1．神の知恵を求める（1:1-11）
キリスト教はエルサレム、つまりユダヤ人の社会から生まれました。そしてまもなく、イエスをメシヤ、救い主とするその信仰は、ユダヤ人の社会から迫害されるようになるのです。この迫害は、さらにエルサレムの外に住んでいる、ユダヤ人にも拡大していきました。
そこで、この手紙を書いたのは、イエスの弟、ヤコブと考えられていますが、ヤコブは、迫害にさらされていたユダヤ人クリスチャンに対して励ましの手紙を書き送るのです。
まず始めに、忍耐を働かせなさいと言います。試練は、信仰を成熟させるものだから、むしろ、喜ぶべきことであると言います。そして試練を乗り越えるために知恵を持つように教えるのです。知恵は、試練の中で、人をいたずらに凹ませたり、腐り果てたりさせず、試練の先に目を向けさせ、前向きに生きていくことを可能にするのです。ですから、あなたは、天来の知恵、神の知恵が与えられるように願いなさいと言います。神はその願いを拒みません。自分は、頭の弱い人間だと思うことがあっても、疑わすに、信じて、神に助けを求めるのです。
また試練にあっては、正しい自己認識を持ちましょう。ヤコブは言います、貧しい者は、見下されても、自分を軽く見たりしないことだと言います。神の目には高価で尊いのです。あなたがたは誇りを持ちなさい、と彼は言います。他方、富んでいる人は、自惚れることのないようにと言います。それ等の富みは神に与えられているものであり、また取り去られるものです。むしろ、何も持たない者であるかのように、謙遜な心を大切にして歩みなさいと教えます。「タテ（縦）社会の構造」という本を書いた社会学者の中根千枝さんは、日本の教会は、横のものをタテにしている、と言いました。横のものをタテにしてはならないのです。
2．試練を生き抜く知恵（1:12-27）
12節、再び試練に話題を転じます。試練に耐える人は幸いです。耐え抜いた人は、主の祝福に与ると言います。耐えましょう。
また、神は人に試練を与えることはあっても、人を誘惑されることはありません。ですから試練にあって、堕ちることがあっても、神のせいにしてはなりません。悪者にすべきは、神ではなく、あなた自身です。私たちは自分の心の弱さのゆえに、試練に屈してしまうのです。むしろ、信仰を持っているのなら、試練に打ち勝つ力を与えてくれる神に信頼する習慣を養うべきです。試練の度に、神の力と助けを経験するのです。
また、信仰を持ったのなら、物事に対する新しい習慣を身につけましょう。よく聞き、よく考えて語り、忍耐強い心を持つ習慣を養うことです。20節、人の怒りは神の義を実現しないと言います。怒って当然だと思ったことが、後で、そうではないと気づくことは、よくあるものです。物事を聡明に、間違いなく判断していくためには、神のみことばにしっかり立つことです。神のみことばに従い心を成熟させることです。
問題は、私たちの忘れやすい、頭の弱さでしょう。こうして神のことばを耳にしても、数時間立てば、忘れているものでしょう。神の言葉に留まり続ける努力、つまり朝も昼も「自由をもたらす完全な律法を一身に見つめて、それから離れない」努力が必要です。
そのような意味では、私も、小さなみ言葉カードなるものを作って、それに絶えず目を注いで試練の時をしのいだ経験もあります。大切なのは、試練にあっても、心を腐らせないことでしょう。試練の渦中にあっても困っている人を気遣う心を持つ、そのような大きな人間性を養うことです。結局信仰を持つということは、よく聞き、よく考えて語り、忍耐強い心を養い育てていくことでもあるのです。
James 1 Doing the Word
1. seeking God’s wisdom (1:1-11)
Christianity arose out of Jerusalem, that is, from the Jewish community. Soon after, its belief in Jesus as the Messiah and Savior was persecuted by the Jewish community. This persecution extended to Jews living outside of Jerusalem.
The writer of this letter is thought to be James, the brother of Jesus, who wrote a letter of encouragement to the Jewish Christians who were being persecuted.
First of all, he tells them to exercise patience. He says that trials are something to rejoice in because they mature our faith. Then he teaches them to have wisdom in order to overcome trials. Wisdom does not cause people to be unnecessarily depressed or corrupt in the midst of trials, but enables them to look beyond the trials and live positively. Therefore, I say, you should ask that you be given the wisdom of heaven, the wisdom of God. God does not reject that wish. Even if you think you are a weak person, don’t doubt, believe, and ask God for help.
And in trials, have a proper sense of self. James says that the poor man should not take himself lightly, even if he is looked down upon. You are costly and precious in God’s eyes. Be ye proud, he says. On the other hand, the rich man is told not to be conceited. Such riches are given to God and can be taken away. Rather, he tells us to walk with a humble heart as if we had nothing. Sociologist Chie Nakane, who wrote a book titled “The Structure of Vertical Society,” said that the Japanese church has turned the horizontal into the vertical. We must not make the horizontal into the vertical.
2. wisdom to survive trials (1:12-27)
In verse 12, the topic turns again to trials. Blessed are those who endure trials. Those who endure will be blessed by the Lord. Let us endure.
God may give trials to people, but He does not tempt them. Therefore, if you fall in trials, do not blame God. It is you, not God, who should be the wrongdoer. We succumb to trials because of the weakness of our own hearts. Rather, if you have faith, you should cultivate the habit of trusting God to give you strength to overcome trials. In each trial, we experience God’s power and help.
Also, if you have faith, you should develop new habits about things. Cultivate the habit of listening well, thinking and speaking well, and having a patient heart. v. 20 says that man’s anger does not realize God’s righteousness. Often we think we have a right to be angry, only to find out later that we do not. In order to judge things wisely and without error, we must stand firmly on the Word of God. We must mature our minds according to God’s Word.
The problem is that our minds are too weak and easily forgetful. Even if we hear God’s Word in this way, after a few hours, we will have forgotten it. We need to make an effort to stay in the Word of God, to “look single-mindedly at the perfect law that brings freedom and never leave it,” morning and noon.
In this sense, I have also had the experience of making a small card of the Word of God, which I kept with me through times of trial. The important thing is not to let our hearts become corrupt in the midst of trials. It is to cultivate such a great humanity that we have the heart to care for those in need even in the midst of trials. In the end, having faith also means listening carefully, thinking and speaking thoughtfully, and cultivating and nurturing a patient heart.
