませんが、ヨルダン川を渡ってマクペラの畑地へ向かったとなれば、後の出エジプトの予行演習をするかのようなルートを通ったということにもなります。
ともあれ、「ゴレン・ハ・アダデ」は、そこで行われたエジプト式の荘厳な葬儀のために、「アベル・ミツライム」と呼ばれるようになりました。そこには言葉遊びがあります。アベルには「嘆く」という意味と同時に「水流」もしくは「草原」の意味があります。そしてミツライムはエジプトを意味します。つまり、約束の地カナンは、エジプトの水流である、ヤコブの子孫を通して潤され、祝されるということです。ヤコブは約束の地に葬られました。
2．兄弟との和解（50:15-21）
さてヨセフの兄弟たちが集まり合って、相談を始めています。ヨセフの仕返しを恐れたのです。しかし、ヨセフは言いました。「恐れることはありません。あなたがたは私に悪を図りましたが、神はそれをよいことのための計らいとなさいました」（20節）。
ヨセフは、昔のヨセフではありませんでした。彼の心の傷は完全に癒されていたのです。その心に復讐心はありません。問題は悪を図った兄たちが、自分たちの過去に責められて、ヨセフを色眼鏡で見、自分たちを守ろうと立ち回ったことでした。罪人の心理がよく現わされているところです。本来は、自分の問題なのに、相手に問題があるかのように振舞うのです。
しかし変えられた罪人はそうではありません。人が救われるというのは、そのような罪性から解放されることです。人がした悪を心に留めないのです（1コリント13:5）。そして、たとえ悪意があるとわかっても、そこに神の御計画があることを覚えて、神に委ねることができます（19、20節、45:5）。ですから、悪事を受け、不法にねじ伏せられると思われる事態になったとしても、神の裁きに任せて（ローマ12:19-21）、静かに物事の成り行きを見ながら、坦々と自分の人生を歩んでいくことができるのです。神は真実なお方です。ですから、悪を行う者に対して、寛大な心を持って対応することもできるようになるのです（21節、ルカ6:27）。「私は、あなたがたも、あなた方の子どもたちも養いましょう」と語るヨセフのごとく、偽りのない、敵を愛する愛に生きることができるのです。
アブラハム以降、イサク、ヤコブ、そしてヨセフと読みとおしながら、それぞれの人生に考えさせられるところがあります。
イサクは、父アブラハムに比べ平凡な人物です。しかし彼は素直に、父アブラハムの祝福の恩恵に与りながら生きた人物です。私たちも、イエスの十字架の恩恵に、素直にあやかって生きる者です。
ヤコブやヨセフは、彼らの性質の問題もさることながら、彼を取り囲む人間の思惑の中で、弄ばれるような人生を生きた人です。しかし、神は彼らの人生を守り、祝されました。彼らの人生の一部に目を留めるなら、それは、祝福された人生とは言い難いものであるかもしれません。しかし、総じて見れば、苦労はあったけれども報われた人生なのです。
どんな人も無駄な人生を生きることはありません。おそらく、これらのすべてを経験しなければ、次の展開が起こらないだけのことです。今の人生は、自分が思うような人生ではないと思うことがあっても、次の展開があると神を信じていくことです。そして、たとえ人の悪意によって自分の人生を台無しにされたと思わされることがあっても、神はそのこともちゃんと計算に入れてくださっていると信じることです。いつでも希望を失わず、人を恐れず、神を恐れて歩みましょう。

Genesis 2: The Death of Jacob and the Death of Joseph
1. Jacob’s Funeral (50:1-4)
Jacob was called to God. Joseph had Jacob mummified. It is believed that Joseph called a doctor instead of a specialist in mummification to avoid the religious and magical rituals that accompanied the mummification. It would have been difficult for Joseph to ignore Egyptian customs in his position. However, Joseph’s faith is evident in the fact that he avoided the ritual of mummification, which is linked to the worship of the dead, and only performed the practical part of preserving the corpse.
Verse 10 says the land beyond the Jordan. We do not know specifically where “Goren ha-Adad” is. The usual route from Egypt to Israel north is along the coast. However, as the place is described as “across the Jordan” (verse 11), it seems that they went north by a different route, an inland route. And, although the Bible does not specify this point, if they crossed the Jordan and headed to the field of Machpelah, it would mean that they took a route that was like a rehearsal for the later Exodus.
Anyway, “Goren ha-Adad” came to be called “Abel Mizraim” because of the Egyptian-style solemn funeral that was held there. There is a play on words here. Abel means “to mourn” and also “stream” or “grassland”. And Mizraim means Egypt. In other words, the Promised Land of Canaan will be watered and blessed through the descendants of Jacob, who are the streams of Egypt. Jacob was buried in the Promised Land.
- Reconciliation with the Brothers (50:15-21)
Now Joseph’s brothers have gathered together and begun to consult together. They fear Joseph’s retaliation. But Joseph answered, “Do not be afraid; for you intended evil against me, but God intended it for good” (verse 20).
Joseph was not the same Joseph he had been before. His wounds had been completely healed. There was no desire for revenge in his heart. The problem was that his brothers, who had intended evil, were blamed for their past, looked at Joseph through negative lenses, and tried to protect themselves. This clearly shows the psychology of a sinner. They act as if the other person is at fault, even though it is actually their own problem.
However, this is not the case for a changed sinner. To be saved is to be freed from such sinfulness. We do not remember the evil that others have done (1 Corinthians 13:5). And even if we know that they have evil intentions, we can remember that there is God’s plan behind it and entrust ourselves to God (verses 19, 20, 45:5). Therefore, even if we are subjected to evil and find ourselves in a situation where we seem to be overwhelmed by iniquity, we can leave it to God’s judgment (Romans 12:19-21), quietly watch how things unfold, and continue living our lives calmly. God is faithful. Therefore, we can also be generous toward those who do evil (verse 21, Luke 6:27). We can live with true love for our enemies, just like Joseph, who said, “I will provide for you and your children.”
As we read through the stories of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph, there are some things that make us think about each of their lives.
Isaac was an ordinary person compared to his father Abraham. However, he was a person who lived an honest life, taking advantage of the blessings of his father Abraham. We too can live by humbly taking advantage of the blessings of Jesus’ cross.
Jacob and Joseph, in addition to their own character problems, were people who lived lives that were toyed with by the intentions of the people around them. However, God protected and blessed their lives. If we look at only a part of their lives, it may not be said that they were blessed. However, looking at the whole picture, although there were hardships, they were rewarded.
No one lives a wasted life. Perhaps if we do not experience all of these things, the next development will not occur. Even if you feel that your life is not what you expected, you should believe in God that there will be a next development. And even if you feel that your life has been ruined by the malice of others, you should believe that God has taken that into account as well. Let us never lose hope, never fear people, and walk in fear of God.
