1．似た声でも、行き先は同じではない

私たちは毎日、多くの声に囲まれて生きています。耳を傾けたくなる助言もあれば、行ってみたくなる誘いもあります。しかし、その場ではよいことのように見えても、行き着く先が期待どおりとは限りません。箴言9章は、「どの声に耳を傾けるのか」という問いを私たちに投げかけています。

2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈

箴言1～9章は、知恵を人格的な存在として描く長い導入部です。9章は、その締めくくりに当たります。

知恵と愚かさは、ともに女性として描かれています。これは実在の人物ではなく、生き方の違いを印象的に示すための表現です。

本章は、この女性たちが開く二つの宴を対比させる構造になっています。似たような招きが語られますが、結末は正反対です。

また、10節の「主を恐れることは知恵の初め」は、箴言全体の中心テーマを改めて確認する言葉です。

3．本章の流れ

では、本章の内容を見てまいりましょう。

1～6節「知恵の宴への招き」

知恵は「自分の家を建て」「その食卓も整え」、町の高い所から「浅はかな者はみな、ここに来なさい」と招きます。その目的は、「生きなさい」と呼びかけることにあります。

7～12節「知恵を受け入れる人と拒む人」

嘲る者は戒めを退けますが、知恵のある者は教えを受けて成長します。そして、「主を恐れることは知恵の初め」と語られます。

13～18節「愚かな女の招き」

愚かな女も高い場所から、「浅はかな者はみな、ここに来なさい」と呼びかけます。しかし、その先には「よみの深み」が待っています。

4．本章の読み方

この章の重心は、知恵と愚かさの対比そのものではありません。どちらの招きに応えるのかという決断にあります。

注目すべきなのは、両者が同じ「浅はかな者」に呼びかけている点です。問題は、知識の量ではありません。呼びかけに応え、教えを受け入れる心を持つかどうかです。

また、本章は単なる成功の秘訣を語っているのでもありません。「主を恐れることは知恵の初め」とあるように、知恵の出発点は、神を神として認めることにあります。

5．私たちへのメッセージ

私たちは、目先の魅力や分かりやすい利益を基準に、物事を進めたくなります。しかし、箴言9章は、「その道はどこへ続いているのか」と問い直します。

知恵も愚かさも、魅力的な言葉で人を招きます。とりわけ愚かさは、手軽さや秘密の甘さによって心を引きつけます。しかし、似て見える入口の先には、いのちと死という正反対の結末があります。だからこそ聖書は、今の気分で物事を決めず、その先にある実りを見るよう促しています。

大切なのは、「主を恐れることは知恵の初め」という原点に立ち返ることです。今日、私たちはどの声に耳を傾けているでしょうか。共に御言葉に聞きながら、いのちへ向かう道を選び取っていきましょう。

[Season 6] Proverbs 9: Two Invitations—Which One Will You Answer?

1. Introduction: Similar Voices Do Not Lead to the Same Place

Every day, many voices surround us. Some advice makes us want to listen, and some invitations make us want to respond. Yet even when something looks good at the moment, it may not lead where we expect. Proverbs 9 confronts us with the question, “Which voice will we listen to?”

2. The Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter

Proverbs 1–9 forms a long introduction that presents wisdom as a person. Chapter 9 brings this section to a close.

Wisdom and foolishness are both pictured as women. They are not actual people, but vivid pictures of two different ways of life.

The chapter contrasts two feasts. Their invitations sound similar, but their final results are completely different.

Verse 10, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” restates the central theme of Proverbs.

3. The Flow of This Chapter

Now let us look at the chapter.

Verses 1–6: The Invitation to Wisdom’s Feast

Wisdom “has built her house” and “prepared her table,” and from the highest point of the city she calls, “Let all who are simple come in here.” Her invitation is a call to leave foolishness behind and walk on the path that leads to life.

Verses 7–12: Those Who Accept or Reject Wisdom

Mockers reject correction, but wise people accept teaching and grow. Then we hear, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

Verses 13–18: The Invitation of the Foolish Woman

The foolish woman also calls from a high place, “Let all who are simple come in here.” Yet beyond her invitation lie the depths of Sheol.

4. How to Read This Chapter

The chapter’s center is not only the contrast between wisdom and foolishness, but the decision about which invitation we will answer.

Both call to the same simple people. The issue is not how much knowledge a person has, but whether that person has a heart willing to receive instruction.

This chapter is not merely a guide to success. Because the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, wisdom starts by recognizing God as God.

5. A Message for Us

We are often tempted to make decisions by immediate attraction or obvious benefit. Yet Proverbs 9 asks us to reconsider: “Where does this path lead?”

Both Wisdom and Folly invite people with attractive words. Folly, in particular, draws the heart with ease and the sweetness of secrecy. Yet beyond entrances that may look alike lie opposite destinations: life and death. Scripture therefore urges us not to decide by the feeling of the moment, but to look at the fruit that lies ahead.

What matters is returning to the starting point: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Which voice are we listening to today? As we listen to God’s Word together, let us choose the path that leads toward life.
