1．たった二節の詩篇
世界には多くの国や民族があります。歴史を振り返ると、人々は言語や文化、価値観の違いによって分かれてきました。そのような人々が、同じ対象を共にたたえるという光景は、現実にはなかなか想像しにくいものです。では、いったい何があれば、人は自分たちの違いを超えて同じ賛美に加わることができるのでしょうか。
詩篇117篇は聖書の中で最も短い章です。たった二節しかありません。しかし、その視野は驚くほど広く、一民族や一地域にとどまりません。詩人は全世界に向かって語りかけ、なぜすべての国々が主を賛美すべきなのかを簡潔に示しています。
2．本篇の歴史的・文学的文脈
詩篇117篇は、詩篇113篇から118篇まで続く「ハレル詩篇」と呼ばれる賛美の詩群の一つです。祭りや礼拝の中で歌われてきた賛美の歌として読むことができます。
前の116篇では、一人の信仰者が神の救いを感謝していました。しかし117篇では、その視野が一気に広がります。詩人はイスラエルだけでなく、「すべての国々」「すべての国民」に向かって主を賛美するよう呼びかけているのです。
3．本篇の流れ
では、本篇の内容を見てまいりましょう。
1節「万国への賛美の招き」
詩篇117篇は命令形で始まります。
「すべての国々よ、主をほめたたえよ。すべての国民よ、主をほめ歌え」。
ここで詩人は、特定の民族や集団ではなく、あらゆる国々に向かって呼びかけています。「国々」と「国民」という似た表現を重ねることで、招きの範囲が可能な限り広く示されています。まず語られるのは、万国が主を賛美するよう招かれているという事実です。
2節「賛美の理由」
続いて詩人は、その理由を説明します。
それは主の「恵み」と「まこと」です。ここでいう恵みとは、変わることのない慈しみを指します。また「まこと」とは、神の誠実さや信頼できるお方であることを表しています。
詩人は、人々が主を賛美する理由を人間の側に求めていません。賛美の根拠は、主ご自身の変わらない慈しみとまことにあるのです。そして詩篇は、「ハレルヤ」という賛美の言葉で締めくくられます。
4．本篇の読み方
この詩篇で考えさせられるのは、2節の「私たち」とは誰を指しているのかという点です。
一つの読み方は、「私たち」をイスラエルと見るものです。その場合、神がイスラエルに示された大きな慈しみを見て、諸国民も「その神をほめたたえよ」と招かれていることになります。
もう一つの読み方は、「私たち」をイスラエルだけに限定せず、諸国民をも含む広い範囲で理解するものです。その場合、諸国民も神の慈しみにあずかる者として、共に主を賛美するよう招かれていることになります。
本文は短いため、どちらか一方と断定することはできません。ただ、どちらの読み方でも変わらないことがあります。それは、人々が賛美する理由が主の慈しみとまことにあるという点です。この詩篇の中心はそこにあります。
5．現代の私たちへの適用
詩篇117篇が描いているのは、個人的な悩みや願いではありません。世界全体を見渡す大きな視野です。
現代社会では、国や民族、文化や思想の違いがまず目に入ります。互いの違いを理解することは大切ですが、この詩篇はそこからさらに一歩進んだ視点を示しています。詩人が見ているのは、人間の違いではなく、そのすべての上におられる主です。
そして興味深いのは、詩人がただ「主を賛美せよ」と命じて終わらないことです。なぜ賛美するのか、その理由まで語っています。それが主の慈しみとまことです。

Psalm 117 Explained Simply: An Invitation for All Nations to Praise
1. Introduction
There are many nations and peoples in the world. When we look back through history, people have been divided by differences in language, culture, and values. It is not easy to imagine all these people praising the same One together. What could help people move beyond their differences and join in the same praise?
Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible. It has only two verses. Yet its view is amazingly wide and is not limited to one nation or one area. The psalmist speaks to the whole world and briefly shows why all nations should praise the Lord.
2. The Historical and Literary Context
Psalm 117 is one of the Hallel Psalms, a group of songs of praise from Psalms 113 to 118. It can be read as a song of praise used at festivals and in worship.
In Psalm 116, one believer thanked God for rescue. But in Psalm 117, the view suddenly becomes much wider. The psalmist calls not only Israel but “all nations” and “all peoples” to praise the Lord.
3. The Flow of the Psalm
Now let us look at the content of this psalm.
Verse 1: An Invitation for All Nations to Praise
Psalm 117 begins with a command.
“Praise the Lord, all nations. Praise Him, all peoples.”
The psalmist speaks not to one special nation or group, but to every nation. By placing the similar words “nations” and “peoples” together, he makes the invitation as wide as possible. The first truth is that all nations are invited to praise the Lord.
Verse 2: The Reason for Praise
Next, the psalmist explains the reason.
It is the Lord’s “steadfast love” and “faithfulness.” Steadfast love means His mercy that does not change. Faithfulness means that God is true and can always be trusted.
The psalmist does not find the reason for praise in human beings. The reason is the Lord’s own unchanging love and faithfulness. The psalm then ends with the words, “Praise the Lord.”
4. How to Read This Psalm
One question in this psalm is who “us” in verse 2 means.
One way to read it is to understand “us” as Israel. In that case, the nations see the Lord’s great love for Israel and are invited to praise that God.
Another way is to understand “us” more widely, including the nations as well as Israel. In that case, the nations also receive God’s love and are invited to praise the Lord together.
Because the text is so short, we cannot firmly choose only one view. Yet one truth remains the same in both readings. People praise because of the Lord’s steadfast love and faithfulness. This is the center of the psalm.
5. Message for Us Today
Psalm 117 does not focus on one person’s troubles or wishes. It gives us a wide view of the whole world.
In today’s world, we first notice differences in nation, people, culture, and ideas. It is important to understand these differences. Yet this psalm takes us one step further. The psalmist does not focus on human differences, but on the Lord who is over them all.
It is also important that the psalmist does not simply command, “Praise the Lord,” and stop there. He gives the reason for praise. That reason is the Lord’s steadfast love and faithfulness.
This psalm shows us that the foundation of praise is not found in human beings but in God. That is why this short poem of only two verses reaches out to the whole world. Psalm 117 invites all nations and quietly continues to say that the Lord’s steadfast love and faithfulness are the reason for praise. See you again tomorrow.
