Dr. Makoto
[Season 6] Proverbs 31 Explained Simply: What Does a Wise Life Look Like?
- Introduction: How Do We Measure Success in Life?
When we evaluate people, we often focus on their achievements, abilities, and positions. How much have they worked? How much recognition have they received? How wealthy have they become? But do these things alone determine the value of a person’s life?
As the conclusion of the whole book of Proverbs, Proverbs 31 presents the lives of a king and a woman. Through their practical way of living, the chapter answers the question, “What does a wise life look like?”
- The Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter
Verses 1–9 contain “the sayings of King Lemuel of Massa, which his mother taught him.” The final chapter of Proverbs begins not with a father’s teaching, but with a mother’s. This shows that wisdom is passed down within the family.
The teaching for the king in the first part and the poem about the capable wife in the second part are not separate stories. Both the king and the woman fulfill their responsibilities for the sake of others, not for their own benefit. They especially share a concern for people in vulnerable positions. In this sense, both sections can be understood as examples of living with wisdom.
The poem about the “capable wife” in verses 10–31 is also an acrostic poem in Hebrew. Each verse begins with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. This suggests an intention to present a complete picture of a wise way of life.
- The Flow of This Chapter
Now, let us look at the content of this chapter.
Verses 1–9: “A Mother’s Teaching for a King”
King Lemuel’s mother warns him not to lose himself in women or lose his judgment through drinking. The reason is that he may “pervert the rights of all the afflicted.” She then commands him, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,” teaching him that a king has a responsibility to protect the weak.
Verses 10–22: “The Work of a Capable Wife”
This section begins with the question, “Who can find a capable wife?” It describes a woman who works diligently, provides for her family, and prepares for the future. Her work is not limited to the home. However, the focus is not simply on the success of her work. It is on her diligence, responsibility, concern for the weak, wise words, fear of the Lord, and the way she actually lives with wisdom.
Verses 23–31: “The Fruit of a Wise Person’s Life”
The passage describes a woman who is trusted by her husband and children. She “speaks with wisdom” and “does not eat the bread of idleness.” The chapter closes with the words, “A woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
- A Message for Us
We sometimes evaluate other people, and even ourselves, by achievements and titles. Proverbs 31, however, places the value of life somewhere else. It is found in faithfully carrying out the responsibilities we have been given while fearing the Lord.
Ninomiya Sontoku left us the phrase sekishō idai, which means “great things grow from the steady gathering of small things.” The woman described in Proverbs 31 is not praised because of one great success. Her life is shaped by the steady practice of daily diligence and faithfulness.
Yet Proverbs speaks about something deeper than steady effort. At the heart of that effort is a daily posture of fearing the Lord and living by his wisdom. Proverbs begins by saying, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” It also ends by saying, “A woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
Wisdom is not only for a special group of people. Wisdom is the life of trusting the Lord and faithfully carrying out the responsibilities we have been given.
What standard are we using today to measure the value of a life? Let us read the Bible together again tomorrow. Tomorrow, we will begin the book of Ecclesiastes.
