1．十のことば（20:1-17）
人が神と直接、面と向かい合うとしたら、それは心に恐れを抱くような経験になることでしょう。神がどのような方であるか、よくわからないからです。しかし、神は、聖書を通じてご自分について多くのことを語っています。旧約聖書、新約聖書に描かれたさまざまな歴史的なエピソードを通じて、神がどのような方であるかがわかりますし、直接的に神が語ったとされることばを通じても理解できます。たとえば神は、創世記に出て来るアブラハムという人物に対して、ご自身が全能の神であり、天地万物を創造、支配しておられる方、愛の配慮をなさるお方であることを明らかにしているのです。
ここではさらに、神はモーセを通して、ご自分が人に何を期待しているかを語っています。一般にキリスト教会では十戒と呼ばれる教えです。直訳は「十のことば」で、神は、ご自身の期待として10のことを語られたのです。
まずその導入となる前文（2節）が重要です。そこには、十のことばを交わすことになった神と人との関係が述べられているからです。神は、イスラエルの民に特別なあわれみをかけて、エジプトの奴隷から救い出し、新しい人生を生きるようにされました。
日本には、「恩に報いるは武士の習い」ということわざがあります。恩を受けたら必ずそれに報いるのが武士の習わしであるというわけです。イスラエルの民も神に恩義を受けた関係にあり、恩に感謝し、報いる心を持つのは自然なことでしょう。十のことばは、神に愛されたイスラエルに贈られたことばです。そしてイスラエルの民の幸せのためだけではなく、先祖に約束されたように、イスラエルを通して人類全体が幸せになるためのものなのです。
2．十のことばの内容
そこで十のことばの内容を見てまいりましょう。まず、大きく二つに区分されます。イエスも、この十のことばを二つに要約されました。神を認め愛すること、そして人を認め愛することです（マタイ22:37、38）。初めの四つは神を愛すること、残りの六つは隣人を愛することを教えています。
まず3節、最初のことばは、神の唯一性と絶対性を語っています。そして、4-5節、第二のことばは、神は霊であると語ります。ですから、勝手に神をあれこれ想像して「像」を作ってはならない、と偶像崇拝を戒めます（4-5節）。第三は7節、神を尊び、神の御名をみだりに唱えてはならないこと、第四は8節、神が人を祝福されるために設けられた安息の日を守るべきことを語っています。たしかに、神が人類を祝福されようと特別に設けられた日ならば、神と共に、神が与える安息を楽しみ喜ぶことが大切です。これらの戒めを守るなら、恵みが千代にまで施されると、神はお墨付きを付けています。素晴らしい結果が得られるというのなら、取り組まない理由はありません。
続いて人に対する態度を語ることばに注目してまいりましょう。12節、第五のことばは自分の両親を敬い大切にすることを教えます。儒教で忠孝という「孝」に通じる教えです。両親によく聞き従い、両親が老いたならば、支え大切にケアしていく。聖書が教えることは最もなことです。第六に13節、いのちは尊ぶべしです。人は神のかたちに似せて造られました。全ての人のいのちは大切で、愛されるものです。そこで第七に、いのちをはぐくむ性、婚姻の関係も大事にすべきだと言います。第八は、人の所有物を大切に扱いなさいと言います（15節）。第九は、人の名誉は守りなさいと教えます（16節）。最後に、人の心を大切にしなさい、と言います（17節）。むさぼりを避けるのは、自他共に心の清らかさを大切にすることを意味します。人を羨んで一番嫌な思いをするのは自分です。自分の心を清く保ち、自分を痛めつけないことです。
ただ、どうでしょう。いろいろと言われることはよくわかっても、なかなかそのようには実行できないと思う人は多いでしょう。だからこそ人は神の助け、神の救いを必要とするのです。自分の現実を素直に受け入れ、謙遜になって、まずイエスにある十字架の罪の赦しを求める、そして、イエスにある復活のいのちを求めることが大切なのです。
十のことばは、私たちの努力目標のようなものです。誰も、私はこれができているとは言えないものです。しかしこの目標を心に留めながら、絶えず神の赦しと助けに生きていく、それが信仰者の歩みです。

- The Ten Words (20:1-17)
If a person were to come face to face with God, it would be a frightening experience, because we don’t really know what kind of person God is. However, God has told us a lot about Himself through the Bible. We can see what kind of person God is through various historical episodes depicted in the Old and New Testaments, and we can also understand Him through the words that He is said to have spoken directly. For example, God reveals to Abraham in Genesis that He is an almighty God, that He created and rules over all things in heaven and earth, and that He cares for us with love.
Here, God also tells us through Moses what He expects from people. These teachings are generally called the Ten Commandments in the Christian church. The literal translation is “ten words,” and God spoke ten things as His expectations.
First of all, the introduction (verse 2) is important. This is because it describes the relationship between God and man that led to the exchange of the Ten Words. God showed special mercy to the people of Israel, delivered them from slavery in Egypt, and enabled them to live a new life.
In Japan, there is a proverb that says, “It is the custom of the samurai to repay a favor.” It is the custom of the samurai to always repay a favor when they receive it. The people of Israel were also indebted to God, so it is natural that they would be grateful for the favor and have a heart to repay it. The Ten Words were words sent to Israel, who was loved by God. And they are not only for the happiness of the people of Israel, but also for the happiness of all humanity through Israel, as promised to their ancestors.
- The content of the Ten Words
So let’s look at the content of the Ten Words. First, they are roughly divided into two parts. Jesus also summarized these Ten Words into two parts: to recognize and love God, and to recognize and love people (Matthew 22:37, 38). The first four teach us to love God, and the remaining six teach us to love our neighbors.
First, in verse 3, the first words speak of the uniqueness and absoluteness of God. Then, in verses 4-5, the second words say that God is a spirit. Therefore, it warns against idolatry, saying that we should not make “cartoons” of God by imagining things of different kinds (verses 4-5). The third, in verse 7, speaks of honoring God and not taking His name in vain, and the fourth, in verse 8, speaks of keeping the Sabbath, which God established to bless mankind. Certainly, if it is a day that God has set aside specifically to bless mankind, it is important to enjoy and rejoice with God in the Sabbath that He gives us. God has given His stamp of approval that if we keep these commandments, His blessings will be bestowed upon us for a thousand generations. If we can get wonderful results, there is no reason not to try.
Next, let’s look at the words that speak of attitudes toward people. The fifth words in verse 12 teach us to respect and cherish our parents. This teaching is related to the “filial piety” of Confucianism, which is about loyalty and filial piety. Listen carefully to your parents, and when they grow old, support and care for them. This is the most important thing the Bible teaches. In the sixth verse, verse 13, life is to be respected. Humans are created in the image of God. Every human life is precious and should be loved. So in the seventh verse, it says that we should also value sexual and marital relationships, which nurture life. In the eighth verse, it says to treat other people’s possessions with care (verse 15). In the ninth verse, it teaches us to protect the honor of others (verse 16). Finally, it says to respect other people’s hearts (verse 17). Avoiding greed means valuing the purity of one’s heart, both for oneself and for others. The person who feels the most bad about envying others is oneself. Keep your heart pure and do not hurt yourself.
But, what do you think? Many people may understand what is said, but find it difficult to put it into practice. That is why people need God’s help and God’s salvation. It is important that we honestly accept our reality, be humble, and first seek forgiveness for our sins on the cross in Jesus, and then seek the life of resurrection in Jesus.
The Ten Words are like a goal to strive for. No one can say that they are able to do this. However, keeping this goal in mind, living in constant reverence for God’s forgiveness and help, that is the walk of a believer.
