1．逆境に立たされた時、人はどう選択するのか
みなさんも、人生の大切な場面で「どちらを選ぶべきか」と悩んだことがあるのではないでしょうか。聖書には、そんな選択の重みについて描いた物語がいくつも登場します。今回ご紹介するのは、古代イスラエルの王ダビデと、その息子アブサロムの物語です。
アブサロムは父ダビデに反逆し、王位を奪おうとしました。その際、彼の前には二人の助言者が現れます。一人は冷静な戦略を語るアヒトフェル、もう一人は心に響く言葉で語りかけるフシャイです。この物語は、「本当に正しい選択とは何なのか」や「なぜ人は感情に流されるのか」といった、私たちにも身近な問いを投げかけてくれます。
2．アブサロムと二人の助言者
アブサロムは父を倒すため、まずアヒトフェルに相談しました。アヒトフェルは非常に頭の良い助言者で、「今すぐ攻撃すれば勝てる」と冷静に提案します。その戦略はとても理にかなっていました。
しかし、もう一人の助言者フシャイは少し違いました。彼はダビデの豊富な戦いの経験に触れ、「もっと慎重に進めるべきだ」とすすめます。そして、イスラエル中の兵士を集めて、あなた自身が先頭に立てば、真の王として認められるはずです」と、アブサロムのプライドを大いにくすぐる言葉も添えました。
結局アブサロムは、冷静な戦略よりも、自分の気持ちによりそってくれるフシャイの言葉を選びます。これは私たちが日常でもつい感情に流されてしまう、その典型例かもしれません。
3．選択の結果と物語の結末
フシャイの助言を受け入れたことで、アブサロムは準備に多くの時間をかけることになりました。この間にダビデは逃亡を続け、体勢を整えていきます。さらに、ショビ、マキル、バルジライという裕福な人たちが、荒野で疲れ果てていたダビデの一行に、食べ物や寝具などを届けて助けてくれます。こうした支援もあり、次第に形勢はダビデ側に有利になっていきました。
一方、アヒトフェルは自分の助言が受け入れられなかったことを知り、深い絶望の末に自ら命を絶ってしまいます。自分の知恵が通じなかった現実、そして今後状況が好転しないと見抜いた中で、限界を感じたのかもしれません。この場面は、「どんなに優秀な人でも、全てが思い通りにいくわけではない」と教えてくれます。
4．失敗と赦し：神の憐れみが投げかける希望
この物語の背景には、「神は人間の思惑や計画を覆すことができる」という聖書の大きなメッセージがあります。アブサロムがフシャイの策略に気付けなかったことも、神の計らいによるものとされています。
また、ダビデが逃げ込んだマハナイムという町は、かつて神がヤコブを励ました場所でもありました。神は、過去に失敗したダビデにも再び励ましを与え、やり直す力を与えたのです。神の赦しは完全で、ダビデを何度でも支え続けてくださる存在でした。
「自分には、もう希望がない」と思い悩む人はいませんか？実は、そんな時こそ聖書は「神の憐れみによって、もう一度立ち上がれる」と語っています。使徒パウロも、ダビデの経験を例に挙げ、「人は自分の行いではなく、神の恵みによって救われる」と伝えています。つまり、どんなに過ちがあっても、神の愛は変わらないというのです。
5．現代を生きる私たちへのメッセージ
この物語は、単なる昔話ではありません。人生に迷ったとき、何かに失敗して落ち込んだとき、誰かの言葉に心が揺れたとき、―そんな瞬間こそ聖書のメッセージが心の支えになります。

Samuel 2, Chapter 17: Hushai and Ahithophel—Cool Strategy or Words That Touch the Heart
- How Do People Choose in Hard Times?
Have you ever had to choose between two important things in your life?
The Bible has many stories about the weight of making choices.
Today, let’s look at the story of King David of ancient Israel and his son Absalom.
Absalom rebelled against his father David and tried to take the throne.
At that time, he had two advisors.
One was Ahithophel, who gave cool and logical advice.
The other was Hushai, who spoke words that touched the heart.
This story asks us, “What is the right choice?” and “Why do people follow their feelings?” - Absalom and the Two Advisors
Absalom first asked Ahithophel for advice.
Ahithophel was very smart and said, “Attack now and you will win.”
His plan made sense.
But Hushai was different.
He talked about David’s experience in battle and said, “You should be more careful.”
He also said, “If you gather all the soldiers of Israel and lead them yourself, people will see you as the true king.”
These words made Absalom feel proud.
In the end, Absalom chose Hushai’s words, which matched his feelings, instead of Ahithophel’s cool plan.
This is like how we sometimes follow our emotions in daily life. - The Result of the Choice and the End of the Story
Because Absalom listened to Hushai, he spent a lot of time preparing.
During this time, David kept running away and got ready for battle.
Rich men named Shobi, Makir, and Barzillai helped David and his people in the wilderness by giving them food and beds.
With this help, David’s side became stronger.
Ahithophel, when he saw his advice was not used, felt deep sadness and ended his own life.
He saw that his wisdom was not accepted and that things would not get better.
This shows us that even smart people cannot always get what they want. - Failure and Forgiveness: Hope from God’s Mercy
This story teaches that God can change human plans.
It is said that Absalom did not see Hushai’s trick because of God’s plan.
David ran to a town called Mahanaim, where God once encouraged Jacob.
God gave David new strength, even though he had failed before.
God’s forgiveness is complete, and He supported David again and again.
