1．争い事の本当の理由（4:1-6）
争い事ほど、うんざりするものはありません。しかし、なぜか、それはなくなりません。何が問題か、それは、人の内側にある欲望なのだ、とヤコブは言います。欲深い相手の問題ではない、あなた自身の中にある譲らない欲望がそうだ、と言うのです。人間として、お互いに自己主張するのみで、譲らない、ただ、自分の欲望を押し通そうとしている。欲しいと思ったら、その所有者を抹殺してまでも手に入れようとする。その心が問題だ、と言います。やはり、信仰を持ったのなら、そのような愚かさから解放されましょう。
神を信じたのなら、人ではなく、神に求めることです。少ないパイを、奪い合うのではなく、大きなパイを、神様に与えていただくのです。いや、そんなことを言っても、神様は、そんなに都合よく与えてくださるわけがないだろう、と言う人もいるでしょう。確かにそうです。しかし、ヤコブは、言います。3節「求めても得られないのは、自分の快楽のために使おうと、悪い動機で求めるからだ」と言います。ヤコブさん、おっしゃるとおりだと言わざるを得ません。私たちは自分たちの愚かな欲を満たそうと神様にないものねだりをしているだけなのです。
私たちが欲しいと思っているものは、よくよく考えると、公共の利益、皆に益するものではなかったりします。皆のためなんだ、と口にしている時にも、実は、既に自分の利益が勘定されているものであったりします。そのようなあなたは、クリスチャンとは言うけれども、世を愛しているだけで、神を愛しているのではない。いや、ひょっとして神の敵になっているのではありませんか、とヤコブは言います。
確かに、自分の皮をめくって、その内実を見るなら、そこには、キリストではなく、自分を富ませる関心しかないとしたら、キリストに従う歩みをする者ではない、と言うべきでしょう。知らず知らず神の敵になっているようなものです。
６節「神はさらに豊かな恵みを与えてくださる」神は、人類にとって必要なモノは本当に豊かに与えてくださるものです。海の幸、山の幸、人は大地の恵みをただで与えられています。与えられたもので商売をしていながら、自分の物を売っているつもりになっているのです。そもそも私たちは裸でこの地上に生まれ出た者であることを覚えましょう。本当に何かが皆のために必要だとなれば、神は必ず、豊かに、与えてくださるはずです。
2．神に心を重ねる（4:7-17）
ですから信仰を持ったら、まず自分の我欲に満ちた心、地に堕ちた心に気づかされて、人類に必要なものはすべて満たしてくださったその神の聖い心に近づけられるように願いましょう。神を信じたというのに相変わらず、これまでの我欲を引きずって、神と世の間で彷徨い矛盾した心でいる人よ、心を聖別しなさい。そして、本当に、人類を愛し、人類のために良きことをしてくださる、その神の心と一つになりなさい。そうすればもうあなたの心に人と争う心もなくなるでしょう、というわけです。
9節「嘆きなさい。悲しみなさい。泣きなさい。笑いを悲しみに、喜びを憂いに」人は、楽しいこと、良いことを求めがちです。しかもそれは自己中心的な楽しみ、喜びであったりするものです。お茶の間のテレビでロシアとウクライナ、イスラエルとハマスの戦争を見ながら、ああ大変だ、何かしてあげられることはないのか、と思っても、ニュースが終わればスイッチを切って自分の世界に戻っていく。ただ、テレビが報道することを鵜呑みにし、実際に現地でどんな悲劇が起こっているかなど想像もしない、これが人間の現実でしょう。つまり他人のことなどあまり関心はない。自分のことしか関心がないという人間の現実があるのです。そのような自分の現実に気づき、嘆き、悲しむことが必要なのです。結局、その心の現実が、私たちの争い事の根になっているからです。
他方自らが不遇の状況にある時、嘆き、悲しみ、涙の現実にある時は、主の権威のもとに遜っていれば、ちょうどよい時に、神がこれを引き上げてくださいます、とヤコブは言います（10節）。だから毒づいたり、悪態をついたりするのも止めること。さばきは神に委ねることだ、となります。
また、逆に、商売がうまくいって、儲けに儲けている人たちには、注意しなさいとヤコブは言います。明日のことはわからない。明日を保証するのは神です。神を勘定に入れない人生など危ういもので、いつ足がすくわれるかわからないですよ、と。神を覚えて、神の御前にあって、為すべきことを知る、そして為すべき正しいことをする、それが私たちに求められていることではないでしょうか。

James 4: Taking God into Account
1. the real reason for strife (4:1-6)
There is nothing more tedious than strife. But for some reason, it never goes away. What is the problem, James says, is the inner desire of man. It’s not the other person’s greed, but your own inner, non-negotiable desires, he says. As human beings, we are only asserting ourselves to each other, not giving in, just trying to push our own desires. If we want something, we will try to get it, even to the point of obliterating its owner. That mind is the problem, he says. After all, if you have faith, free yourself from such foolishness.
If you have faith in God, you should seek Him, not others. Ask God to give you a big piece of the pie, not a small piece of the pie and fight over it. Some people may say, “No, God will not give us such a big pie so conveniently. That is true. But James says, verse 3, “You ask and do not get, because you seek with evil motives, to use it for your own pleasure. I must say, Jacob, you are right. We are only begging God to satisfy our own foolish desires.
When we think about it, what we want is not for the public good, not for the benefit of everyone. Even when we say that it is for the good of all, in fact, our own interests are already taken into account. You may say that you are a Christian, but you only love the world, not God. No, perhaps you have become an enemy of God, says James.
Indeed, if you turn over your own skin and look at your inward reality, you should say that if there is only an interest there that enriches you, and not Christ, then you are not a person who walks in the way of Christ. It is like being an enemy of God without knowing it.
Verse 6: “God will give us more abundantly” God is truly abundant in the things that are necessary for mankind. The bounty of the sea, the bounty of the mountains, and the bounty of the earth are given to mankind for free. We are doing business with what we are given, but we think we are selling our own things. Let us remember that we are those who were born naked on this earth in the first place. If something is truly needed for everyone, God will surely provide, abundantly.
2. lay your heart on God (4:7-17)
Therefore, when you have faith, first be aware of your own selfish and earthly heart, and ask God to bring you closer to His holy heart that has fulfilled all the needs of humankind. Those who have believed in God, but are still wandering between God and the world with contradictory minds, dragging their old selfish desires with them, sanctify your minds. And truly become one with the heart of God, who loves humankind and does good things for them. Then you will no longer have a heart that is at war with others.
Verse 9: “Mourn. Sorrow. Weep. Laugh and be sorrowful, and let your joys be sorrowful. People tend to seek for good things, even if they are self-centered pleasures and joys. As we watch the war between Russia and Ukraine or Israel and Hamas on TV in our living rooms, we may think, “Oh my God, what can I do to help? We simply believe what the TV reports and never imagine what kind of tragedies are actually happening there. In other words, we do not care much about others. The reality of human beings is that they only care about themselves. We need to be aware of this reality, grieve, and be saddened by it. After all, that reality of the heart is the root of our disputes.
On the other hand, when we ourselves are in a situation of discontentment, when we are in the reality of lamentation, sorrow, and tears, James says that God will raise it up at just the right time, if we are in submission to the Lord’s authority (v. 10). So stop being venomous and swearing. Judgment is to be left to God.
And conversely, James says, beware of those who are doing well in business and making a fortune. You never know what tomorrow will bring. It is God who guarantees tomorrow. A life that does not count on God is a dangerous thing, and you never know when your feet will be swept off the ground. Remembering God, knowing what we should do in His presence, and doing what is right is what is required of us.
