Dr. Makoto

[Season 6] Ecclesiastes 11 Explained Simply: Should We Wait Until We Are Sure?

    1. Should We Wait Until We Feel Sure?

You want to decide on a path, but every road has some chance of failure. The more information you gather, the more new worries you see. “Is it better not to move until I know I will not fail?”

But even while we put off a decision, time keeps passing. Ecclesiastes 11 speaks about how to walk through a life when we cannot see what lies ahead.

    1. Before We Read This Chapter

Up to chapter 10, the Teacher has spoken about wisdom for living in an uncertain world. In 11:1–6, the words “do not know” are repeated. In verses 7–10 that follow, the view widens from success or failure in work to life as a whole. Here, rejoicing in life, remembering the end, and living before God are joined together. Then the chapter leads into the encouragement in chapter 12 to look ahead to old age and death.

    1. The Flow of This Chapter

Let us look at what this chapter says.

Verses 1–6: Keep Working Even When We Do Not Know

There are several views about what “Cast your bread on the waters” in verse 1 specifically refers to. But the point here is to take action first, even if results do not always come back quickly.

Verse 2 continues, “Divide it among seven, or even eight.” We do not know what kind of disaster may come. So the meaning is that we should not depend on only one thing, but should divide what we have among several.

On the other hand, about being too careful, the picture of a farmer is given. If he does not sow seed because he is watching the wind, and does not reap because he is looking at the clouds, he will miss his chance to begin. People do not only fail to know the future. They also “do not know the work of God” (verse 5). Even if we gather more information, we cannot see everything about the movements of the hand of God, who rules the world.

So verse 6 urges us to sow seed in the morning and not to rest our hands in the evening. We do not know which will succeed. Even so, without knowing, we keep going with what we should do.

Verses 7–8: Enjoy the Light and Remember the Days of Darkness

Up to this point, the Teacher spoke about how to work when we cannot predict the results. From verse 7, attention turns to the life of the person who does that work.

As the words “Light is pleasant” say, there is joy in being alive itself. But verse 8 continues, “the days of darkness will be many.” These bright days will not last forever. It also speaks of the reality that we cannot keep the present forever: “Everything that comes is vanity.” Even so, enjoying the present is not denied. We walk on while rejoicing, and also remembering that those days are limited.

Verses 9–10: Walk Before God While Rejoicing

Next, it speaks about how to live a life that has limits. Verse 9 urges young people, “Enjoy yourself” and “let your heart be glad.” This is because youth has joys that belong to youth. But the verse continues with the word “but.” This way of living is before God and is not separated from responsibility. What is shown here is joy and freedom that come with responsibility.

Verse 10 urges us to remove irritation from the heart and to take pain away from the body. This is because youth and the prime of life pass away. That is why it says not to fill our limited present with distress alone.

    1. A Message for Us

Are you stopping even what you can do today because things are not certain? When we are not sure how to proceed, waiting until we feel it will be all right can keep us from moving anything forward.

What the speaker urges is not waiting until success is certain. It is to admit that we do not know what lies ahead, to avoid narrowing our possibilities down to just one, and to start with what we can do today.

And life is not only about producing results. There is joy in being alive now. But that time also has limits. So while rejoicing in the present, we walk on without forgetting that our choices are before God. That is the way of life this chapter shows. ©Dr. Makoto
