【シーズン６】箴言1章　情報は増えたのに、なぜ判断を誤るのか

1．答えはあるのに迷う時代

分からないことを、すぐに検索できる時代になりました。しかし、何が正しいかは、実はそれほど分かりにくいものではないのかもしれません。むしろ問われているのは、分かっていることに、私たちがどう応えるかということです。

私たちは、知らないから失敗するのではなく、分かっていながら、その声に耳を傾けないことで道を誤ることがあります。箴言1章は、利益や仲間意識で誘う声と、公然と呼びかける知恵の声のどちらを選ぶのか、私たちに問いかけています。

2．本章の歴史的・文学的文脈

箴言1章は、箴言全体の序文にあたり、この書物の目的を示しています。単なる知識ではなく、正しく生きるための知恵を学ぶことが主題です。

また本章では、父から子への教えと、「知恵」が人格を持つ存在として呼びかける語り、という、2つの方法が用いられています。これによって、知恵が家庭でも社会でも必要であることが強調されています。

さらに、「主を恐れることは知識の初め」という言葉は、箴言全体を読む鍵となる中心的な主題です。

3．本章の流れ

では、本章の内容を見てまいりましょう。

1～7節「箴言の目的」

箴言は、知恵と訓戒を学び、正しい判断力を身につけるために与えられています。そして、「主を恐れることは知識の初め」と語られます。

8～19節「罪人の誘惑への警告」

父は息子に対し、「罪人たちがあなたを惑わしても、それに応じてはならない」と勧めます。利益や仲間意識を利用した誘いの先にある危険が示されます。

20～33節「知恵の呼びかけ」

知恵は広場や街角で、公然と呼びかけます。しかし、人々はその声を退けます。その結果、自ら選んだ道の実を刈り取ることになると警告されます。

4．本章の読み方

箴言1章の重心は、「知識を持つこと」ではなく、「何を基準に生きるか」にあります。

本章を、成功するための実用書のように読むと、中心を見失います。問題とされているのは能力不足ではなく、知恵への応答です。知恵はすでに語りかけています。問われているのは、その声に耳を傾けるかどうかです。

また、誘惑は露骨な悪として現れるのではなく、利益への期待や、仲間から外れたくないという思いにつけ込む形で近づいてくることも忘れてはなりません。

5．私たちへのメッセージ

私たちは日々、多くの情報に触れています。しかし箴言1章は、「どれだけ知っているか」よりも、「誰の声を基準にしているか」を問いかけます。

江戸時代の儒学者・佐藤一斎は、『言志四録』の中で、学問は実践につながらなければならないと繰り返し語りました。知識そのものよりも、生き方に結びつく知恵を重んじたのです。

箴言も同じ方向を示します。知識の量ではなく、主を恐れ、与えられる知恵に耳を傾けること。それが人生の土台になります。

[Season 6] Proverbs 1: Why Do We Make Wrong Decisions When We Have More Information?

1. An Age When We Have Answers but Still Feel Lost

We now live in an age when we can quickly search for what we do not know. Yet what is right may not actually be so hard to see. The real question may be how we respond to what we already know.

We do not always fail because we lack knowledge. Sometimes we go astray because we do not listen to what we already know. Proverbs 1 asks us to choose: will we follow the voice that lures us with profit and belonging, or the voice of wisdom that calls out openly?

2. The Historical and Literary Context of This Chapter

Proverbs 1 is the introduction to the whole book of Proverbs. It explains the purpose of the book. Its main theme is not simply gaining knowledge, but learning wisdom so that we can live rightly.

This chapter also uses two ways of speaking. First, a father teaches his son. Second, Wisdom speaks as if she were a person and calls out to people. These two forms show that wisdom is needed both in the home and in society.

The words “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” are also a central theme. They are a key to reading the whole book of Proverbs.

3. The Flow of This Chapter

Now, let us look at the content of this chapter.

Verses 1–7: “The Purpose of Proverbs”

Proverbs was given so that people may learn wisdom and instruction and gain sound judgment. It also says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”

Verses 8–19: “A Warning Against the Temptation of Sinners”

A father tells his son, “If sinners try to lead you away, do not follow them.” He shows the danger behind an invitation that uses the hope of profit and the desire to belong.

Verses 20–33: “Wisdom Calls Out”

Wisdom calls out openly in public squares and on street corners. But people reject her voice. They are warned that they will harvest the results of the path they chose for themselves.

4. How to Read This Chapter

The main focus of Proverbs 1 is not “having knowledge,” but “choosing the standard by which we live.”

If we read this chapter only as a practical guide to success, we will miss its center. The problem is not a lack of ability. The problem is how we respond to wisdom. Wisdom is already speaking. The question is whether we will listen to her voice.

We must also remember that temptation does not always appear as clear evil. It may come by using our hope for profit or our fear of being left out of a group.

5. A Message for Us

Every day, we receive a great amount of information. However, Proverbs 1 asks us not only, “How much do you know?” but also, “Whose voice guides your decisions?”

Issai Sato, a Confucian scholar from the Edo period, often wrote in Genshi Shiroku that learning must lead to action. He valued wisdom connected to the way we live more than knowledge itself.

Proverbs points in the same direction. The foundation of life is not the amount of knowledge we have. It is fearing the Lord and listening to the wisdom he gives.
