1．失敗は突然起こるのか

「やめたほうがいいと分かっていたのに」。そんな後悔をしたことはないでしょうか。大きな失敗は突然起きたように見えても、実際にはその前に小さな選択が積み重なっています。

箴言7章は、誘惑に負けた若者の物語を通して、人がなぜ同じ失敗を繰り返すのかを問いかけます。

2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈

箴言1～9章は、父が子に知恵を教える長い訓戒で構成されています。7章はその終盤に位置します。

本章は物語形式で展開されるのが特徴です。父の教えの後、若者の行動が順を追って描かれ、知恵の欠如がどのような結果を招くかが示されます。

また、続く8章では「知恵」が人格を持つ存在として語り始めます。7章は、誘惑の声と知恵の声との対比へ向かう重要な橋渡しとなっています。

3．本章の流れ

では、本章の内容を見てまいりましょう。

1～5節「知恵を身近なものとせよ」

父は「私のことばを守り」と勧め、知恵を「妹」、英知を「身内」と呼ぶよう語ります。

6～23節「若者の転落」

語り手は窓から若者を見ます。彼は女の家へ続く道を進み、巧みな言葉に引き寄せられていきます。

24～27節「最後の警告」

父は「彼女の道に、心がそれて行ってはならない」と語り、その道の終着点を警告します。

4．本章の読み方

箴言7章の重心は、誘惑そのものよりも、それに向かっていく心の動きにあります。

若者の問題は、誘惑が強すぎたことではありません。すでに家の近くを歩き、暗くなる時間にそこへ向かい、小さな判断を重ねていました。箴言は、破滅の瞬間ではなく、その前の選択に注目しています。

また、「よその女」は単なる人物描写にとどまりません。目先の魅力によって正しい道から逸れていく危険を象徴的に示しています。

5．私たちへのメッセージ

私たちは失敗の原因を最後の決定的な出来事に求めがちです。しかし箴言7章は、その前にある心の向きこそ見つめるべきだと教えます。

日本には「初心忘るべからず」という言葉があります。世阿弥が『風姿花伝』で語った言葉ですが、これは単に熱意を保つだけでなく、自分を振り返り続ける姿勢の大切さを示しています。

箴言7章も同じように、問題が起きてからではなく、その前の心の方向を問い直します。今日、私たちはどの声をより身近なものとして聞いているでしょうか。その問いを心に留めながら、共に知恵の道を歩んでいきたいと思います。

Proverbs 7 | Why Do We Repeat Mistakes We Knew We Should Avoid?

1. Introduction: Does Failure Happen Suddenly?

Have you ever regretted something and thought, “I knew I should not do that”? A major failure may look sudden, but in fact, many small choices usually come before it.

Proverbs 7 asks why people repeat the same mistakes. It does this through the story of a young man who gives in to temptation.

2. The Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter

Proverbs chapters 1–9 are made up of long teachings in which a father gives wisdom to his child. Chapter 7 comes near the end of this section.

This chapter is special because it develops as a story. After the father’s teaching, the young man’s actions are described step by step, showing what can happen when wisdom is missing.

In the next chapter, Wisdom begins to speak like a person. Chapter 7 is therefore an important bridge toward the contrast between the voice of temptation and the voice of wisdom.

3. The Flow of This Chapter

Now, let us look at the content of this chapter.

Verses 1–5: ‘Keep Wisdom Close to You’

The father says, “Keep my words.” He tells the listener to call wisdom a sister and understanding a close relative.

Verses 6–23: ‘The Young Man’s Fall’

The speaker watches a young man from a window. The young man walks toward the woman’s house and is drawn in by her clever words.

Verses 24–27: ‘The Final Warning’

The father says, “Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways.” He warns where that road finally leads.

4. How to Read This Chapter

The main focus of Proverbs 7 is not temptation itself, but the movement of the heart toward it.

The young man’s problem was not simply that the temptation was too strong. He had already walked near her house, gone there as darkness came, and made several small decisions. Proverbs focuses not only on the moment of ruin, but also on the choices that came before it.

The “strange woman” is more than a description of one person. She symbolically shows the danger of leaving the right path because of something attractive in front of us.

5. A Message for Us

We often look for the cause of failure in the final, decisive event. However, Proverbs 7 teaches us to examine the direction of our heart before that moment.

In Japan, there is a saying, “Do not forget your beginner’s heart.” Zeami used this expression in Fūshikaden. It means more than keeping our first enthusiasm; it also shows the importance of continuing to examine ourselves.

In the same way, Proverbs 7 asks us to reconsider the direction of our heart before a problem happens, not only after it happens. Which voice are we keeping closest today? Let us hold that question in our hearts and walk together on the path of wisdom.
