１．ハガイ書の背景
１節、ダリヨス王の第二年、それは西暦にするとBC520年です。第六の月は、太陽暦では8～9月に相当。その一日、イスラエルの民は、預言者ハガイが語る神のことばを耳にするのです。この時、既にバビロン捕囚は終わっており、総督ゼルバベルや大祭司ヨシュアという指導者たちに率いられて約5万人のイスラエル人がエルサレムに戻っていました（BC536年）。それから16年、BC520年にこの預言は語られました。
総督ゼルバベルは、BC597年バビロンへ捕虜となって連れていかれた王エホヤキンの孫にあたります。明らかにダビデ王家の継承者です。総督ゼルバベル、そしてヨシュアの指導によって、イスラエル人は帰還後、直ぐに神殿の再建に取り掛かっています。しかし、彼らが長く不在であった期間に住み着いた人々から、様々な妨害を受け、神殿再建の工事は、土台を据えると、長らく中断されたままになってしまっていたのです。もはや、何の進展もないままに、時は過ぎ去り、いつしか人々は神殿再建に対する関心も失い、自分たちが住む家を建てることに熱中し始めていました。
かつてエゼキエルによって詳しく語られた新しい神殿の幻も、時の経過とともに、それは、近々に達成できるものではなくて、終末的、理想的なもの、やがて来たる新しい天と地のお話と受け止められるようになっていたのかもしれません（2節）。実際彼らの関心は、再び住み着いたこの地でどのように生き延びていくかでした。そして、自分の生活のことで一杯の今、神殿のことまでは考えられないというわけです。
２．あなた方の歩みをよく考えよ
そのようなイスラエルの人々に、ハガイは語り掛けるのです。4節「この宮が廃墟となっているのに、あなたがただけが板張りの家に住むべき時であろうか」神の哀れみがあって、私たちはこうやってエルサレムに戻ってきたのではないか。こうやって国を再建するチャンスを与えられているのではないのか。それなのに、どうして、神よりも自分のことを優先するのか？ハガイのメッセージは、非常に現代的なメッセージでもあるのです。つまり言ってみれば、神あっての今の私たちの生活なのに、どうして神を後回しにするのか、自分の生活のことばかり考えて、教会のことを考えようとしないのか。こんなに教会が瀕死の状況にありながら、どうして皆で教会のことを考えて、神に祈り、共に力を合わせて立ち上がろうとしないのか、と言うわけです。
5節「あなた方の歩みをよく考えよ」と言います。6節はその歩みについて語っています。つまり一生懸命働いているわりには、満足を見出すことができないでいる。稼いだお金は空しく消えていく。だからもっとどうしたらお金を稼げるか、どうしたらもっと楽な生活ができるかと考える、そしてうまくいかない。その悪循環から抜け出せない。なぜそんな空回りの人生になってしまうのか？よく考えよ、と繰り返されます。そして思い浮かぶことは、神の国と義を第一にしていない、という歩みではないでしょうか。イエスは、天の父が、私たちに必要なことは知っておられる、神の国と義を第一にすれば、必要なものはすべて備えられると語られました（マタイ6:33）。第一にすべきものを第一にしていない歩みがあるのではないか、ということです。
人の人生の成功も失敗も、繁栄も没落も、皆、神様次第である。その神をないがしろにするなら、そこに空回りの人生が生じるのも当然ではないか、と言うことです（詩篇127:1）。
12節から、ハガイの鋭い指摘に対するイスラエル人の応答が描かれています。彼らは、ハガイの言葉に聴き従って、主に恐れを抱いたとされます。素直に神のことばを受け入れ、神を人生の軸にしっかり据えた歩みをさせていただきましょう。では今日もよき一日となるように祈ります。

Book of Haggai Chapter 1: Rebuild the Temple

Verse 1, the second year of King Darios, in the Western calendar, that would be 520 BC. The sixth month corresponds to August or September in the solar calendar. On that one day, the Israelites heard the word of God spoken by the prophet Haggai. At this time, the Babylonian captivity had already ended, and about 50,000 Israelites, led by their leaders Zerubbabel the governor and Joshua the high priest, had returned to Jerusalem (536 BC). The prophecy was spoken 16 years later, in 520 BC.
Zerubbabel the governor was the grandson of Jehoiachin, who was taken captive to Babylon in 597 BC. He is clearly the heir of the Davidic royal family. Under the leadership of Zerubbabel and Joshua, the Israelites began to rebuild the temple immediately after their return. However, the work of rebuilding the temple had long been halted after the foundation was laid due to various obstructions from the people who had settled in the area during their long absence. Time passed without any further action, and soon the people lost interest in the rebuilding of the temple and became preoccupied with building their own homes.
In fact, the vision of the rebuilding of the temple had been revealed in detail by Ezekiel, but over time it may have come to seem like an apocalyptic, idealistic, even spiritual rebuilding of the temple. In fact, they had to survive in the land they had re-inhabited. It might be the equivalent of thinking that they were too occupied with their own lives to even think about the church. They were not thinking about verse 2, “The time has not yet come. They thought, “The time to build the temple of the Lord is.
2. consider your steps carefully.
From verse 4, the prophecy is addressed to God’s people as a whole. To put it bluntly, we are what we are because of God, and we are what we are now because of the church, but you are putting God and the church on the back burner, not being mindful of the poor church, and thinking only of making your own house luxurious, Is this what you want to do? Haggai’s message is a very contemporary message.
Verse 5 says, “Consider your steps,” and verse 6 talks about those steps. In other words, in spite of working hard, you are not finding satisfaction. The money you earn disappears in vain. Why such an empty life? Think about it, he repeats. And what comes to mind is the walk of not putting the Kingdom of God and righteousness first. Jesus told us that our heavenly Father knows what we need, and that if we put God’s kingdom and righteousness first, He will provide everything we need (Matthew 6:33). This means that there may be a walk in which we are not putting first what should be first.
The success or failure, prosperity or downfall of a person’s life all depends on God. If one neglects that God, is it not natural that a life of vacillation will arise there (Ps. 127:1)?
Beginning in verse 12, we see the response of the Israelites to these words of Haggai. They are said to have listened to and obeyed Haggai’s words and to have feared the Lord. Not remembering God and being busy with one’s own affairs is also unbelief, and should be called the sin of idolatry. Let us walk as God’s people with God firmly established as the axis of our lives.
