- 忘れられていく出来事と、語り継がれる出来事
世の中には、時とともに忘れ去られてしまう出来事と、何世代にもわたって語り継がれていく出来事があります。同じように苦労を乗り越えた経験であっても、ただの思い出で終わるものがある一方で、人々の生き方の支えとなる記憶に変わるものも存在します。その違いは、どこにあるのでしょうか。
詩篇118篇は、苦しみの中で救われた経験を振り返る感謝の歌です。しかし、これは単なる個人の体験談ではありません。救いの記憶は共同体に共有され、神に感謝し礼拝をささげる詩となっています。
- 本篇の歴史的・文学的な背景
詩篇118篇は、詩篇113～118篇からなる「ハレル詩篇」の最後にあたる作品です。これらの詩篇は、ユダヤ人が過越祭などの大切な祭りで朗読してきました。そのため、この詩は共同体の礼拝の中で用いられたことを思わせる作品として理解されています。
また、詩篇118篇には、複数の人が応答しながら歌っているような特徴があります。冒頭では「イスラエル」「アロンの家」「主を恐れる者たち」と、呼びかけの対象が広がっていきます。後半では門をめぐるやりとりや、祝福の宣言が登場し、多くの人々が共に神を賛美している礼拝の場面を思い起こさせます。そのため、この詩は共に礼拝する場で歌われてきたと理解されています。
- 詩篇118篇の流れ
それでは、本篇の内容を順に見ていきましょう。
1～4節「感謝への招き」
詩は「主の恵みはとこしえまで」という言葉で始まります。まずイスラエルに呼びかけ、続いてアロンの家、さらに主を恐れるすべての人へと感謝の呼びかけが広がります。感謝は個人だけでなく、共同体全体で分かち合うものとして示されています。
5～18節「苦難から救いへ」
ここでは、語り手が自ら苦難の中で主に助けを求め、救われた経験を語っています。敵に取り囲まれる危機が何度も描かれますが、繰り返し強調されるのは「主は私の味方」という確かな信頼です。人や権力者に頼るのではなく、神こそが本当の拠り所であると語られています。
19～21節「感謝をもって門をくぐる」
救われた経験は、もはや一人の心の中だけに留まりません。語り手は感謝を携えて主の門へ向かい、その救いを礼拝の中で主に感謝します。
22～29節「逆転と共同体の賛美」
後半では「建てる者たちが捨てた石が、要の石となった」という有名な言葉が出てきます。これは、人々から価値がないと見なされたものを神が用い、逆転の恵みを与えられたことを表しています。その祝福にあずかる喜びから、礼拝の日を喜び、さらなる祝福を祈る歌となっています。そして、詩篇は最後に再び「主の恵みはとこしえまで」という言葉で締めくくられています。
- 詩篇118篇の読み方
この詩篇では、語り手が王なのか共同体の代表なのか、また「捨てられた石」が誰を指すのかについて、さまざまな意見があります。ただし、詩篇全体を見る時、最も大切なのはその特定ではありません。 大切なのは、苦難の中で経験した救いが感謝や礼拝へと結びついていく流れです。その理由の一つは、詩篇の構成にも現れています。1節と29節はどちらも「主の恵みはとこしえまで」という同じ言葉を告白しています。つまり、その間で語られる苦しみや救い、勝利のすべてが、変わらない神の恵みの中にあることを示しています。詩篇118篇の中心は、語り手がたたえる神の真実な愛と約束です。
- 現代の私たちへのメッセージ
私たちが出来事を振り返るとき、成功した人や優れたリーダーに注目しがちです。もちろん、人の努力や工夫も大事です。しかし、詩篇118篇は、人間の力や評価だけでは歴史を説明していません。苦難の中で救われた出来事も、人々に退けられたものが用いられた出来事も、主の恵みの中で理解しています。

【Season 6】Psalm 118 Explained Simply: When the Memory of Rescue Becomes Worship
1. Events That Are Forgotten and Events That Are Passed On
Some events are forgotten as time passes, while others are told from one generation to the next. People may go through similar hardships, yet one experience may remain only a memory, while another becomes a memory that supports the way people live. Where does this difference come from?
Psalm 118 is a song of thanks that looks back on rescue from suffering. Yet it is not only one person’s story. The memory of rescue is shared by the community and becomes a psalm of thanks and worship to God.
2. The Historical and Literary Background
Psalm 118 is the last of the Hallel Psalms, Psalms 113 to 118. Jewish people have read these psalms at Passover and other important festivals. For this reason, Psalm 118 is understood as a song used in the worship of the community.
Psalm 118 also sounds as if several voices answer one another. At the beginning, the call widens from Israel to the house of Aaron and then to all who fear the Lord. Later, there is an exchange at the gates and a declaration of blessing. These words bring to mind a worship scene in which many people praise God together. For this reason, the psalm is understood as a song used in shared worship.
3. The Flow of Psalm 118
Now let us follow the content of this psalm in order.
Verses 1 to 4: An Invitation to Give Thanks
The psalm begins with the words, “The Lord’s steadfast love lasts forever.” First Israel is called, then the house of Aaron, and finally all who fear the Lord. The invitation to give thanks keeps widening. Thanks is shown as something shared by the whole community, not kept by one person.
Verses 5 to 18: From Trouble to Rescue
Here the speaker tells how he called to the Lord in trouble and was rescued. The danger of being surrounded by enemies appears again and again. Yet the repeated message is the sure trust that the Lord is with him. The speaker says that God, not people or rulers, is the true place of safety.
Verses 19 to 21: Entering the Gates with Thanks
The rescue no longer stays inside one person’s heart. The speaker carries his thanks to the gates of the Lord and gives thanks for salvation in worship.
Verses 22 to 29: Reversal and the Praise of the Community
In the last part, we find the well-known words, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” This shows that God used what people saw as worthless and brought a gracious reversal. The people rejoice in that blessing, celebrate the day of worship, and pray for further blessing. The psalm then closes again with the words, “The Lord’s steadfast love lasts forever.”
4. How to Read Psalm 118
There are different views about whether the speaker is a king or a representative of the community, and about who the rejected stone means. Yet the most important point is not to identify these figures. The important movement is from rescue in suffering to thanks and worship. We can see this in the structure of the psalm. Both verse 1 and verse 29 confess, “The Lord’s steadfast love lasts forever.” The suffering, rescue, and victory between these verses all stand within God’s unchanging grace. At the center of Psalm 118 is the faithful love and promise of God praised by the speaker.
5. Message for Us Today
When we look back on events, we often focus on successful people or excellent leaders. Human effort and wise planning are important. Yet Psalm 118 does not explain history only through human power or human praise. It understands rescue from trouble and the use of what people rejected within the Lord’s grace.
This is a way of seeing history that cannot be explained by human strength alone. Psalm 118 asks how we receive the past. The same event can be told as a story of human success, or as a memory of grace that supported people behind the scenes. When we look back on our journey, what do we speak of first? Human effort and results, or the grace that kept supporting us? See you again tomorrow.
