Genesis 41 Pharaoh’s dream and its interpretation, Joseph’s salvation

  1. Pharaoh’s dream (41:11-44)
Two years had passed since the chief cupbearer forgot Joseph. People forget things, but God never forgets things. God is the one who quietly carries out the plans he has made. God gave Pharaoh a dream (the king of Egypt was called Pharaoh, but originally Pharaoh meant “big house” and referred to someone who lived in a large mansion).
The first dream was of seven ugly, thin cows eating up seven shiny, well-fed cows. The second dream was of seven shriveled ears of rice scorched by the east wind swallowing up the seven fat, plentiful ears of rice. Pharaoh woke up restless, and in the morning he called for the magicians and wise men from all over Egypt. Originally, the word “sorcerer” meant “one who wields a stylus,” “one who engraves,” or “one who writes.” From there, it came to mean “one who has knowledge.” Of course, knowledge means sorcery, divination, magic, etc., which tell the future and destiny of individuals and countries. However, they were unable to convince Pharaoh of the interpretation of the dream with their knowledge. At that time, the chief cupbearer remembered Joseph. He told Pharaoh that the person who had once interpreted his dreams was in prison. Thus, the time appointed by God came. Joseph was called from prison.
  2. Joseph is Freed (41:45-47)
Joseph was once despised as “a dreamer.” The word literally translates to “Lord of dreams.” Now Joseph stands before Pharaoh as the Lord who can freely interpret dreams. But Joseph says, “Not I, but God.” The Lord of the dream is God, not himself. God gives the dream, and God interprets it. Here too, Joseph maintains a faithful attitude, an attitude of acknowledging God and honoring Him. He tells people what God is going to do and calls them to respond to it.
According to him, there will be seven years of plenty in Egypt, followed by seven years of famine, so they should store food in preparation for the famine. It is God who always guides the times. It is important to respond to God. Joseph’s interpretation convinced Pharaoh and all his servants. Pharaoh immediately promoted Joseph to his position as minister. It is likely that Joseph was selected as a special minister.
The Egyptian name given to Joseph, Zaphenath-Paneah, means “Savior of the World.” Pharaoh gave Joseph rule over the entire land of Egypt. On (or Heliopolis), 16 km north of Cairo, is now Tell Husn and is a historically important town. It was the center of Egyptian civilization, with a priestly school, a medical school, and other facilities. It is believed that Moses was also educated in Heliopolis and became a priest. Joseph married Asenath, the daughter of Potipera, a priest in this town. Thus, Joseph’s name became known throughout Egypt. He was already 30 years old.
The name of the pharaoh whom Joseph served as minister is not well known. Many scholars believe that he was a king of the Hyksos period of the 15th dynasty. In fact, the fact that the pharaoh lived near the land of Goshen, where he allowed Joseph’s family to settle, suggests the Hyksos period, when the capital was in the Delta region. It is also believed that Joseph, a Semite, was given such an important position because the king was not purely Egyptian. However, as the Beni Hasan inscription indicates that the Semites were well known in Egypt, there is also a theory that Joseph went down to Egypt at an earlier time. In fact, the fact that shepherds were hated by the Egyptians (46:34) and that they could not eat with the Hebrews (43:32) suggest that Pharaoh was a pure Egyptian. However, it is possible that the Hyksos followed the customs of the conquered people, so we cannot say for sure.

Anyway, what we need to understand from this chapter 41 is how God uses people. People are often abandoned in hardships, but this does not last forever, and it may just be a necessary process to carve out a new life for themselves. Even in hardships, we should not panic, but trust in God and expect the best from Him.
