1．転落したヨセフ（40:1）
なぜヨセフは、ヤコブに愛されたのでしょうか。聖書は年寄り子だからと書いていますが、そればかりではないのでしょう。つまりヤコブは、ヨセフが、自分と近い感覚を持つ子と感じていたのではないでしょうか。怒りに任せて剣を振り回すレビやシメオンは、明らかに自分とは異なる感覚を持った子です。しかしヨセフは「夢を見る者」でした。ヤコブも同じでした。神はヨセフとともにあると思うところがあったのでしょう。ですから、ヨセフを一層愛したと言えます。
ともあれヨセフは、そのような親の特別な愛情の中から放り出されて「奴隷」となり、「囚人」となっていくのです。その生活変化と、ヨセフが失ったものはあまりにも大きいものでした。彼には、もはや自分の好きな人生を生きる自由はありませんでした。ただひたすら主人の意思に服従するだけの人生です。ことばもわからず、食べ物や着る物など、習慣も文化も全く異なる社会に、彼は無理やり順応させられていくのです。誰も特別扱いしてはくれず、大きな顔をさせてくれる者も、失敗を大目に見てくれる者もいないのです。兄を恨んでも、父ヤコブの助けに望みを託しても、無駄なのです。
そうであればこそ、ヨセフもまた、父ヤコブに聞かされたであろうベテルの神を呼び求めたのでしょう。彼の神に対する誠実さは、誰も味方してくれなかった孤独さの中で生じたものだったと言えます。
そして神は、そのようなヨセフを見捨てられませんでした。監獄にあっても「主が彼とともにおられた」とあるように、神は、ヨセフを守り、その手の業を祝されたのです。そして、ヨセフの人生を大きく変えていく、出会いが生じるのです。
2．夢を解き明かすヨセフ（40：2－23）
ちょうど、王の献酌官長と料理官長が罪を犯し、監獄に入れられた時のことです。彼らは、ヨセフが監禁されている同じ場所に入れられ、ヨセフは彼らの世話係となる機会を与えられました。
献酌官は、一般に儀式や宴会などで、主賓や重要な人物に酒を注ぐ役職ですが、当時は、王を陰謀から守る護衛でもありました。料理官長については説明するまでもありませんが、この二人は、ある夜、夢を見るのです。そして、彼らの夢はヨセフによって説き明かされました。「夢を解き明かすことは神のなさること」と、ここでも神を信頼し、神に生きるヨセフの信仰的な姿が描かれています。
そしてヨセフは、この機会に、自分の回復を願います。確かに、聖書の著者は、ヨセフが好意を得た、成功したと語りますが、ヨセフの思いが満足していたわけではないのです。ヨセフの思いは、回復にありました。献酌官長にヨセフが訴えています（14節）。ヨセフの感情が強く感じられるところです。
しかし、神の助けはまだ先のことでした。献酌官長は、監獄から解放されると、ヨセフに対する恩義がありながらも、ヨセフのことを思い出さずに、忘れてしまうのです。何とも理不尽な。しかし、世の中ではよくあることと言えるでしょう。そしてヨセフはそれから約2年、さらに見捨てられた状態にありました。何ともヨセフの思いは、見事に裏切られ、一夏、二夏と時が過ぎていくのです。
ただ人が忘れようと、神が忘れることはありません。また神は、ご自身が計画したことを途中で投げ出すような方でもありません。必ず、成し遂げられるお方です。人の思いや願いとは異なるところで、神の働きはなされていくのです。人は、その測りがたい神のみこころにただ服従させられる時があります。自らの人生の先をただ神に委ねて、ただ神を信頼して過ごさねばならぬ時があるのです。
新約聖書、ヘブル人への手紙の著者は言いました。「あなたがたが神のみこころを行なって、約束のものを手に入れるために必要なのは忍耐です。」（10:36）またヤコブも自らの手紙の中でこう語っています。「その忍耐を完全に働かせなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは、何一つ欠けたところのない、成長を遂げた、完全な者となります。」（1:4）神のなさることが自分の思うところとはかけ離れている、自分には何も望みがないと思わされるような時にこそ、忍耐に忍耐を重ねてみましょう。信仰の試練は、必ず良き実を結ぶものであること、神の祝福は思いも寄らぬ時、思いも寄らぬ所から生じることを覚えたいものです。神のことばは真実です。神の祝福がありますように。チャンネル登録、メンバー登録よろしくお願いいたします。ではまた明日このチャンネルでお会いしましょう。
Chapter 40: The Dreams of the Chief Cupbearer and Chief Baker and Their Interpretations
- Joseph’s Fall (40:1)
Why was Joseph loved by Jacob? The Bible says it was because he was an old man, but there was more to it than that. In other words, Jacob must have felt that Joseph was a child with similar sensibilities to himself. Levi and Simeon, who wielded their swords in anger, were clearly children with different sensibilities than Jacob. But Joseph was a “dreamer.” Jacob was the same. He probably thought that God was with Joseph. That’s why he loved Joseph even more.
In any case, Joseph was cast out of the special love of his parents and became a “slave” and a “prisoner.” The change in his life and what Joseph lost were too great. He no longer had the freedom to live the life he wanted. His life was one of complete submission to his master’s will. He is forced to adapt to a society where he does not understand the language, and where the customs and culture, including the food and clothing, are completely different from his. No one treats him specially, no one lets him be arrogant, and no one overlooks his failures. There is no point in resenting his brother or pinning his hopes on his father Jacob for help.
That is why Joseph must have called on the God of Bethel, whom his father Jacob would have told him about. His sincerity toward God was born out of the loneliness he felt when no one was on his side.
But God did not abandon Joseph. Even in prison, as it says, “the Lord was with him,” God protected Joseph and blessed the work of his hands. And so he had an encounter that would greatly change Joseph’s life.
- Joseph Interprets the Dream (40:2-23)
It was just at the time when the king’s chief cupbearer and chief baker committed a crime and were thrown into prison. They were placed in the same place where Joseph was imprisoned, and Joseph was given the opportunity to take care of them.
The cupbearer is generally a person who pours drinks for guests of honor and important people at ceremonies and banquets, but at that time he also served as a guard to protect the king from conspiracies. There is no need to explain about the chief baker, but one night the two men had a dream. Joseph then interpreted their dream. “It is God who interprets dreams,” and again Joseph’s faith is portrayed as someone who trusts in God and lives by him.
Joseph then took this opportunity to pray for his own recovery. Certainly, the author of the Bible tells us that Joseph had gained favor and was successful, but this does not mean that Joseph was satisfied. Joseph’s thoughts were on recovery. Joseph appeals to the chief cupbearer (verse 14). You can feel Joseph’s strong emotions here.
However, God’s help was still a long way off. When the chief cupbearer was released from prison, he did not remember Joseph, even though he owed him a debt of gratitude. How unreasonable. However, this is something that often happens in the world. And Joseph was abandoned for about two more years. Joseph’s hopes were completely betrayed, and time passed, one summer after another.
However, even if people forget, God does not forget. And God is not the kind of person who abandons what he has planned halfway through. He is the kind of person who always accomplishes his plans. God’s work is carried out in a place that is different from people’s thoughts and desires. There are times when people are forced to simply submit to the unfathomable will of God. There are times when they must simply entrust the future of their lives to God and spend their lives trusting in Him.
The author of the New Testament, the Epistle to the Hebrews, said: “You need patience, so that when you have done God’s will, you will receive what he has promised” (10:36). James also says in his letter, “Let patience have its perfect work, so that you may be complete and complete, lacking nothing” (1:4). Let us be patient and patient, especially when God’s actions seem far from what we want, and when we feel like there is no hope for us. Let us remember that the trials of our faith always bear good fruit, and that God’s blessings come from unexpected times and places. God’s Word is true. May God bless us.
