「不正をただすリーダー」や「改革の英雄」が活躍するドラマを見ると、私たちは胸を熱くすることがあります。しかし、聖書はさらに深い視点を示しています。それは、単なる勇気だけでなく、秩序や契約に立ち返ることこそが本当の改革を生むのだということです。今日取り上げる歴代誌第二23章は、その最たる例です。
物語の舞台は混乱のさなかにあります。アタルヤが王家を皆殺しにし、権力を握ったことで、国は恐怖政治に支配されていました。そんな状況の中、祭司エホヤダが立ち上がります。けれども、彼の行動はただ勇敢だっただけではありません。この物語には、私たちの人生にも響く大切なメッセージが込められています。
２．本章の位置づけと構成
この章は、歴代誌の中で「礼拝の秩序回復」を描く重要な場面です。捕囚から戻ってきた人々にとって、神殿を中心とした信仰生活を再建することは大きな課題でした。エホヤダの行いは、その模範として描かれます。章は次の三つの段階に分かれています。
1）準備と戴冠（23:1–11）
エホヤダは「自らを強くし」、百人隊長やレビ人を集めて結束します。彼らは契約を交わし、宮の守りを固めました。やがてヨアシュ王子を公にし、王冠を授け、油を注ぎます。ここで大事なのは、王に「さとしの書」が渡されたことです。これは王位の証となるだけでなく、律法の書として、王権が神の言葉のもとにあることを示しています。シナイ契約や十戒・律法を守る義務を王に課し、南王国ユダの伝統を維持し再興しようとするものです。
2）アタルヤの排除（23:12–15）
アタルヤは「反逆だ！」と叫びますが、彼女は宮の外で処刑されます。これは、聖なる場所である宮をけがさないためです。秩序を乱す者を取り除くことが、礼拝の純粋さを守るために必要だったのです。
3）契約と礼拝再建（23:16–21）
ここが物語の頂点です。エホヤダは「神と王と民との契約」を新たに結びます。その後、バアル神殿は取り壊され、祭司とレビ人たちがモーセの律法に従って奉仕を始めます。門衛も配置され、町には平和が戻りました。こうして、礼拝の秩序が回復したのです。
３．最初の読者へのメッセージ
捕囚後に生きた人々は、壊れた秩序をどのように立て直すかに悩んでいました。この章は、単なる「権力争い」ではなく「社会秩序の回復」に重点を置いて描かれています。アタルヤによる恐怖政治の問題は、偶像礼拝を広め、神殿の秩序を破壊し、神の民としてのアイデンティティを失わせたことにありました。つまり、神と神の民との契約を壊した点に本質があったのです。だからこそ、物語は「奮い立つ勇気」だけでなく、「契約への回帰」に焦点を合わせます。エホヤダの行動は自分のためではなく、神の秩序を取り戻すためのものでした。王権は神の言葉のもとにあり、王も民も律法によって導かれるべきだということを再認識させ、礼拝を生活の中心に据えることが改革の柱だったのです。
４．現代の私たちへのススメ
私たちの社会や職場、身近な人間関係でも「秩序が乱れる瞬間」は起こります。人間関係のもつれ、職場での権力争い、不正、あるいは組織の混乱など、さまざまな問題が生じます。こうした時に大切なのは「誰がトップになるか」だけではありません。本当に問われているのは、壊れた正義や価値観をどう立て直すか、ということです。だからこそ、改革に必要なのは「奮い立つ勇気」だけではなく、人間にとって普遍的な真理を示す神の言葉と契約に立ち返ることです。また、神との関係を正すことも大切です。神の戒めに耳を傾け、人や社会が本来どのようであるべきかを考えることが、秩序と平和を取り戻す道になります。今日、あなたがいる場所で秩序を取り戻すためにできることを、一歩だけでも始めてみてください。それでは、また明日お会いしましょう。
2 Chronicles 23 – The Fall of Athaliah
1. Not Just Courage
When we watch dramas about “leaders who fight injustice” or “heroes of reform,” we often feel inspired. But the Bible shows us something deeper: real reform comes not only from courage but from returning to order and covenant. Today’s passage, 2 Chronicles 23, is a clear example.
The story takes place in a time of chaos. Athaliah killed the royal family and took power, and the nation was under a reign of terror. In this situation, the priest Jehoiada stood up. But his action was not just brave. This story carries an important message for our lives too.
2. The Position and Structure of This Chapter
This chapter is a key scene in Chronicles, showing the restoration of worship order. For the people who returned from exile, rebuilding a life of faith centered on the temple was a big challenge. Jehoiada’s actions are shown as a model. The chapter has three parts:
(1) Preparation and Coronation (23:1–11)
Jehoiada “strengthened himself” and gathered the commanders and Levites. They made a covenant and secured the temple. Then Joash was presented, crowned, and anointed. The important point is that the king received “the testimony.” This was not just a royal document but the book of the Law, showing that the king was under God’s Word. It reminded him of the Sinai covenant and the duty to keep the Law.
(2) Removal of Athaliah (23:12–15)
Athaliah shouted, “Treason!” but she was executed outside the temple to keep the holy place pure. Removing what destroys order was necessary to protect true worship.
(3) Covenant and Restoration of Worship (23:16–21)
This is the climax. Jehoiada made a covenant between God, the king, and the people. Then the temple of Baal was torn down, and priests and Levites began serving according to the Law of Moses. Gatekeepers were appointed, and peace returned to the city. Worship order was restored.
3. Message for the First Readers
After the exile, people struggled to rebuild broken order. This chapter focuses not on “power struggle” but on “restoring social order.” Athaliah’s rule spread idol worship, destroyed temple order, and shook the identity of God’s people. In short, it broke the covenant between God and His people. So this story calls not only for courage but for returning to the covenant. Jehoiada acted not for himself but to restore God’s order. The king was under God’s Word, and both king and people were guided by the Law. Worship at the center of life was the pillar of reform.
4. Application for Us Today
In our society, workplaces, and relationships, there are moments when order breaks down—conflicts, power struggles, injustice, or organizational chaos. At such times, the question is not “Who will be the leader?” but “How can broken justice and values be restored?” Reform needs more than courage. We must return to God’s Word and covenant, correct our relationship with God, and listen to His commands. Thinking about how people and society should be is the way to restore order and peace.
