[Season 6] Ecclesiastes 9 Explained Simply: If We Cannot Decide the Results, What Are We Working For?

You prepared carefully for an important task. But because of circumstances beyond your control, the results were not what you expected. Or you did good work, yet it was not remembered for long. At times like that, we wonder, “What is the point of working hard?”

Before We Read This Chapter

At the end of chapter 8, the speaker said that even if people use all their wisdom, they cannot understand everything God does.

In chapter 9, that limit comes even closer to our daily lives. Death cannot be avoided, and we cannot see what lies ahead. Hard work does not always lead to success. Then what meaning is there in living today?

The Flow of This Chapter

First, let us look at what this chapter says.

1. No One Can Avoid Death — 9:1–6

The speaker says that the righteous and the wise, and all that they do, are “in God’s hand” (9:1). But people cannot understand everything. And the same death comes to both the righteous and the wicked (9:2–3).

Even if we live rightly and wisely, we cannot avoid death. The speaker looks straight at this harsh reality.

But in verse 4, the view changes. “A living dog is better than a dead lion.” A lion may look more impressive. Even so, a living dog is better than a dead lion. In other words, what matters is not how impressive someone is, but that a living person can still do something. When we die, our life “under the sun” comes to an end (9:5–6). That is why the speaker turns his eyes to our life now.

2. Because Life Has Limits, We Live What We Have Now — 9:7–10

So verse 7 begins with the word “Come.” “Come, eat your bread with enjoyment, and drink your wine with a glad heart. God has already approved what you do. Let your clothes always be white, and never let oil be lacking on your head. Enjoy life with the wife you love, all the days of your vain life” (9:7–9). What is said here is not a way to solve the big problems of life. It describes ordinary daily living.

The important word is “portion” in verse 9 (9:9). Even if we cannot decide everything in our lives, we still have the meals, the relationships, and the daily life we have been given now. That is the “portion” we are to live. So verse 10 goes on to say that we should do with all our strength whatever our hands find to do.

This does not mean, “If you work hard, you will succeed.” It means that there is meaning in doing what is in our hands while we are alive. But even when we make an effort, we cannot decide the results.

3. Working Hard and Deciding the Results Are Different — 9:11–12

A fast runner does not always win the race. A strong person does not always win the battle. Wisdom and knowledge alone do not always bring wealth or the favor of others (9:11). This is because “time and chance” are involved.

In other words, there are things in life that are not decided by ability alone. Also, people do not know “their time” (9:12). Something we never expected may suddenly happen. Even so, we can still live with all our strength. Working hard and deciding the results are different things.

4. Even Someone Who Helped Can Be Forgotten — 9:13–18

Then what value does wisdom have if it does not bring the result we hoped for? The speaker tells a story about a poor wise man who saved a small city. His wisdom was so useful that it stood against the military power of a great king (9:13–15). Yet that man was forgotten.

But being forgotten does not mean his wisdom had no value. The value of saving the city remains. That is why the speaker says, “Wisdom is better than strength” (9:16). The quiet words of a wise person are worth more than the shouting of a ruler (9:17).

Having value and being recognized are different things. On the other hand, one person’s wrong action can destroy much that is good (9:18). Wisdom is important, but we cannot say that “doing what is right always brings good results.”

A Message for Us

Even when we prepare well, the results may not turn out as we hoped. Even when we do good work, we may be forgotten in time. It is a painful reality. The speaker does not say, “In the end, everything will be rewarded.” Instead, he separates two things: producing results and living with all our strength, and also having value and being recognized.

Even when we cannot control everything, we can still eat our meals, spend time with the people we love, and live the “portion” we have been given today. Ecclesiastes 9 shows us a way of living that does not measure the value of today by results alone.
