- 飢饉が起こる（42:1-5）
パレスチナの飢饉は、神が引き起こしたものでした。一見、一個人の人間とはなんら関係がなさそうに思える自然現象や社会変動が、極めて深い関係があるかのように語られていきます。スケールの大きな話ですが、神がそのように人の問題を取り扱われる、ということを考えると、何か希望を感じるものがあります。
というのも、今日家族の複雑な問題は、家族の誰かが変われば解決するという問題ではないからです。カウンセリングをしても、様々な家庭教育セミナーに出ても、全く解決がつかず、ずるずる時間が過ぎてしまうことはあるものでしょう。そして真剣に向かい合えば会うほどに、お互い傷を深めてしまう。まるで犯人を捜すかのように問題を特定し、その問題を矯正していくようなやり方で物事が解決することはまずありません。というのも家族の問題は、家族内だけの問題によるわけではないからです。それは複雑に社会の問題とも絡み合っています。そのような意味で、社会が動くことで、変わりにくい家族が変わらざるを得ないということが起こったりすることもあるのです。
エジプトの飢饉はパレスチナをも巻き込み、穀物不足を生み出し、ヤコブの家族がヨセフに会わざるを得ない状況を作り出した。しかし、すでに約20年の歳月が流れていたのです。もはや父ヤコブにとって、ヨセフは死んだ過去の人で、兄弟たちにとっても実質的には記憶のかなたに押し込められた存在でした。そんなヨセフが兄弟たちと再会するのです。ヨセフは、ひれ伏す兄弟たちを見下ろしながら、かつての夢を思い出したことでしょう（37:6-11）。兄弟たちはヨセフの夢をあざ笑い、これを抹殺しようとしましたが、神から出たその夢は、消え去ることなく現実のものとなったのです。
2．心を開けないヨセフ（42:6-38）
ヨセフと兄弟たちの再会は、引き裂かれた家族がもう一度回復され、一つになり、祝福されるかどうかの重要な時でした。
かつて古き日本には、家族内でやっかいな問題を引き起こす子どもを「宝息子」と呼ぶ習慣があったと言います。「問題児」ではなく「宝息子」。家族を一つにし、家族にさらによい絆をもたらす息子というわけです。私たちが、問題を起こすかどうかは別として、私たちが宝息子になることは重要です。混乱した家族、近隣、職場を回復させていく鍵となる存在になることです。
ヨセフが彼らのことばを理解しているとも知らず、兄弟たちは、昔の事件について語り始めました。事の真相が明らかにされました（22節）。皆が敵だったわけではありません。少なくとも長子のルベンは彼を守ろうとしていました。しかしできなかったと言うのです。ヨセフは事の次第を理解し、心を動かされましたが、そこですぐに心を開いて、「私はヨセフです」と告白するまでには至らなかったのです。
むしろ暴君のように、シメオンを人質にし、弟のベニヤミンを連れてくるように言い渡し、兄弟をカナンに帰すのです。ヨセフの心は複雑に揺れ動いていたのでしょう。神の人と言えども、感情が邪魔をして、考えた通りには行動できない、ということもあるのです。
ヨセフは長子をマナセと名づけました。マナセが誕生したことで、「神がすべての労苦と父の全家とを忘れさせた」からです。兄弟たちから受けた苦しみ、そしてエジプトでの濡れ衣や投獄など、様々な苦しみを忘れることができるほど幸せを感じたということです。しかし、実際には、そう感じていただけで、心の奥底には火種のように燻るものが残っていたのでしょう。実際には、彼はただ、自分の心を癒すだけの人生を生きて来たのです。
確かに、ヨセフは、エジプトの大臣になった後、自分の家に帰ろうと思えばいつでも帰れたはずです。しかし、そのようにさせない何かがあったのです。それは、兄弟たちへの憎しみであったかもしれません。あるいは、そもそもこのような結末を引き起こした父の偏愛に対する怒り、父をも赦せない心であったのかもしれません。さらに、たとえ自分から会いに行ったとしても、本当によい再会を果たし得ない、という、思いもあったのかもしれません。
彼は自分の殻に閉じこもり続けていました。しかしヨセフは動き出すのです。いや神がその御手をもってヨセフの肩を押した、と言うべきでしょう。私たちの様々なわだかまり、複雑な思いを超えた行動を励まし、促す神がいるのです。奴隷から囚人へ、そして大臣へ、さらにヤコブ家の息子へ、収まるべきところに収まっていく、これは皆神のなさったことです。心の奥深く抱え、手に負えないことについては、神の解決に期待し、神の時を待ち、祈りを重ねることです。

Chapter 42 Brothers Reunited with Joseph
- A Famine Occurs (42:1-5)
The Palestinian famine was caused by God. Natural phenomena and social changes that at first glance seem to have nothing to do with individual humans are spoken of as if they have a very deep connection. It’s a story on a grand scale, but when you think about God dealing with human problems in this way, there is something hopeful about it.
The reason is that today’s complex family problems are not problems that can be solved by someone changing. Even if you have counseling or attend various family education seminars, there may be times when the problem is not resolved at all and time passes. And the more seriously you face the problem, the deeper the wounds you inflict. Things are unlikely to be solved by identifying the problem as if you were searching for the culprit and correcting it. This is because family problems are not just problems within the family. They are intricately intertwined with social problems. In that sense, when society moves, it can happen that families that are difficult to change are forced to change.
The Egyptian famine also affected Palestine, creating a grain shortage and forcing Jacob’s family to meet Joseph. However, about 20 years had already passed. To his father Jacob, Joseph was already a dead man of the past, and to his brothers, he was practically a distant memory. Now Joseph was reunited with his brothers. As Joseph looked down at his prostrated brothers, he must have remembered his dream (37:6-11). The brothers mocked Joseph’s dream and tried to erase it, but the dream that came from God did not disappear and became reality. - Joseph cannot open his heart (42:6-38)
The reunion of Joseph and his brothers was a crucial moment in determining whether the torn family would be restored, united, and blessed once again.
It is said that in ancient Japan, there was a custom of calling a child who caused troublesome problems within a family “treasure son.” Not a “problem child,” but a “treasured son.” A son who brings the family together and brings better ties to the family. Whether we cause trouble or not, it is important for us to become treasured sons. We can become the key to restoring a family, neighborhood, or workplace that is in disarray.
Not knowing that Joseph understood what they were saying, the brothers began to talk about the past incident. The truth of the matter was revealed (verse 22). Not everyone was an enemy. At least Reuben, the eldest son, had tried to protect him, but he was unable to. Joseph understood what had happened and was moved, but he did not immediately open up and confess, “I am Joseph.”
Rather, like a tyrant, he took Simeon hostage, ordered his brother Benjamin to be brought to him, and sent the brothers back to Canaan. Joseph’s heart must have been complex and turbulent. Even if you are a man of God, your emotions can get in the way and you may not be able to act as you wish.
Joseph named his firstborn son Manasseh. Because Manasseh was born, “God made him forget all his labor and all his father’s house.” He felt so happy that he was able to forget the pain he had received from his brothers, the false accusation and imprisonment in Egypt, and all the other pains. However, in reality, he had only felt that way, and something smoldered like a fire remained deep in his heart. In reality, he had lived his life only to heal his own heart.
Of course, after becoming the minister in Egypt, Joseph could have returned to his home whenever he wanted. However, there was something that prevented him from doing so. It could have been hatred for his brothers. Or perhaps it was anger at his father’s partiality that had caused this outcome in the first place, or a heart that could not forgive his father. Furthermore, he may have felt that even if he went to see his father himself, he would not be able to have a truly happy reunion.
He had continued to withdraw into his shell. But Joseph began to move. Or perhaps it would be better to say that God took His hand and pushed Joseph’s shoulder. There is a God who encourages and urges us to act beyond our various grudges and complicated feelings. From slave to prisoner, to minister, and then to the son of Jacob, everything fell into place as it should have, and this was all done by God. For the things we hold deep in our hearts and cannot handle, we should hope for God’s solution, wait for God’s timing, and pray repeatedly.
