1列王記18章　バアルとエリヤの対決

1．イスラエルの飢饉、神の言葉の実現

イスラエルの王も民も、雨を降らせる力があるという偶像の神バアルを拝んでいました。実際、そうすることで雨が降り、作物が豊作になったと思われる時が続いていたのでしょう。しかし、雨を降らせるのはバアルではない、天地をお造りになり、これを支配しておられるまことの神です。ですから神が雨を降らせない、と言うのなら、そのとおりのことが起こるのです。こうして二年、三年と雨が降らない事態が生じました。大地は干からびて、人々の生活に支障が出始めました。生活だけではありません。当時は、馬やロバが軍事力の中心でしたから、そのような馬やロバのための食糧や水が失われる、つまり軍事力が維持できない国家存亡の危機が生じていたのです。実際、この時、北ではアッシリアのシャルマネセル三世が、シリア地方に侵略を繰り返しており、イスラエルは、ダマスコやハマテ、他12か国との同盟軍に参加するため、2000輌の戦車を準備する必要がありました。しかしそれが難しい事態が生じていたのです。こうして王は、自ら危機感を感じ、牧草地を見つけるために出かけていくのです。

しかしこれほど深刻な事態に直面していながら、アハブは神のことばを受け入れられずにいるのです。他方アハブの家臣にオバデヤという人がいました。オバデヤは主を恐れ、主の預言者たちを残虐なイゼベルの手から救いだし、匿った人です。エリヤは、このオバデヤを通じて、アハブとの会見を申し出ます。アハブはエリヤと対面するや否や、激しい怒りをあらわにします。雨をとどめたのはエリヤではなく神であるのに、神を認められないアハブは、エリヤにその怒りをぶつけるのです。

2．カルメル山の対決

そこで、エリヤはアハブの目を覚まさせるため大がかりなイベントを提案するのです。カルメル山頂でバアルの預言者と対決することでした。またエリヤは、同じように神の存在を認められないでいる民にも、そのパフォーマンスから悟るように警告しました（21節）。

この対決で、エリヤはことごとく自分の側が不利となるような状況を設定しました。まずエリヤは、カルメル山、つまり、イスラエルの神ではなく、カナンの異教の神々の聖地を対決の場とするのです。また850人の相手にたった一人で立ち向かいました。さらに先取権を譲っています。最後にエリヤは祭壇に水をかけました。簡単には火がつきようもない状況を設定したのです。それらは、生ける全能の神の存在を見間違うことなく明らかに示すための方法で、彼は自ら全く勝ち目のない勝負を設定したのです。そしてエリヤは勝利しました。

今日カルメル山頂には、剣を振りかざしたエリヤの像が設置されています。今や観光の名所となり、全世界からキリスト教徒のみならずユダヤ教徒も訪れ、一種出会いの場となっているところもあります。いつでしたか、米国からの牧師に声をかけられ、名刺を交換したこともあります。しかし、アハブにとって、そこは天地創造のまことの神の存在を明らかに示された場でした。ただそれでもアハブは神を認められずにいたのです。先の未亡人は神のことばの成就に、神が生きておられることを認めましたが（24節）、アハブはそうではありません。未亡人とアハブの違いはどこにあるのか、持たぬ者の幸いというものがあるのかもしれません。人には、何もない、頼れるものがない、もはや立つ瀬がないというような現実に打ちのめされる時があるものでしょう。しかし、人には諦めでも死でもなく、迷わず神の可能性を選ぶことができるのです。では、今日もよき一日であるように祈ります。

1 Kings Chapter 18 Confrontation between Baal and Elijah

1. Israeli famine, realization of the word of God

Both the king and the people of Israel worshiped Baal, the idol god, who had the power to rain. In fact, it would have been raining and the crops seemed to be a good harvest for a long time. However, it is not Baal who makes it rain, but the true God who created and ruled the heavens and the earth. So if God says he won’t let it rain, that’s what happens. In this way, it did not rain for two or three years. The earth has dried up and people’s lives have begun to be hindered. It’s not just about life. At that time, horses and donkeys were the center of military power, so food and water for such horses and donkeys were lost, that is, there was a crisis of national survival where military power could not be maintained. In fact, at this time, Assyrian Charmanesel III was repeatedly invading the Syrian region in the north, and Israel needed to prepare 2000 chariots to join the alliance with Damascus, Hamate, and 12 other countries.  But that was a difficult situation. In this way, the king feels a sense of crisis and goes out to find the meadow.

However, despite facing such a serious situation, Ahab is unable to accept the word of God. On the other hand, one of Ahab’s vassals was Obadiah. Obadiah is a man who fears the Lord and has rescued and concealed his prophets from the cruel hands of Jezebel. Elijah offers a meeting with Ahab through this Obadiah. As soon as Ahab meets Elijah, he reveals his fierce anger. It was God, not Elijah, who stopped the rain, but Ahab, who could not recognize God, throws his anger at Elijah.

2. Mount Carmel Showdown

Therefore, Elijah proposes a large-scale event to awaken Ahab. It was to confront the Prophet of Baal at the summit of Carmel. Elijah also warned those who were similarly unrecognized of God to realize from their performance (verse 21).

In this confrontation, Elijah set up a situation in which he was at a disadvantage. First, Elijah confronts Mount Carmel, the sanctuary of the pagan gods of Canaan, not the gods of Israel. He also confronted 850 opponents alone. In addition, he has given up the lien. Finally, Elijah watered the altar. He set up a situation that couldn’t easily catch fire. They are a way to clearly show the existence of the living Almighty God without mistake, and he himself set up a completely unbeatable game. And Elijah won.

Today, a statue of Elijah wielding a sword is installed on the summit of Carmel. It is now a tourist attraction, and not only Christians but also Jews from all over the world visit it, and it is also a kind of meeting place. At some point, I was approached by a pastor from the United States and exchanged business cards. However, for Ahab, it was a place that clearly showed the existence of the true God of Creation. However, Ahab was still unable to recognize God. The former widow admitted that God was alive in the fulfillment of God’s Word (ver. 24), but Ahab did not. What is the difference between a widow and Ahab, and maybe the happiness of those who do not have it. There will be times when a person is overwhelmed by the reality of nothing, nothing to rely on, and no more standing. However, one can choose God’s potential without hesitation, without giving up or dying. I pray that today will be a good day.
