朝、決まった時間に同じ椅子に座り、同じように一日を始める。このような小さなルーティンを、多くの人が持っています。忙しい毎日の中で、その時間と場所だけは崩したくないという「自分の居場所」の感覚があるからです。
詩篇15篇は、「人はどこに身を置いて生きるのか」という問いを投げかけます。それは、神との関係に根ざした問いです。神の前に立ち、その場にとどまれるのはどのような人なのか。私たちの日々の感覚とも無関係ではないテーマが、ここから始まります。
2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈
詩篇15篇は「ダビデの詩」とされ、詩篇第1巻（1–41篇）に含まれています。文学的には、詩篇24篇とともに「聖所入場詩」というタイプに分類され、神のそばに近づく資格について問う詩です。
注目すべきは、儀式や身分よりも、日々の生き方が問われている点です。古代近東の神殿文書では、身分や儀礼の正しさが重視されましたが、詩篇15篇は、日々の生き方そのものを資格として語ります。礼拝と生活が分けられない世界観が息づいているのです。
3．本篇の流れ
では、詩篇15篇の流れを見ていきましょう。
1節「だれが主のもとに住めるのか」礼拝の入口で問いが投げかけられます。一時的に神のそばに行くだけでなく、そこで暮らし続けられるのはどんな人か、という鋭い質問です。
2–3節「人格と言葉が試される」ことが答えとして示されます。誠実に生きる姿や、心と行動が一致していること。さらに、舌の使い方も重視されており、中傷や噂話で人間関係を壊さない慎み深さが強調されます。
4節「何を価値あるものとするか」神を恐れて生きることを大切にし、それ以外を魅力的とは評価しない姿勢です。また、不利になっても約束を守る誠実さも語られます。
5節「揺るがされない結末」お金によって人を苦しめないことが確認され、最後に「このような人は揺るがされない」と結ばれます。それは、神との契約関係の中で、その立ち位置が崩れないという確かさです。
4．本章の読み方
この詩は、伝統的に「神に喜ばれる生き方のチェックリスト」のように読まれてきました。神礼拝と日々の生き方の倫理をつなげる詩として、大切にされてきたことは確かです。
しかし、そのような受け止め方は、ときにこの詩を信仰生活の合格基準にしてしまい、律法主義に陥る危険もはらんでいます。ここで語られる内容は、具体的な基準ではなく、人生の方向性を示したものです。今どこまで到達しているかを問うのではなく、これからどこに向かうのかを考える、未来に目を向けた教えといえます。「問いと答えの形式」をとりながら、詩人は、共同体が共有すべき生き方を確認しようとしているのです。
5．現代の私たちに対する適用
私たちもまた、日々どこに身を置き、どのように生きるかを選びながら1日を始めます。詩篇15篇は、「神の前に立つ」とは特別な儀式のことではなく、日常の言葉や約束、お金の使い方などに表れると教えています。
神の臨在は、生活から切り離された場所にあるのではなく、毎日の生活のなかで築かれていくものです。

1. When a Morning Routine Begins to Ask a Question
Many people start their day in the same way. You sit in the same chair, at the same time, and begin your morning. In a busy life, that small routine can feel like a place you want to protect. It gives a sense of where you belong.
Psalm 15 raises a deeper question behind that feeling. Where do we place ourselves in life? This question is rooted in our relationship with God. What kind of person can stand before God and remain there? This psalm begins with a theme that is closely connected to our everyday experience.
2. Historical and Literary Background
Psalm 15 is described as a psalm of David and belongs to Book One of the Psalms (Psalms 1–41). In literary terms, it is grouped with Psalm 24 as an “entrance psalm.” These psalms ask who may come near to God and remain in God’s presence.
What is important is that this psalm does not focus on rituals or social position. Instead, it focuses on daily life. In many ancient temple texts, status or correct ceremonies were central. Psalm 15 is different. It speaks about everyday actions and character as what matters before God.
Worship and daily life are not separated here. The psalm reflects a view of faith where how we live and how we worship belong together.
3. The Flow of the Psalm
Let us follow the movement of Psalm 15.
Verse 1 asks the question at the entrance of worship. Who may dwell with the Lord? This is not about visiting God for a moment. It asks who can live in God’s presence and stay there.
Verses 2–3 describe the answer in terms of character and speech. Living with integrity, acting honestly, and having consistency between heart and actions are emphasized. How we use our words matters as well. The psalm stresses restraint—from slander, gossip, or speech that harms others.
Verse 4 asks what we treat as truly valuable. Reverence for the Lord shapes our choices. The psalm also highlights faithfulness—keeping promises even when doing so brings disadvantages.
Verse 5 speaks about how we treat others, especially in matters of money and power. It ends with a strong conclusion: a person who lives this way will not be shaken. This stability comes from a secure place within a covenant relationship with God.
4. How This Psalm Has Often Been Read
Traditionally, Psalm 15 has been read like a checklist of how to live in a way that pleases God. It has helped many people connect worship with everyday ethics, and that is an important strength of this psalm.
At the same time, this way of reading can turn the psalm into a standard to pass or fail. That can lead to legalism. When we look carefully at the context, the psalm is not giving a scorecard. It is pointing to a direction in life.
The question is not how far we have already reached, but where we are heading. Through its question-and-answer form, the psalm invites the community to reflect together on the kind of life they are choosing.
5. What This Means for Us Today
Each day, we also decide where to place ourselves and how to live. Psalm 15 teaches that standing before God is not about special ceremonies. It shows itself in ordinary things—our words, our promises, and how we handle money and relationships.
God’s presence is not found only in a separate sacred space. It is formed and experienced within daily life.
