©Dr. Makoto

【Season 6】Psalm 134 Explained Simply: Who Supports Our Worship?

  1. The People Who Support Worship

When a worship service ends, we naturally go home. This happens every week. Yet we may not often think about the people who work behind the scenes so that worship can continue. The people who attend are easy to notice, but those who support the service are less visible. Psalm 134 is a short poem that helps us notice this hidden work.

  1. The Historical and Literary Context

Psalm 134 stands at the end of the Songs of Ascents. It may reflect the moment when pilgrims finished worship at the temple in Jerusalem and prepared to return to their own towns.

The people addressed here are those “who stand in the house of the Lord by night.” It is natural to understand them as priests and Levites who served in the temple. At that time, the priests offered burnt offerings morning and evening, burned incense, prayed for the people, and carried out many acts of worship. Most of the main temple activities took place during the day. Yet work continued at night through guarding the temple, caring for the gates, and keeping the area in order.

  1. The Flow of the Psalm

Now let us look at the flow of this psalm.

Verses 1 to 2: A Call to Praise the Lord

The pilgrims speak to those who serve in the temple and call them to “praise the Lord.” Their attention is especially directed toward those serving at night. They invite them to lift their hands and worship the Lord.

Verse 3: A Blessing from the Lord

Then the direction of the words changes. The priests answer the pilgrims with a blessing: “May the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth, bless you from Zion.” Praise rises from people to God, and blessing comes from God to people. The psalm closes as these two movements meet.

  1. How to Read This Psalm

The center of this psalm is not only the blessing in verse 3. We need to read verses 1 and 2 together with verse 3.

The people praise God, and God blesses the people. This exchange of praise and blessing stands at the heart of the psalm. The poem also draws attention not only to the pilgrims, but to the servants who support the temple. Worship does not belong to only one group. It is sustained by the whole community.

  1. Message for Us Today

Worship is not only a place we attend. At times, we may focus mainly on how much blessing we receive. Yet Psalm 134 asks us to remember the people who support worship. A worship service does not continue through the congregation alone. Behind every weekly service are people who pray, prepare, and serve. Worship is sustained as those who praise God and those who support the gathering stand before the Lord together. In that worship, people praise God, and God blesses His people.

Psalm 134 recognizes the service of those who work in God’s house. It also invites us to share in the blessing of worship and live within it. When the next worship service ends, let us pray not only for our own blessing, but also for those who praise God and serve beside us.

See you again tomorrow.
