©Dr. Makoto

[Season 6] Ecclesiastes 10 Explained Simply: Why Do Small Mistakes Cost Us So Much?

1. Why Don’t Things Go More Sensibly?

Trust that we have built up over many years can be hurt by one careless word. On the other hand, someone we think of as “Why this person?” may rise to a high position. “If wisdom is so important, why don’t things go more sensibly?” Ecclesiastes 10 looks at this reality.

2. Before We Read This Chapter

At the end of chapter 9, we heard that wisdom is better than weapons, yet one sinner can destroy much that is good (9:18).

Chapter 10 digs deeper into both sides of this. Wisdom truly brings benefit. But because its value is so great, the loss caused by even a little foolishness is not small.

3. The Flow of This Chapter

Let us look at how this chapter unfolds.

Verses 1–4: A Little Foolishness Can Damage Something Great

The first thing that appears is a dead fly. Even a few flies can make a perfumer’s oil stink (10:1). In the same way, a little foolishness can ruin wisdom and honor. It takes time to build something up, but it does not take much to spoil it.

Also, foolishness does not stay hidden. The direction of a person’s heart shows even in the way he walks along the road (10:2–3). A concrete example is when a ruler’s anger is directed at you. If you do not leave and you stay calm, great offenses are settled (10:4). Wisdom makes a difference in moments when emotions are stirred.

Verses 5–7: A Ruler’s Mistake Can Disturb the Order of Society

But the problem is not only our own behavior. The speaker sees “an error that comes from a ruler” (10:5). If those in authority misjudge people, unfit people may rise to high positions, and capable people may be treated as low. The scenes in verses 6–7, “fools are set in high places” and “slaves ride on horses while princes walk on the ground,” describe such a reversal of order. Even one mistake in judgment, when it is made by someone with power, can spread through the whole of society.

Verses 8–11: Wisdom Changes How We Use Our Strength

Then, in a world with danger, what use is wisdom? Anyone who digs a pit may fall into it, and anyone who works with stones or wood may be hurt (10:8–9). We cannot remove danger from work itself. If someone uses a dull axe without sharpening it, more strength is needed (10:10). With wisdom, we do not keep forcing our way through; we can adjust how we do things.

But knowing the right way is not enough. If a snake bites before the charmer uses his skill, he gets no benefit from that skill (10:11). What to do and how to do it matter, but so does when to do it. Wisdom shows itself in doing what is needed at the time it is needed.

Verses 12–15: Foolishness Shows in Words and in Hard Work

Foolishness shows not only in ability but also in words. Unlike the words of a wise person, a fool’s words finally bring harm to himself (10:12–13). A fool keeps talking as if he knows even what he does not know. Wisdom does not show itself only in skillful speech. It also shows in knowing what we do not know and not talking too much (10:14).

Verse 15 overlaps with verse 10. The same foolishness also shows in hard work. If someone keeps working without knowing the way, he only wears himself out. Working hard and working wisely are not the same thing.

Verses 16–20: Even Government Needs the Right Time and Self-Control

The same difference appears among those who rule a country. In a land whose officials feast in the morning, things are bad. In a blessed land, the officials eat at the proper time, not to get drunk but to gain strength (10:16–17). The problem is not eating. What differs is when and for what purpose it is done.

If someone is lazy and leaves a building neglected, it will eventually leak (10:18). In reality, people’s pleasures and needs are moved by money (10:19). Within this reality, the speaker finally returns to the matter of words. We may want to criticize such a king. But when we see problems in government, we do not know where our criticism will be carried. That is why we must not become foolish ourselves (10:20).

4. A Message for Us

The speaker says that there are situations in which even wisdom cannot fix things. Yet he still taught that living wisely is not in vain.

Wisdom is not only a method for getting good results. Rather, it is for not treating today’s tasks carelessly in a world where we cannot see ahead. Even if we cannot decide the results, today’s decisions and words do not become meaningless or worthless. Let us read the Bible together again tomorrow. ©Dr. Makoto
