Psalm 71: A Simple Explanation — Trusting the God Who Supports Us Through Life
- What Will Happen From Now On?
As we grow older, we may suddenly wonder, “Will I be all right from now on?” We cannot push ourselves as much as we used to, and the future may feel a little harder to see. Even in faith, we may think, “God has protected me until now, but will He continue to do the same?”
Psalm 71 is a prayer that touches exactly this kind of heart. A person who has been supported by God since youth now feels the reality of age and is placed in a dangerous situation. Even so, he continues to try to trust God.
- The Context of This Psalm
This psalm is not based on one specific event. It is often read as the prayer of a believer who has walked through a long life. This can be seen especially in verses 9 and 18.
There are also expressions that are similar to Psalm 31 and Psalm 22. This shows that prayers were passed down and used again by people of faith.
Within the book of Psalms, this psalm appears later and has the character of looking back over a whole life.
- The Flow of the Psalm
Now let us follow the flow of the psalm.
Verses 1–4, “Asking God for help,” show the speaker calling God his refuge in the middle of suffering and asking for help.
Verses 5–8, “Protection since youth,” look back on the past. The speaker remembers that God has supported him from birth.
Verses 9–13, “Crisis and enemies in old age,” show anxiety and the reality of enemies pressing in as the speaker grows old. A person of faith also feels weakness.
Verses 14–18, “Still continuing to hope,” show that even so, the speaker places hope in God and wants to tell the next generation about what he has experienced.
Verses 19–21, “Restoration from suffering,” remember how God has helped many times before. The speaker expresses confidence that God will raise him up again.
Verses 22–24, “Ending in praise,” close the prayer with praise to God.
- How to Read This Psalm
The center of this psalm is trust in God through the whole course of life. God’s protection in the past becomes support for the present, and that support leads to hope for the future.
In verse 20, the words about being “brought back to life” are best understood not mainly as a final resurrection at the end of time, but as the experience of being raised up again and again from deep suffering.
What is being spoken here is this kind of journey: “The God who has helped me until now is the God I will continue to trust from now on.”
- Message for Us Today
In other words, this psalm does not teach us to be strong by ourselves. It teaches us to depend on God throughout life.
It also encourages us to speak about the grace of God who has supported our lives. To tell others, in our own words, what God has done is an important role for those who have experienced Him.
If you grow older and feel anxious about the future, first look back on the path you have already walked. When you look there, trust can begin to grow: “God has helped me until now, and I can trust Him from now on.”
Then today, we can take another step and say, “Lord, I trust in You.” This is the encouragement Psalm 71 gives us.
See you again tomorrow.
