クーデターによって王が倒され、王家の血筋を守るために赤ちゃんが宮殿の一室にひっそりと隠される――。まるで映画の予告編のような出来事が、実際に聖書の中で起こりました。国家の陰謀と神の導きがぶつかり合うのです。今回は、歴代誌第二22章を取り上げ、「絶望の中に隠された希望」について一緒に考えていきましょう。
2．本章の位置づけと構造
歴代誌は、バビロン捕囚から帰還した人々に向けて書かれています。その目的は、ダビデ契約と神殿礼拝の大切さを改めて伝えることです。22章では、南ユダ王国の王アハズヤと、その母アタルヤの物語が描かれています。章の流れは次のとおりです。
22:1–2 アハズヤの即位（「42歳」と記されていますが、実際は写本の違いによるもので、本来は22歳と考えられています）
22:3–6 母アタルヤと北イスラエルのアハブ家の影響を受けるアハズヤ
22:7–9 エフーのクーデターに巻き込まれ、アハズヤは命を落とします
22:10–12 アタルヤが王族を皆殺しにしようとしますが、妹エホシェバが赤ちゃんだったヨアシュを神殿にかくまい、その命を守ります
3．最初の読者へのメッセージ
では、この内容はバビロン捕囚から帰った人々に、どんなメッセージとなったのでしょうか。彼らは一度国を失うという苦い経験を持っていました。心から神を求めていたヨシャパテ王が亡くなると、その後を継いだヨラム、アハズヤの時代には、神を求める心が薄れていきます。「神の契約は本当にまだ残っているのか？」という不安が広がるなか、この物語が語られたのです。歴代誌の著者はこう伝えます。「人間の悪意や権力争いがどんなに激しくなっても、神の契約は決して絶たれない」。アハズヤの死やアタルヤの残虐な行動も、神の計画を壊すことはできませんでした。ヨアシュというひとりの幼い命が守られ、ダビデの家系は続いていったのです。
ここでは、二つの対比に注目できます。一つ目は「悪い助言」です。アハズヤは若い王だったため、母アタルヤやその実家であるアハブ家の影響を強く受け、やがて神を恐れぬ道に進んでしまいました。その結果、彼はクーデターに巻き込まれて短い生涯を終えることとなります。聖書はこれを、「神から出たこと」だと記しています（7節）。
二つ目は「信仰の行動」です。エホシェバと祭司の家系の人々は、身の危険を冒しながらヨアシュを守ろうとしました。その信じる心による小さな行動が、後の歴史を大きく変える出来事につながったのです。最初の読者たちは、この短い章を通して、信仰による行動が将来にどんな影響をもたらすかを考えさせられました。
4．現代へのススメ
では、この物語は現代の私たちに何を語っているのでしょうか。
まず第一に、神の約束を信じることの大切さです。どんなに目の前の状況が暗く見えても、神が約束されたことは必ず守られます。歴代誌は、ダビデ王家が何度もの粛清の危機（21:4、22:1、8、10）に襲われても、その家系が保たれてきたことを伝えています。神がダビデ家と交わした契約は破られませんでした。一見、偶然のように思える出来事も、神の導きの中で意味を持っているのです。
私たちも、ときには自分の思い通りにならない社会や、力のある人々による不条理のなかで生きることがあります。しかし、神の契約に信頼し、祈り、行動すれば、必ずその忠実さが報われると信じてよいのです。あなたの小さな誠実な行動が、将来を大きく変えるかもしれません。大切なのは、ただ勇気を出して行動するのではなく、神の約束を信じて踏み出すことです。
次に、どんな声に耳を傾けるかが重要です。アハズヤが破滅したのは、悪い助言を聞き入れてしまったことが始まりでした。私たちも、どの声に注意を向けるかで人生が大きく変わります。SNSや周囲の意見、自分を持ち上げる言葉に踊らされるのではなく、聖書の言葉に耳を傾ける習慣を持ちましょう。
歴代誌第二22章は、暗闇の中で希望を守った人々を描いた物語です。エホシェバの勇気や祭司家の忠実さ、そして神の見えざる手。そのすべてが、私たちに「望みがない状況でも信じ続ける心」を教えてくれます。

2 Chronicles Chapter 22 – Hidden Hope in Darkness
1. Like a Movie Trailer
A king is overthrown in a coup. To protect the royal bloodline, a baby is secretly hidden in a palace room. Sounds like a movie trailer, doesn’t it? But this really happened in the Bible. National intrigue and God’s guidance collide. Today, we look at 2 Chronicles 22 and think about “Hope Hidden in Despair.”
2. The Chapter’s Place and Structure
Chronicles was written for people returning from Babylonian exile. Its purpose was to remind them of the importance of the Davidic covenant and temple worship. Chapter 22 tells the story of King Ahaziah of Judah and his mother Athaliah. Here’s the flow:
- 22:1–2 Ahaziah becomes king (the text says “42 years old,” but due to manuscript differences, it is understood as 22 years old).
- 22:3–6 Ahaziah is influenced by his mother Athaliah and the house of Ahab in Israel.
- 22:7–9 Ahaziah is caught in Jehu’s coup and dies.
- 22:10–12 Athaliah kills the royal family, but Ahaziah’s sister Jehosheba hides baby Joash in the temple and saves his life.
This short chapter is full of fear and hope.
3. Message for the First Readers
What did this mean for people who had returned from exile? They had lost their nation once. After godly King Jehoshaphat died, his successors Jehoram and Ahaziah turned away from God. People wondered, “Is God’s covenant still alive?” The writer says: “Human evil and power struggles can never break God’s covenant.” Neither Ahaziah’s death nor Athaliah’s cruelty stopped God’s plan. Joash’s life was saved, and David’s line continued.
Notice two contrasts:
First, bad advice. Ahaziah was young and listened to his mother and Ahab’s family. He walked away from God and ended his life in tragedy. The Bible says this happened “by God’s will” (v.7).
Second, faith in action. Jehosheba and the priests risked their lives to protect Joash. Their small act of faith changed history. The first readers learned that faith expressed in action can shape the future.
4. A Word for Us Today
What does this story say to us?
First, trust God’s promises. Even when life looks dark, God keeps His word. Chronicles shows that even after repeated threats (21:4; 22:1,8,10), David’s line survived. What seems like chance is part of God’s plan.
We also face unfair systems and powerful people. But if we trust God’s covenant, pray, and act, our faithfulness will not be wasted. Your small act of obedience may change the future. The key is not just courage, but stepping forward because you believe God’s promise.
Second, guard the voices you listen to. Ahaziah fell because he listened to bad advice. We too are shaped by the voices we follow. Don’t be swayed by social media or flattering words. Make it a habit to listen to God’s Word.
2 Chronicles 22 is a story of people who kept hope alive in darkness—Jehosheba’s courage, the priests’ loyalty, and God’s unseen hand. It teaches us to keep believing even when hope seems gone.
