1．導入　大きな決断より、小さな選択

人生を左右するのは、大きな決断だと思うことがあります。進学、就職、結婚、転職。しかし実際には、それ以上に毎日の小さな選択が、私たちの歩みを形づくっています。

どんな言葉を口にするのか。与えられた仕事にどう向き合うのか。人の過ちをどう扱うのか。箴言10章は、知恵と愚かさの違いが、そうした日常の細部に現れることを教えています。

2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈

10章から、箴言は新しい段階に入ります。「ソロモンの箴言」という表題のもと、1～9章の長い教えから、短い格言集へと形式が変わります。

この章では、「正しい人」と「悪しき者」、「知恵のある者」と「愚かな者」が繰り返し対比されます。これは善人と悪人を単純に分類するというより、二つの生き方の方向性を示したものです。

多くの格言は、人生に見られる一般的な原則を語っています。絶対的な保証ではなく、神が造られた世界で通常に見られる道理というべきものを示しているのです。

「口」「唇」「舌」といった言葉に関する表現が多いことも、この章の特徴です。

3．本章の流れ

では、本章の内容を見ていきましょう。

1～5節「知恵と勤勉さ」

章は、「知恵のある子は父を喜ばせ、愚かな子は母の悲しみとなる」という言葉で始まります。続いて、「不義によって得た財宝」と「義のわざ」、無精者の手と勤勉な者の手が対比されます。「夏のうちに集める者は賢い子」と語られ、時にかなった働きの大切さが示されます。

6～14節「言葉と人格」

「正しい人の口はいのちの泉」と語られ、言葉が人の内面を映し出すものとして描かれます。知恵のある者は知識を蓄え、命令を受け入れます。一方、愚かな者の口には滅びが迫ります。

15～22節「富と祝福」

「富む者の財産はその人の堅固な城」と語られます。しかし同時に、「人を富ませるのは主の祝福」とも語られます。箴言は財産の力を否定しませんが、それを与えてくださるのも神の祝福であると明言しています。

23～32節「正しい人と悪しき者の行き着く先」

正しい人の望みは喜びに至り、「主の道は、誠実な人には砦」と語られます。一方、悪しき者の期待は消え失せます。最後まで両者の対比が続き、人生の方向性の違いが描かれます。

4．本章の読み方

この章を読むときに大切なのは、箴言を成功法則集として読まないことです。

たとえば、「勤勉な者の手は人を富ませる」「主への恐れは日数を増やす」といった言葉は、努力すれば必ず裕福になり、信仰深ければ必ず長生きするという機械的な約束ではありません。箴言が語っているのは、この世界に神が置かれた基本的な秩序です。

また、この章の重心は、結果そのものではなく人格にあります。富、名声、長寿といった目に見える結果よりも、誠実に歩み、訓戒を受け入れ、正しい言葉を語る人の姿が繰り返し描かれています。

つまり箴言10章は、「どうすれば成功できるか」よりも、「どのような人として歩むのか」を問いかけているのです。

5．私たちへのメッセージ

私たちは、大きな出来事ばかりに目を向けがちです。しかし、箴言10章が注目するのは、もっと日常的な事柄です。仕事への姿勢、語る言葉、人との接し方、お金との向き合い方。その積み重ねの中に、知恵も愚かさも現れます。

日本には、「塵も積もれば山となる」ということわざがあります。小さな積み重ねが大きな結果を生むという意味です。箴言10章も同じように、人生の方向は毎日の選択の中で形づくられていくことを示しています。ただし、その土台にあるのは人間の努力への信頼ではなく、主の前に誠実に歩もうとする姿勢です。

今日の私たちも、自分の人生全体を変えようと焦る必要はありません。まずは、目の前の一つの言葉、一つの行動、一つの選択において、知恵に耳を傾けることから始められます。その小さな歩みを通して、私たちも主が示される道を共に歩んでいきましょう。

[Season 6] Proverbs 10: Where Does Wisdom Appear in Daily Life?

1. Introduction: Small Choices Matter More Than Big Decisions

We may think that major decisions shape our lives: education, employment, marriage, or changing jobs. In reality, our daily small choices shape our path even more.

What words will we speak? How will we approach our work? How will we handle another person’s mistake? Proverbs 10 teaches that wisdom and foolishness appear in these everyday details.

2. The Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter

Proverbs enters a new stage in chapter 10. Under the heading “The Proverbs of Solomon,” the long teachings of chapters 1–9 change into a collection of short sayings.

This chapter repeatedly contrasts the righteous and the wicked, and the wise and the foolish. It does not simply divide people into good and bad groups; it shows two directions for life.

Many of the sayings express general principles seen in life. They are not absolute guarantees, but describe the order ordinarily observed in the world God created.

The chapter also gives special attention to words, using terms such as mouth, lips, and tongue.

3. The Flow of This Chapter

Now let us look at the chapter.

Verses 1–5: Wisdom and Diligence

The chapter begins, “A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.” It then contrasts dishonest gain with righteousness, and laziness with diligence. The words “He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son” show the importance of working at the proper time.

Verses 6–14: Words and Character

The mouth of the righteous is called a fountain of life, and words are portrayed as revealing a person’s inner character. The wise store up knowledge and accept commands, while ruin draws near to the mouth of the fool.

Verses 15–22: Wealth and Blessing

Wealth is described as a “fortified city.” At the same time, the chapter declares that “the blessing of the Lord brings wealth.” Proverbs does not deny the power of possessions, but it clearly states that what gives wealth is God’s blessing.

Verses 23–32: The Destinations of the Righteous and the Wicked

The hope of the righteous leads to joy, and “the way of the Lord is a refuge for the blameless.” By contrast, the expectations of the wicked come to nothing. The contrast continues to the end, portraying two different directions in life.

4. How to Read This Chapter

We should not read Proverbs as a collection of guaranteed success formulas.

For example, statements such as “diligent hands bring wealth” and “the fear of the Lord adds length to life” are not mechanical promises that hard work will always make a person rich or that deep faith will always guarantee a long life. Proverbs is describing the basic order God has placed in the world.

The main focus is also character, not results. More than visible outcomes such as wealth, fame, or long life, the chapter repeatedly shows a person who walks honestly, receives correction, and speaks rightly.

In other words, Proverbs 10 asks not, “How can we succeed?” but, “What kind of people will we be as we walk through life?”

5. A Message for Us

We tend to focus only on major events. Yet Proverbs 10 draws our attention to more ordinary matters: our attitude toward work, the words we speak, the way we treat people, and how we relate to money. Wisdom and foolishness both appear in the accumulation of these daily choices.

A Japanese proverb says, “Even dust, when piled up, becomes a mountain.” It means that small accumulations produce large results. Proverbs 10 likewise shows that the direction of a life is formed through daily choices. Its foundation, however, is not trust in human effort, but the desire to walk faithfully before the Lord.

We do not need to focus on changing our entire life at once. We can begin by listening to wisdom in the one word, one action, and one choice before us. Through these small steps, let us walk together on the path the Lord shows us.
