1．シンの荒野での食糧難（16:1-3）
イスラエルの民は、シナイ半島を北西へ向かい、シンの荒野へと進みました。そこは、シナイ半島の南西部の砂地、デベット・エル・ラムレであると考えられています。今日でも泉と井戸のそば以外は、緑のまったくない土地です。すでに、第二の月の十五日、エジプトを出て一か月が過ぎていました。携えてきた食糧も底をつき、どこかで食糧を調達しなければなりませんでした。そして食糧が全く見つかる当てもない状況に、イスラエルの民はつぶやきました。「主の手にかかって死んでいたらよかったのに」と。
彼らは、多くの困難な状況に直面しており、その不安からそのようにつぶやかざるを得なかったのでしょう。日中は、じりじり照り付ける太陽のもと、影になる場所もないのです。夜には気温が急激に下がり体力を奪います。そして、広がる岩だらけの地面が続き、乾いた風が容赦なく吹き荒れる荒野です。そこに何十万という食糧に飢えた者たちが立ち尽くしているのです。彼らは、海の道を通って行けばたった２週間でたどり着ける目的地とは、まったく違う方向にも移動していました。そのような状況を考えると、彼らがいかに絶望的で、神の奇跡も全く考えることもできず、ただモーセに引き連れられてきたことを後悔する思いも理解できます。
彼らがモーセと共に、信仰の声を上げることが求められたのは、まさにそのような状況でした。彼らはこれまで神が助けてくださったことを踏まえて、さらに信仰を働かせなくてはなりませんでした。かつてマラの苦い水が飲めず、不満をぶちまけた時に、神がそこに飲める水を用意してくださったこと。そしてエジプト軍に追跡されて追い詰められ、絶体絶命の状況において、神が海の中に道を開き奇跡的に助けてくださったこと。それらを思い起こして、モーセと共に、何もない所で彼らの理解を超えたことをしてくださる神を信頼するように求められたのです。
2．神の解決（16:4-36）
神は不平を漏らしたイスラエルの民にマナとウズラを与えられました。聖書はマナについて、「コエンドロの種のようで、白く、その味は蜜を入れたせんべいのようであった」（16:31）と説明しています。これを科学的に理解するための多くの説がありますが、最も妥当なのは、ぎょうりゅうの木に寄生する昆虫の排泄物だったという説でしょう。それは、砂糖のような甘さがあり、急速に蒸発すると白色の粒子に固まり、地上に転がり落ち、蟻の餌になると言います。森永製菓のマンナビスケットは、このマナ（アラム語でマンナ）にちなんで名づけられたお菓子であると言います。そもそもマナは、原語では「それは何ですか」を意味しており、イスラエルの民が、マナを初めて見た時の疑問をそのまま表現したことばです。実際にはよくわかっていません。
うずらは、冬をアラビア、またはアフリカで過ごすために、九月から十月にかけて地中海を横断し、春には再びシナイ半島を通ってヨーロッパへと移動します。イスラエルの民は、振り落とされたうずらを宿営の周囲に広げたとあります（民数記11:32）。それは、うずら、あひる、小鳥は、塩漬けにして生で食べるエジプトの食習慣がイスラエルにもあって、甘いマナに飽きて塩辛い肉を食べたいとつぶやいた事情をうかがわせるものです。
ともあれ、これらが約200万とも言われるイスラエルの民の必要を満たすものとなり、カナンに到着するまでの40年間続きました。またマナは六日目には2倍、七日目には何もないという形で、計画的に与えられました。つまりそれは、自然界で当たり前に起こる出来事ではなく、まさに神の配慮、神の超自然的なみわざとして生じたのです。二匹の魚と五つのパンの奇跡の物語ではありませんが、神が意志し、介入されるのでなければ起こりえないことでした。
なおマナは、よくイエス・キリストの象徴として解釈されます。マナは、荒野を放浪するイスラエル人のいのちを支えるものでした。同様にイエスは、人類に対する霊的ないのちのパンです。イスラエルの民が、マナによって荒野の40年間を支えられ生き延びたように、私たちも霊的ないのちパンであるキリストに支えられて、苦難多きこの社会を歩み通すことができるのです。キリストのことばに触れ、力づけられて、今日の一日も歩ませていただきたいものです。

Exodus 16: Manna in the Wilderness

The Israelites headed northwest across the Sinai Peninsula into the Wilderness of Sin. This is believed to be Debed el-Lamre, a sandy area in the southwestern part of the Sinai Peninsula. Even today, the land is completely devoid of greenery, except by springs and wells. It was already the fifteenth day of the second month, and one month had passed since they left Egypt. The food they had brought with them had run out, and they had to find food somewhere. And with no hope of finding any food, the Israelites murmured, “If only we had died at the hand of the Lord, we would have died at the hand of the Lord. I wish I had died at the Lord’s hand.
They must have been facing many difficult situations, and their anxiety probably compelled them to murmur in this way. During the day, there is no place to be in the shade under the blistering sun. At night, the temperature drops dramatically, sapping one’s strength. And then there is the wilderness, a vast expanse of rocky ground, where the dry wind blows relentlessly. Hundreds of thousands of food-starved people stand there. They were also traveling in a completely different direction from their destination, which they could have reached in just two weeks if they had taken the sea route. Given such a situation, one can understand how desperate they were, how they could not even think of God’s miracles at all, and how they regretted having been brought there by Moses alone.
It was precisely in this situation that they were called upon to raise their voices of faith with Moses. They had to work out their faith even more in light of what God had helped them do so far. That God had prepared drinkable water there when they had once complained because they could not drink the bitter water of Marah. And when they were pursued and cornered by the Egyptian army and in a desperate situation, God miraculously saved them by opening a way in the sea. Remembering these things, they were asked to trust in God who, together with Moses, could do things beyond their understanding in the midst of nothing. - the divine solution (16:4-36)
God gave manna and quails to the complaining Israelites. The Bible describes the manna as “like the seed of cilantro, white, and its taste was like crackers with honey in them” (16:31). There are many scientific explanations for this, but the most plausible would be that it was the excrement of an insect parasitic on a gyouryu tree. It is said to have a sugar-like sweetness that rapidly evaporates and hardens into white particles that tumble to the ground, where they become food for ants. Morinaga Seika’s manna cookies are said to be named after this manna (manna in Aramaic). In the original language, manna means “what is it?” and is a direct expression of the question that the Israelites asked when they first saw manna. In fact, it is not well understood.
Quail cross the Mediterranean Sea from September to October to spend the winter in Arabia or Africa, and in the spring they migrate back through the Sinai Peninsula to Europe. The Israelites spread the quails that were shaken off around their camp (Numbers 11:32). This suggests that quails, ducks, and small birds were part of the Egyptian dietary custom of eating them raw and salted, a circumstance that suggests that Israel was tired of the sweet manna and murmured a desire to eat the salty meat.
Anyway, these things satisfied the needs of the Israelites, who numbered about 2 million, and continued to do so for 40 years until they arrived in Canaan. The manna was also given systematically, doubled on the sixth day and nothing on the seventh day. In other words, this was not a natural occurrence, but a divine care, a supernatural act of God. It is not the story of the miracle of the two fish and the five loaves, but it could not have happened except God willed it and intervened.
Manna is often interpreted as a symbol of Jesus Christ. Manna sustained the life of the Israelites wandering in the wilderness. Likewise, Jesus is the bread of spiritual life for mankind. Just as the Israelites survived for 40 years in the wilderness, supported by the manna, we too can walk through the many hardships of this society, supported by Christ, our spiritual bread of life. I hope that we will walk through today’s day, touched by Christ’s words and strengthened by them.
